I often call my girlfriend during lunch, cellphone to cellphone. We both work in midtown Manhattan - a place where ATT says it has great service. The relationship began before the iPhone when I had Verizon. My Verizon phone was clear as can be and sounded like a landline. Yesterday's call (on a clear cloudless day) had drop outs and a high pitched tone no matter where I stood. Finally after ten minutes of this, my girlfriend said 'Honey, I know you love your iPhone but for the past two years I can barely hear you when you call. When your contract runs out (the end of next month) can't you go back to Verizon? I know your phone is cool but I haven't really heard you in two years! Please??" What do you all think?

How hot is she?

I also meant to add...just text. It doesn't matter how hot she is if you adopt that methedology. I mean, seriously, what do you have to talk about? You obviously see her at home, in the evening, in bed. That's when you should talk. Save the daytime conversations to...I'll see ya in a few. Love you. Take care combe your hair, keep it real....

:)

Just busting your chops. My wife just got an iPhone and she is a crack addict, like I was. So, all happy in iphoneville...

ATT is good in Phoenix. I have never had a drop. But this slingplayer thing has me aggravated.

Am I really the only one who sees something wrong with 99% of these posts:

OP: Hey guys, my iPhone is not so good in the actual calls department. I have a hard time making calls.
Everyone: Get a second phone specifically to use for calling!

Wait, what? He bought an iPhone and now has to buy a different phone to actually use as a phone? That's ridiculous.

EDIT:
I own both the first iPhone and the iPhone 3G and both have terrible calling issues (dropped calls ALL the time and it's not the network). I luckily don't make a million calls a day so it's not a huge issue but if I had to use the phone portion constantly I'd be pretty upset. The first generation iPhone has unbelievably bad speakers. So bad that after using any other phone for more then a day I can't hear anything out of the first generation iPhone and can't use it for calls.
at&t doesn't have crappy service all over. I said this many times, there is no such thing as a cell phone company that works 100% of the time 100% everywhere. No matter what cell phone carrier had the iPhone, people will complain.
I'm having no issues with at&t's service and I am very happy with them so far.

I'm from Canada so I'm on Rogers. I've always been on them so I've had a variety of phones and don't really have any problems with actual reception. The iPhone just has a tendency to drop calls for no reason for me. Both the first generation and the 3G.

I am proud to say after 7 years of being with my wife we still call each other at lunch and still have a lot to say after work when we get home. Communication in a relationship is very important.

Just to supply some more information: my lunch break tends to be on the later side 1:45 or 2, so these conversations would be slightly after a "lunch rush hour" if the cells are full. We talk because we like to talk with each other and no my girlfriend isn't demanding in our relationship. This thread is simply a reflection on how bad service from a provider, in this case ATT, can effect people's lives.
The cell phone provider isn't effecting it. She is. Just wait until you get home to talk.

A prepaid Verizon is probably what you need. This would probably be the best route. In Phoenix, I have noticed that T-Mobile has better service than AT&T, but in most other places, AT&T beats T-Mobile hands down. If you live in an area where T-Mobile is better, unlock and use that, if not, then a prepaid verizon is probably the best route.

It's allegedly common for someone with a hot mistress to have a second cell phone. A small one that can be hidden from the wife.

So just get yourself a another line on whatever service your girlfriend prefers.

Save the iPhone in case you meet someone even hotter... and with a better taste in cell phones.

don't dump the girl - get her to move to a place where there is good reception...

man what are you thinking of dumping the iphone! that's so impractical!

:D

The above is a device that is unfamiliar to the playing fields of Manhattan.

Wow that was uncalled for.

Agreed. Almost 7 years here too. Yesterday I had lunch without her for the first time in ages and texted her the whole time. Ahhh amore...

I came in to say, "send her on her merry way." Sounds like her request is reasonable. Personally I couldn't switch to anything but the Pre or Instinct 2. Also consider you'll have to buy an iPod Touch when you go to Verizon.

Does the phrase, "Ripped off by ATT each month - with high bills and low quality service" mean anything to you?

Amen, agreed 100%. iPhone is a cool gadget but on the worst network. What the hell was Apple thinking when choosing At&t (network with the most dropped calls). Paying over 100 bucks for daily dropped calls is not worth it. I'm waiting for the Palm Pre and see if it live up to the hype. Switching to Sprint will save me some money and get better call quality.

Has anyone ever consider that it may be the phone itself? I don't recall having so many dropped calls before the iPhone. Maybe one day I'll try another phone to test.

To the OP, I'm sure most of the people here are kidding with their replies. I feel your pain though. The other day I was talking on the iPhone inside my home where I get full signal and it literally dropped the call three times within ten minutes.

You don't have any choice here but to get another phone or put up with the dropped / low quality calls. Hopefully, the next generation iPhone will be better.

I have the iPhone since August and only had 3 dropped calls, two of them were to my sister who has crappy reception at her house. So I don't think it's the iPhone, i think it's the network. The network here is great.

AT&T, on the other hand, seems to be pretty crappy in some areas.

It's not the iPhone, it's crappy ATT service in Manhattan. I travel a lot -- both around the US and internationally. I have had excellent coverage in other parts of the country as well as mediocre service at times. In Manhattan, one can get high pitched hums and dropped calls just standing on the street. Also the weak ATT signal doesn't penetrate the old New York buildings. In my apartment I get reception in the two rooms that directly face the street, in the two rooms in the back of the apartment it is impossible to have a conversation. I had Verizon right before I bought the iPhone in June of 07 and never had these problems.

Easy sell the iPhone and get an iPod Touch + either a Verizon BlackBerry or Sprint Pre

Bingo!

I and many other friends have similar reception horror stories all over Manhattan.

Port your number over to Verizon and enjoy consistent reception and clear calls. AT&T coverage in NYC and many other northeast regions is atrocious at best.

I also know that many people have great ATT reception outside of the NY area.

I go to college in NYC, but I live and grew up in Miami, so I'm in both places all the time. Coverage in Miami is absolutely FANTASTIC. Blazing fast 3G speeds, 5 bars everywhere I go, inside or out. Coverage in NYC is the complete opposite. I'm lucky if I can get data to work at all, even if I have 5 bars. Dropped calls left and right, even if I'm not moving and have 5 bars.

It's amazing that I can take the same phone to two different, highly populated areas in the United States and see such drastic differences in service.

i'm sorry, but do you two never meet up with each other?

Responses like these are plain asinine. Why would anyone want to keep a phone that can't be used as a phone?

I vote switch to verizon, maybe get a cheap blackberry and pick up an iPod touch.

EDIT: I take it back! Get the Pre! *drools*
