You have had more problems than I have had in almost 2 years.
Sorry this happened to you, I am quite sure your replacement will be what you were expecting.

you must be joking. why should they? if you have projects to do, borrow someone elses computer, or go use a shared one in a computer lab or library.

if you bought a pack of underwear, and later found that the underwear was defective and you couldn't wear it, should the underwear marker "compensate" you, because you had no underwear and therefore couldn't go to class? lol it's the same thing. incidental and consequential damages are your problem. the product vendor is liable only for their product, nothing more.

on that same subject, the product vendor is NOT liable for your data. So lets say you get this new replacement computer, then spend 9 weeks writing a huge term paper- and then the hard drive dies and you lose everything. that is YOUR problem, no one elses. What I'm trying to say, is back up your data regularly! get an external hard drive, preferably firewire, and back up your stuff to it often!!

That's the worst analogy I've ever heard! LOL

And he does have a fair point - while I don't expect Apple to compensate, it's still unfortunate. He could be in a situation where he doesn't know anyone that can lend him a computer, or maybe the computers at the library don't have the software he needs...

It's not really fair to rip him up like that.

Sorry to hear your Mac experience has been less than brilliant so far.
The vast majority have few or no problems whatsoever.
I have set up 4 Mac systems for various family members in the last 4 months (all new users, all after seeing my experience) and none ,including me, have had a single hardware issue at all.

Apple sold a record 4 million or so Macs this last quarter (their best ever) so it`s inevitable that someof these will be duff.
I`m quite sure Apple will take care of it, it sucks but ,hey, worse things happen ;)

Welcome aboard anyway :)

A couple of years ago my mom wanted a Mac. I kept telling her how easy they were to use and they "just worked". We picked her up a black MacBook and out of the box it had 15 Gigabytes of HDD space left on it. Took it back that day and replaced it and the next one was fine... Sometimes those things happen.

But boy did I look like an arse.

I get a ton of Kernel Panics with uTorrent.

I abuse the MBP normally with at least 9 programs open for days on end (MS Word, MS PowerPoint, MS Excel, EndNote X something, Firefox, iTunes and several graphic editing programs and data collection software from lab equipment and I never have any problems.

As soon as I start using uTorrent (latest OSX version), I get Kernel Panics. It usually happens when the machine is processing a lot of pieces (1MB/s+).

And, it only happens with the newest version.

:(

That alone may have started it for you.

Good luck.

To the thread starter: does the Apple Hardware Test (which you can run when booting from the OS DVD while holding the D key) indicate any hardware problems? Your kernel panics could be related to a faulty RAM chip.

There is a big difference in paying €1,149 for a laptop & paying €2 for a pair of underwear. (of which one would normally have more of anyway)

Anyway, regarding that, my uncle (apple employee) is providing me with €240 worth of software (on top of the €200 employee discount), so it's all good.

whaaa you have an uncle working at apple and you're worried? chill out, you're fine! ^^

i disagree, the price is irrelevant. both are disposable commodity consumer products.

but in any event, i'm glad you got it resolved to your satisfaction.

I`m currently running utorrent (as we speak), latest version,no probs.

I only noticed problems under heavy usage ... 20+ torrents and 1MB/s+ download, 500KB/s+ upload. I think it has something to do with piecing together so many files in parallel.

This is with a unibody MB from 2008.

I can't do anything with the machine.

The error message of "restart your computer" appears within 10 seconds of pressing the power button.

Sometimes it doesn't even turn on, just beeps for a while & dies.

Yeah we get it. Did you turn it in for service yet or has your uncle, the Apple employee" done anything yet? You seem to want this fixed but the amount of time you spend moaning about it is wasted. Get it done if it is that important to you. Use a computer on campus to get your work done. Oddly, not all college kids have a computer so colleges prepare themselves for those who need to use one.

I know YOU know it, I was responding to the previous poster.

My uncle who works in Apple has nothing to do with it. The one I have now is being taken back by Apple and my new replacement is due tomorrow.

I don't expect it to be fixed, because I am happy that I am getting a brand new one instead.

I don't understand your attitude towards me, then again, what do women know. *safety wink*

If its all good then stop moaning about it.

"Should Apple compensate me in any way for the inconvenience of this? (I am in college now for the week with no PC & I have projects to do etc.)"

Dry your eyes and stop playing the victim. You've got a rogue Mac, but Apple are replacing it without delay or quibble. Move on.

The problem must be the helpful "similar threads" at the bottom of each page... You see a lot of these zombie resurrections since the forum redesign.

There should be a pop-up when you hit reply - "this last response to this thread is more than X days old... Are you sure you want to post?"

That might help a bit, but the column on the right shows the last person to post, with the date and year of the post clearly displayed. I would be surprised if even a pop-up slowed this down.
