Oh for goodness sakes ;) Of course I know they don't have flashes - I've used them for ages. You just didn't get it - and didn't even notice the big bold hint at the sarcasm I put in brackets. ;) Or the tongue emoticon.

Anyhow, this is just getting silly. I've used those cameras for ages and apparently according to Sapporobaby here I don't know they lack a built in flash... Yeah, that makes a whole lot of sense doesn't it...

I get what you are saying, but in a restaurant or bar... put a D4 with a f1.4 prime in the hands of an amateur vs. a D3000 with an 18-55 kit lens and tell me who can get better pictures. Just saying... gear does matter. :)

Depending on the level of the amateur, there might a fair number of missed shots while that person spends time figuring out how to make the lens zoom, and how to activate the pop-up flash. ;)

There no popup flash on the D3, D3S, D3X, or D4. Do either of you know what you're talking about? You are WAY in over your head and more so with each successive post. Quit while you're behind.

@sapporobaby: I could've sworn that a winky face was a hint for playful sarcasm. For the record, I'm also aware that prime lenses don't have a zoom ring.:D:p:cool::mad::(:apple: (covering my bases ;))

Really don't see a reason for this acrimony.

So, I'm hoping that used D700's will drop in price now.

Hoping it won't, not just yet. I'm hoping to offload mine. I've got a good deal on the D4. Should be around mid-Feb when they arrive.

The D4 won't push the D700 price down, but the replacement probably will - whenever that arrives. I know there are rumours about the specs of that camera and the release date, but even if I did know, I'm not going to comment on them.

is anyone going to get that? There is no way i can afford that camera.. EVER but the 85mm lens looks mighty nice as well, and that i can consider.
...
Your sig says you have a Nikon D7000. You need to think why you wantr to upgrade and what would be best. One thing to look at would be Nikon DSLR Upgrade Advice by Thom Hogan. This is a good summary and it doesn't include the D4 yet.

You need to think about the sensor size. Going to the D4 would be larger sensor so that would change effective magnification for such for your lenses. Also, the D4 is physically larger and noticeably heavier.

Would a D300s do it for you if you wanted/needed something more? Or rather the D300s replacement that should be out this year.

I have a 6 year old D200. It still works well, does what I want, etc. Why upgrade it?

Really the only reasons to upgrade is your current camera is starting to fail or your current camera can't do something you want/need to do. I'd rather spend the money on another lens and probably replace my printer this year.

I'd probably say a D300s is a sideways step, or even a slight downgrade from the D7000 unless you need some of the AF features of the D300s. The D7000 is quite remarkable. I'd probably not go for a D700 either in comparison with a D7000 if I already had that camera.

The issue with a FX format camera is lenses. If you use DX format lenses, that's going to cause some issues with the crop mode. If you use only FX format lenses, there is no problem.

compuwar: From page 62 of Nikon D3 Guide to Digital Photography / Camera Owner's Manual:

Nikon said:
DX lenses are designed for use with DX format cameras and have a smaller picture angle than lenses for 35mm format cameras. If [Auto DX crop] is off and [FX format (36×24)] or [5:4 (30×24)] is selected for [Image area] when a DX lens is attached, the edges of the image may be eclipsed. This may not be apparent in the viewfinder, but when the images are played back you may notice a drop in resolution or that the edges of the picture are blacked out.

I know you are probably aware of that - but for some people that is quite an issue. It hasn't changed on the D3S or the D3X, though it isn't so much of a trouble on the D3X because you still around 10mp to work with if I remember correctly.
