This is normal, any light entering the lens will cause a lens flare. Due to the sapphire lens the ip5 uses it will cause a colour to the flare.

If you any any idea how to take a photo you should know not to take photos that are backlit. The number of times I see someone ask their subject to stand in front of a window with their back to the light is just crazy.

Purple Haze in Photos on I5

Rather amusing that the apple reps response was "your holding it at the wrong angle". LOL! I too took a picture of the sun creeping through the shades this morning and was presented with a glimpse of Hendrix from the vast beyond....

http://wmpoweruser.com/apple-calls-...forgets-to-suggest-you-buy-a-nokia-lumia-920/

let me understand this... If I want to send a picture to someone using my iPhone, I must do the following:

1. Be sure to take the photo indoors and not near any light sources.
2. Due to poor signal while holding the phone in your hand, mms is not suggested.
3. Let's mail a printed copy for safety sake.
4. Open Apple Maps app to find nearest Walmart to print out photo.
5. Drive to walmart.
6. Ask the person in the boat if they know where the nearest Walmart is.
7. Ask the person in the boat if they have a Lumia phone with Nokia Maps.
8. Drive to Walmart using directions obtained from person in lake..
9. Connect iPhone to photo printer.
10. Ask Walmart employee where you can by adapter to connect to printer.
11. Ask if they will accept layaway for $40 adapter.
12. Drive back to lake.
13. Ask Lumia owner to take a night shot for you and send the photo using mms.
14. Accept praise from family about how nice the photo was and talk them into buying one of your Revolutionary iPhones.

Um are you unwell?

According to an E-Mail, Apple says that you are holding your Phone wrong when you are taking pictures.

http://gizmodo.com/5947972/apple-acknowledges-iphone-5-camera-problem-says-youre-holding-it-wrong

Um, yeah, I have had a few pics with purple fringing inside - usually caused by a white or shiny object reflecting the light. Nowhere near as bad as the examples shown, but if "Holding it wrong" actually means "Pointing it in the wrong direction" then Apple probably should ask a few decent photographic experts how to stop it. The glare is fine - I expect that section of a shot to be blown out, but not change color

Didnt they just buy a heap of patents from Kodak? Maybe they should have bought some of the staff too lol

The purple fringing can be mitigated by software, but it can't be fixed.

It is caused by the fixed f/2.4 aperture of the iphone camera lens.

This is why those of us with big, expensive SLR cameras do not go around taking pictures of everything with the aperture wide open.

This is also part of the reason why cell phone cameras suck compared to point and shoot cameras. Even a $50 point and shoot camera will close the aperture down in bright settings to eliminate this problem.

This isn't possible with a fixed lens cell phone camera.

good post
now watch people just disregard this post and continue to say the same things that have been said for the last 13 pages :)

I'm not complaining. I couldn't care less. Mellow the eff out.

So because if bothers you, someone we do not know, it should not bother us? Makes sense to me.

So with the iPhone 5 and the iPhone 4S having a f/2.4 why is the 5 so much worse at what the 4S was doing? Do you think this is just a software flaw in that the 4S was able to work around it a little better? Not trying to troll we are just trying to realize why the 5 is much worse than the 4.

I think the 30% thinner design of the iPhone 5 contributes to the difference people are seeing between the 4S and 5.

Personally, I have taken about 30 or so pictures with my 5 and have not seen the issue... Yet. Maybe because I am a hobby photographer and understand composition and staging of shots, I tend to avoid situations where this effect may occur. Not sure, but there are tons of great pictures coming out of the iPhone 5. Look over at flickr or the "Post your iPhone 5 pictures" thread..

This all makes me wish I hadn't sold my 4S as I would have gone back to it at this point already.

executive relations called me just stating this is "typical behavior" for the phone. and their solution is to change the angle of it.. lol i told her yes it can be typical but wasn't typical on my 4s. She couldnt say anything other than its not a problem with the phone, its a problem with the way i am holding it :p which i true to some extent, its more so a limitation of the hardware but yeah..

This doesn't look like the chromatic aberration you'd see (sometimes, and virtually never to this extent) from shooting a lens wide-open in harsh lighting conditions. CA usually shows up on brightly lit edges, not just in one spot where a bright highlight / glare is present. If it is some kind of CA, it's unlike anything I've seen on any of my lenses, ever.

So what do we think is our solution? Keep up pressure and hope for the best but if its hardware then we're screwed. I'm not spending the next year with a camera that I feel is not up to par with the 4 or the 4S. I do not think getting another phone is an option for my workflow so I feel stuck.

This is the reason, end of. Think more about your shots for exposure. Any photographer that would care about the purple haze would know how to prevent it.

Let me go get my DSLR and take a pic of the sun, ah s*** why's it purple...? :-D

Are all iPhone 5s like this must be with the Safire lens don't understand how some have it and some don't

No purple for me :D:apple:

I would be much more accepting of peoples arguments about photography skills ,camera lens size etc but I have hundrds of 4s photos where if there was any fringe it as not objectionable. My iPhone 5 seems to show purple from any light source close by.... I reall wish apple would try to address this..... It is not helping though when so many reviewers are dismissing it
