So, There's Not Going To Be A "New" iPhone This Summer?

Where does it say "someone at Apple" on that engadget article?

No one at Apple would dare say that.

I'm pretty sure it will be announced at WWDC.

You're right that the date of the upcoming iPhone announcement was not attributed to Apple.

And, yes, whenever the new iPhone is announced it will be at WWDC; Engadget and others are hearing that the 22nd is when WWDC will take place (or at least be the first day of it).

Any chance deep inside 4.0 we may learn some things about the next hardware? Otherwise I wonder if it will just be a beefed up 3GS, more hard drive space, new processor, but nothing major.

I'm not a dev or programmer, but I would say no.
Each OS is specific to the phone it's released for, so if there is a front facing camera or HD video recording, I doubt there would be anything in the 4.0 Beta 1 release for the 3G or 3GS that would point to it.

However, maybe someone else a little more familiar can comment.

I thought the WWDC was set for June 28th to July 2nd, as that is when Apple has the Moscone Center reserved for.

MacRumors definitely had an article that said this back in December. But as I mentioned/linked earlier, Engadget's heard it's on the 22nd of June. I guess we'll find out in a few months.

EDIT: The Moscone Center has changed their website and don't have any events listed between the June 19th and July 6th. So, it could go either way.

They said the iPhone would be introduced on the 22nd of June, but that was just a rumor with no evidence. At least with the other dates, June 28th to July 2nd, the Moscone Center had a listing for a "Corporate Event" on their website, which is what the WWDC has previously been listed under before dates were officially announced.

There will be new hardware.

You hope there will be new hardware. As do I.

What in the world are you talking about?

Would you rather have a new Macbook or orange juice?

I mean, what does one have to do with the other?

Well, clearly the OS hasn't changed much besides backgrounds, folders and multitasking. There are thousands of iPhones right now that can do all of that (including mine).

It just seems like everyone would rather have a new phone with an aluminum casing than a completely redesigned OS.

...which is making me think they're going to hang around one more year with this OS (which they've already shown us) and 3GS, and maybe blow us all away next year with an unrecognizably different iPhone with 4G technology.

Just a thought.

Even apple arnt stupid enough to not release new hardware this year. It's 99.9% certain that there will be an update of some kind. Given that the 3GS only really bumped specs (dont get me wrong, it was a great bump) I think it will be a bigger upgrade this year with a different case design.

With the HTC Evo releasing on 6/13, I wonder if that will bump Apple's time line for an announcement...

Apple can't afford to not release a new iPhone. The new OS puts the iPhone in contention with the Android devices, but without a new phone Apple will surely fall behind Google.

Besides:

Jobs said a new iPhone is coming, and its going to be an A+ update. This year not next!

Hope you're all right. For whatever reason, I feel like there isn't going be new hardware.

The 3G probably doesn't have as much power as they'd like for some of the features. Plus, factor in that most 3G users will be at or close to an upgrade when 4.0 is released. It's a smart way to ensure that the updates you push out don't get stuck on slower hardware and pissed off customers. In fact, I think that's exactly why they'd come out with a hardware upgrade. Essentially force the 3G users and below to bump up to a new iPhone.

Apple will release a new phone for sure. They'll most likely include a few secret software features only available for the newest model too, just like they did the 3G (GPS tracking) and 3GS (voice control, video recording).

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 3_1_3 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/528.18 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0 Mobile/7E18 Safari/528.16)

The SDK includes references to a front camera, a camera flash, 1280x720 video recording, and 4.0 has a service running on the phone called iChatAgent.

Update... "update" makes me think he was talking about what we saw today. I know it's just a matter of semantics, but if there was a new "A+" phone coming, I feel like he'd call it an upgrade. Updates are downloadable.

This was an A+ update in Apple's opinion. They see the threads, they know what people want. They took care of multitasking, folders, customizable backgrounds and other things in one update... there's that word again.

Hope there's a new phone, just don't want to be disappointed if there isn't.

First off, why are you so pessimistic? You're reading way to much into basically every piece of evidence presented in front of you.

Explain to me how this year's cycle is different from last year's (besides the 1 month delay from the iPad)? There was no hint of the 3GS in last years presentation but it came anyway, just like everyone predicted. Why is this year so different.

I'll tell you one thing, Apple's UPGRADE needs to be even better than the 3GS due to competitors catching up and surpassing the iPhone.

One more thing.....could actually read the link I provided. Here's the quote:

"- Next iPhone coming is an A+ update"

NOT next iPhone OS, THE NEXT IPHONE!

And before you say "well, the next iPhone could be in 2011", if Jobs knew they would need until 2011 to release the next phone, there is no way he could know what was going to be in it!

So please, tell me where you are coming up with the idea that there isn't going to be a new iPhone? What evidence do you have?

there is a trend here

2.0 was released in march, new iphone next june, 3.0 following march, new phone following june, 4.0 in april, new phone in... Not sure if this means they will be a month late or they'll stick to june.

2.0 was released in march, new iphone next june, 3.0 following march, new phone following june, 4.0 in april, new phone in... Not sure if this means they will be a month late or they'll stick to june.

Exactly. There is a very definite pattern here, that Apple has not strayed from. The only reason why 4.0 was released in April was because of the iPad.

sterling3763;9608971They'll announce the new phone on the 22nd and likely have it on sale on July 2nd or so. [URL="http://www.engadget.com/2009/06/08/iphone-3gs-announced/" said:
Apple announced the 3GS last year on June 8th and had it up for sale on the 19th. [/URL] They announced the 3G on June 9, 2008 and it was released on July 11th, 2008.

I totally LOVE your date of July 2nd! I hope it is that date because that is the exact date I will be eligible to upgrade my phone and I will jump from 3G to the new one. :)

I know a few people that work for apple a few mos ago one said that Apple is really trying to focus on the iPad release so they probably won't release a new phone and now some of them are saying there are things going on at work that suggest a new iPhone will be released this summer

So please, tell me where you are coming up with the idea that there isn't going to be a new iPhone? What evidence do you have?

The same amount of evidence you have that there will be a new iPhone this summer.

It's all speculation, and at this point, all I'm saying is: It's POSSIBLE that they don't release a new phone this summer.

Cool. Did you find that, or do you have a link to show this?

Actually, 2.0 Beta was released in March, and the new iPhone was July, not June as you said.
It'll most likely be a June announcement/July release.

Color me Shocked...

"...which is making me think they're going to hang around one more year with this OS (which they've already shown us) and 3GS, and maybe blow us all away next year with an unrecognizably different iPhone with 4G technology."

I continue to be amazed at the number of posters today across the various OS4 threads that think we saw the WHOLE thing. There's no way Jobs n' company showed us the whole thing.

The OP is just plain wrong, the evidence "circumstantial" as it may appear to some is overwhelming. :apple:

New hardware will be announced in around two months. Just like new macs will be announced before then. Just like new iPods in sept and probably new ipads in Jan now. That's the apple cycle same as every other year.
Today was a preview of the software. There will be much more to come.

I think you guys are confusing release with announce. Apple "announces" the new iPhone OS a few months prior to give Devs a heads up of what to expect and to get their apps ready. The software is released with the new hardware.

Expect 4.0 to be released a few days prior to the hardware release, just like last year to prevent a total meltdown of the servers.

WTF, is everyone retarded. Steve clearly said that they are releasing a new iPhone before OS 4 is released. Specifically, he said that almost all of the features will work on 3Gs. What do people think will run all of te features.

It's POSSIBLE the world will come to an end tomorrow, too. There's no reason to go start a thread about it. Chances are, we'll live to see Saturday. Only a crazy person would spend so much time arguing otherwise.
