The same amount of evidence you have that there will be a new iPhone this summer.

It's all speculation, and at this point, all I'm saying is: It's POSSIBLE that they don't release a new phone this summer.

Not really. There have numerous articles (many of them on this site) speaking of industry insiders saying a new iPhone will be out this summer. After that, we look at how Apple has been and is a very predictable company, we have a buyer's guide for heavens sake!

After that we have evidence in the old 3.0 OS and the new 4.0 OS of a few new iPhones, indicating Apple is already working on the next one (so this one must be done/close to release).

What do you have? A gut feeling?

I'm sorry my friend, but because Apple has released an iPhone every summer since the original, and there isn't a single piece of evidence to say other wise this year...the burden of proof falls on you.

I think you guys are confusing release with announce. Apple "announces" the new iPhone OS a few months prior to give Devs a heads up of what to expect and to get their apps ready. The software is released with the new hardware.

Expect 4.0 to be released a few days prior to the hardware release, just like last year to prevent a total meltdown of the servers.

I'm fully aware of Apple's habits of releasing dev kits 3-4 months early. I'm using one of the dev kits as I type. If you read any of my previous posts you'll this. But regardless, they do in a way release the software....not directly but they release info about it to the public and an SDK to us devs.

I would bet on a late July release for any new "iPhone HD" model. I just hope it finally has a higher resolution screen, so I can upgrade from my 3G model. The 3GS just didn't seem like that much of an upgrade (although the CPU is significantly better).

I can see no reason why there won't be a new model this summer and it will probably take advantage of software features not covered today.

iPhone OS 3 was unveiled in March 2009, but there was no mention of recording video until the 3GS was launched in June.

You are exactly right! They had the OS4 "Sneak Peak" to get some of the major features out of the way so when they demo the new iPhone, they can spend more time on the new phone and other features associated with the hardware like the front facing camera, 5MP camera and other things.

apple loves to make things thinner and smaller, the iphone is likely going to get that treatment this year since it didnt't get it last year.

I can't believe there is a three page topic on a 'hunch.'

As the old adage goes.....follow the money!!!! Apple stands to sell 10's of millions of more iPhones with an updated model....especially for 3G and older model owners who will want to take advantage of the new features. There is no way they aren't releasing some sort of hardware update this summer.

i still have the 3g model. if the rumours are true about camera flash in the next model, then yes i will upgrade.

iPhone OS 3.0 announcement: no mention of video or any other 3GS exclusive features. Apple doesn't talk about new features that can't be supported yet, obviously.

Original iPod touch: September 13, 2007

iPhone OS 2.0 announced and demoed: March 6, 2008
iPhone 3G and OS 2.0 release date announced: June 6, 2008
iPod touch update: September 9, 2008

See the pattern? Here's what we can predict from it:

iPhone OS 4.0 announced and demoed: April 8, 2010
iPhone update, OS 4.0 release date announced: June 2010
iPod touch update: September 2010

It's POSSIBLE the world will come to an end tomorrow, too. There's no reason to go start a thread about it. Chances are, we'll live to see Saturday. Only a crazy person would spend so much time arguing otherwise.

Take it easy, Sparky. I guess I'm crazy to think Apple would beef up 4.0 and try to bleed out additional sales of the 3Gs for another year.

What if the big announcement everyone expects in June is that they're releasing a 3Gs that can run on CDMA?

I think that'd be equally as big as a new iPhone.
