They must've departed from the usual set of directors, but Small Worlds' pacing and direction seemed oddly misplaced in the Torchwood series. It lacked energy and suspense.

Overall, story was a bit flat.

Hmmm... that doesn't sound like much of a departure from the earlier episodes. The script in particular is generally terrible.

Remember Captain Jack at the end of episode 3, "a million shadows of human emotion... [whispered] we've just gotta learn to live with them [\whispered]". Ugh.

I watched the third? The one with the old killer. None since then. If they're going to have it more 'adult' it needs to be more intelligently plotted, needs some more genuinely thrilling moments or have bouncing boobies.

I was meaning to watch it, but then I found out it was on whilst I was away. So brilliant. I managed to record the first 3 episodes and I'm yet to watch them, but I saw we're up to episode 5 now! So I think I'll wait till the next 3 come out on BBC3!

I've heard good things about it though. A little more grown up than Doctor Who and a jolly good spin off, I hear!

I've got to say that I'm not overly impressed so far. It's watchable, it has its moments, but it's not exactly something I'd go out of my way to watch, unlike Doctor Who itself.

Still, Jack's spinoff is doing better than K9 and Company did, so there is that at least.

Greeks Bearing Gifts

Interesting episode... one of the better ones, although that's not saying much. Just an aside, I had thought of Torchwood as a large sprawling organization.

Good episode. There are scenes of lesbian alien sex and the ramifications of the ability of reading peoples' darkest secrets. We also get a hint of Jack's apparent lack of a soul, or would seem to allude.

Well, I was kinda watching last night, saw a few bits of it between season one Horatio Caine's cheesy lines(Five US Rocks!). I liked the part when Tosh could hear what Owen & Gwen were saying, when Gwen was thinking about how "Out" tosh's clothes looked, made me laugh!

I'll have to watch that part again. I miss a bit of the dialogue because of the rapid fire delivery and heavy British accent. Sounds feisty! :)

I think Gwen was saying how rubbish Tosh looked with her boots over her jeans! Meow! Then there was something that owen said that i just caught, something like "I'll sit down until it subsides!" Sounded rude to me!

I think the character development on all but Captain Jack sucks - after the last episode I realised that I don't actually like any of the characters bar Jack... I'm sure this isn't the intended effect, but they're all so annoyingly shallow.
I agree that the reason why Jack isn't readable and the fact he winces at Tosh "It's like you're dead" comment makes things quite interesting. They really have to start making the supporting cast likeable again, or start bumping them off and replacing them with people that viewers can emote with...

I watched the latest episode and I felt cheated. After all that I wanted huge monsters with wings and big teeth. Or maybe walking sharks with fricken laser beams on their heads. And the part where Captain Jack comes in and saves everyone - it could have been from a spoof. I've watched 4 episodes and it's all been a steady downhill from the first one. Turning off for good I think.

They Keep Killing Suzie

The best episode so far. :)

Bringing people back from the dead, blood stained walls and the mystery of a second "risen mitten".

Torchwood is truly some of the worst TV I have ever seen.
First episodes of Doctor Who wasn't anything to write home about either. I'm giving Torchwood the benefit of the doubt for the remainder of the season or until DW begins next season. :)

Has it got any better in the last few weeks? I watched the first few but the one about the Faeries (sp?) was just too painful to watch.

No, and the last episode just may have been be the worst yet.

Oh man, when you put it like that I feel like:

Worst Episode Ever

Note to self: Never criticise sci-fi shows on tech forums.

Random Shoes

Heh, I quite liked the first half of Random Shoes... it changed pace a bit in the second half but otherwise an episode that made me think a little about the consequences of life and death — hallmarks of a good show, IMO. :)

Spoilers coming up:

Who was the mystery bidder? Why did our hero take random photographs of people's shoes with his cell phone camera? Didn't you find him sleeping with Gwen slightly creepy, although strangely romantic too? Why could she feel his presence when the others couldn't and do you think there is a deeper reason why Jack actively sought her out to join Torchwood. Ah, the mysteries deepen.

The ending with him being resurrected from the dead was great! I love the symbolism.

luv,

Weren't the last 3 episodes really warming up?

Greeks Bearing Gifts was a good take on the "mind reading" theme, though it's funny how many people say they wouldn't like it. I'm getting more convinced that Toshiko Sato is supposed to be an ancestor of Hoshi Sato — what with all that translation software.

They Keep Killing Suzie is great just because of the "resurrection gauntlet" — as the producer rightly said in the making-of show, this was the kind of plot device they would probably make an entire series out of, in American TV.

Random Shoes was probably the Torchwood equivalent of the Abzorbaloff episode in this year's Doctor Who. But the unresolved sexual tension was excellently, erm, resolved ... well it was romantic enough to make me teary, and shameless enough to rip off Jesus for a good ending that most shows wouldn't do.

What I'm really looking forward to is the episode in 3 weeks' time, where we get to go back to the Blitz again (like when we originally met Captain Jack).

CK.
