I'm back at the PowerMax lab. I'm running the Radeon HD 5770 on the 2006 Mac Pro. Working fine.

Right now I'm checking out my hypothesis that it is just as fast as the 5870 on the "first gen" Mac Pro.

Let's say the gap has narrowed to the point that the cost of the 5870 is questionable for a 2006 Mac Pro. Here's one example:

X-Plane 9.6.1 at 1920x1200:
5870 = 83 fps
5770 = 80 fps

Full report coming later today.

Which motherboard firmware is that machine running? (My 1,1 has the MP11.005C.B08 version.)

What settings are you using for xplane. You should test it at a big airport such as Miami international set the texture to extreme etc..

I play plane with a 4870 with good results but if I try to push it then it might get choppy.

Ok I've read almost every post. But I'm noob in this.

I've a MacPro3,1 with 8800GT and I'd like to get a LED Cinema Display 27" when is being released this September.

I've read this in LED Cinema Display's specifications:
Peripherals and cables

Three self-powered USB 2.0 ports
Kensington security slot
One cable with three connectors: Mini DisplayPort with audio support, universal MagSafe (up to 85W), USB 2.0
AC power cord

-----
So if I flash an ATI 5870 PC card with MDP wont work the audio support?
I think that maybe opening the videocard there would be some possibilities in making an audio bridge to a jack or optical audio...

I dont know but I'd like to have a LED Cinema display 27" working perfectly on my MacPro...

Hi,

I would suggest you check out some of the PC flashed focused threads, or head over to netkas.org forums ( http://forum.netkas.org/index.php/board,5.0.html ) regarding PC flashed 5870's. This thread is about using Apples 5870/5770 cards in older mac pros.

Hi!
Thanks. Anyway I don't mind in getting an Apple's one.
I just want to make a new LED cinema display 27" working in a 2008 Mac Pro. That's it

Next assignment? Compare the two cards to each other in the 2008 and 2009 Mac Pro.

If you need a remote mad scientist, let me know. I'd be glad to help. I dying to see the results of a 2008 MP with the 8800 thrown in the mix.

I have 2 monitors. A 24" HP LP2475w and a Dell 2005FPW.

I plan to buy the 5770 for my 1,1 Mac Pro. What would be the best way to connect to both monitors? The HP as Display Port and HDMI as well as all the usual connections. The Dell has DVI and VGA.

Thanks.

Glyn

I've noticed none of these comparisons pit the 5770 against the Radeon 3870. How do they compare?

I have a 3870; am wondering if it's worth upgrading to the 5770 at all. This may be the last new video card still compatible with the 2006 Mac Pro, the way things are going...

The 3870 performs similarly to, or a bit slower than, the 8800 GT in games.

I think the 3870 is a rare card, so they may not have one to test with.

Here's another twist.

Radeon HD 5870 and 5770 in the 2006 Mac Pro versus four older GPUs:

Next assignment? Compare the two cards to each other in the 2008 and 2009 Mac Pro.

Shame the 5770 doesn’t pull away from the performance of the 4870 much, but I'm looking for a no fuss solution and the 5770 from Apple is cheaper and in most cases more outperforms the 4870. I assume I can keep my nvidia 7300 (yes I still own that horrendously outdated GPU) in the secondary PCI slot to drive other DVI monitors?

I'll definately be purchasing! Barefeats/Rob, whomever you are - I and as you can see everyone else here is extremely thankful for your sterling and ongoing efforts to give us obsolete Mac Pro users (a niche if there ever was one) a thorough review of the what options are the best for upgrading our machines. Thankyou!

What do we belive about WoW and 5770 comparing to 5870? Barefeats did you try it?
I got a 8800GT today and I am thinking about upgrading that to something new to squeeze a few more months out of my Mac Pro 2006.

Some advice please

Some advice please;

I'm a Mac pro 1,1 (xeon 4x2.66 bought in 2007) owner also and have been watching this thread and the barefeats site quite closely trying to see how these new cards fare and more importantly what actually works.
The big concern I have is I'm driving my 2 large monitors, a Dell 2407 and a Dell 2711 (which has a Displayport, but is currently using the 2nd dual link dvi of the 8800)

I bought my macpro origionally with the x1900xt (512) and replaced that with the 8800 gt (512) 2? years ago.

I'm considering many options, and would like to have a card with 1gb Vram as I do 3d work and 512 is pretty min spec these days.

I keep reading mixed reviews about if more than the DVI ports work for the 5770 and 5870 in the 2006 macpro, as ideally i'd buy the 5870 and run both monitors from that card.

Could I run 2x 5770's and point 1 DVI to each monitor? (if the MDP's don't work for the 2006's)

What about moving the 8800 to the 8x slot, beside the 5770 in the 16x lane?

Will the apple 4870 (only 512 and $$$) drive both monitors (the mini display port works along with the daul link dvi)?

4870 PC 1gb flashed (if i could find one)?

Thanks for your help!

The 5770 is NOT faster than the 4870

There seems to be this fallacy that the 5770 is faster than the 4870
The 4870 is FASTER at almost every game out there mac and pc it's also better for motion on all macpro versions.

Head over to anandtech for benchmarks.

People get over it the 5770 is a mid to low range card which is 10-20% slower than the 4870

Only thing going for it lower power consumption and better opencl performance the latter being a joke this moment in time

I'm assuming all these tests are being done with OSX games. Is it being assumed that the 5870 will run on a 2006 mac pro at the same (very poor) speed under Boot Camp and windows?

If I cross fire 2 5770 cards will I be able to boot my machine up into OSX without doing anything (I don't know anything about cross fire)? Also, don't these cards need 16x slots or something but there is only one 16x slot on the 2006 mac pro.

Basically, I only run games under Boot Camp on a 2006 mac pro using a 8800GT card. I want to upgrade to the best possible card without having to flash anything while also being able to boot up under OSX - without having to change anything. What would my best option be?

Hey guys... good news on the 5870. Thanks, but what do you make of this comment I found it on the Apple site reviewing the 5870:

The default 2008 Mac Pro contains two 6-pin 75-watt PCIE power cables for graphics cards. Unfortunately, the 5870 requires one 6-pin and one 8-pin 125-watt power cable. Unless you 1) buy a separate power supply and run another wire through a hole in the back of your Mac 2) take out your optical drive and splice the 4-pin 12V with one of the 6-pin PCIE to a bare 8-pin PCIE male connector.

Short answer: no, unless you are confident in your modding abilities.

Is this guy for real ?
