correct not for the typical refresh, i do believe its a total redisgn it would be more likely to have an announcement but its hard to pretict what apple will do

I think we could potentially get a redesign without a big launch event. There was a big event to introduce the new MacBook Air's design because it was a really radical design, but if the new MacBook Pros largely follow the MacBook Airs then I don't think there's much need for a big event as it would basically be a rerun of the MBA launch.

A lot of people seem to be confident that Apple will release at least a 15" MacBook Pro on 4/24 which is the day after Intel publicly announces the ivy bridge tips. I'm really hoping for it but I'm thinking Apple will hold off until they can release Mountain Lion alongside everything. What do you guys think?

I just e-mailed Apple support in Canada and they told me they lunch a new MacBook Pro on 2....

I sure would enjoy it if it went down that way. I'm ready to purchase.

Having said that, I think an announcement on the 24th would come with some caveats. For one, I don't expect they'll just announce them sans keynote if they're sporting retina displays, and I'm about 60% as confident that they won't release them without a keynote if they're heavily redesigned.

So with that in mind, I don't think it's likely that they'll come out next week, unless they're just updating the internals and leaving the chassis and screen as is. Either way, I'm cool with it. Just ready to buy!

I agree with that! Apple usually gives journalists about a week notice to attend their launch events so 2012 MacBook Pro will either be 'quiet' internal update (I hope not) or the official launch 'slim' MBP is more than a week away (at least).

I would have thought that retina displays would have made the parts leak loop by now in a similar way to the ipad one.

I think it'll be a spec bump release personally.

I hope so! The sooner they update them the better - I have one of the first unibodies, which is recently out of applecare, and I am in serious need of an upgrade. My trackpad is flaky, the battery is losing it, it won't accept more than 4GB RAM, the MDP is unreliable, it sometimes doesn't stay asleep, and last week the hard drive died. I'm desperate for a new one so come on apple, help a brother out!

Won't be released until Apple is done riding the iPad high.

They just released the iPad to more countries so it will be a few weeks yet I'd guess.

You know, I never really thought about that, but I actually agree with you...the iPad is still so new so chances are they're still focusing on that...

for someone who wants to get an MBP right now, at what point do I stop waiting for the new ones and just get the current one?

When you need a computer and don't just merely want one.

Historically the Macbooks haven't been released at large "events" other than the MBA since it was a radical departure. Even Mountain Lion was done under the radar.

It's just a want - I have a PC and I "want" a MBP for recreational use

As I recall, the last unibody MBP design was released at a fairly substantial "event." I imagine we'd know a week or so in advance if such an event were in the offing. I cannot imagine we'll be treated to a mere spec bump with all the rumors (rumours for those of ye on my side of the pond) of a slimmer or lighter design floating around.

That said, I think the chances are very good that we'll end up with a 15" MBA (more or less) rather than a slimmed down 15" MBP. Even without the optical drive, the weight difference would not be significant.

I am so tired of lugging my lovely i7 MBP around - because of the weight - and I'd welcome a slimmed down alternative. But the "slimmed down" has to incorporate a FW800 port, amongst other things. I literally cannot imagine such a machine. I suspect we will end up with a scaled version of the current 13" MBA, which is in itself a fine machine. I'd probably buy it to get the bigger screen real estate and save a pound or so in carry weight.

I would place my bets at all of them at once and not the 15/17" sooner than the rest. As Dual Core won't be out till June and the 13" will probably not come in only Quad versions, I put my money on July.

I personally am still happy with my 2010. I hope Haswell and high res Displays show together in late 2013. That would be my upgrade.

Personally? I'd wait until the formal announcement then. You could always move to grab a 2011 if you don't like what you see, although I'd move quickly then so that your only choice isn't the refurb store.

Keep in mind that grabbing the latest and greatest isn't always the best idea either. You're taling an untested chip design that has already proven problematic to produce, with a potential redesign that's untested in the MBP itself. It is a recipe for issues, albeit Apple's QA is better than most.

Liquid metal

I have a feeling the redesign this year is going to be limited (retina + battery). I would think they will sport liquid metal in their next machine. If they do a redesign now, it will take another 3-4 years to incorporate liquid metal in to pros. I'd say iPhone and MBA will go to liquid metal first and mbp will go liquid metal in a year.

This is the only reason why I doubt the 4/24 launch.

and their earnings are tomorrow, which is much bigger news than a macbook pro refresh. there's a lot riding on tomorrow's conference call given the recent movement in the stock.

I hope an announcement comes tomorrow.

Given that my 2009 MBP just died, needing a 4th major repair on a machine that "looks brand-new" according to the Genius who verified the hardware failure, I need a new machine.

Thanks to AppleCare, Apple will be footing the bill, I'd just hate to end-up getting a new machine just prior to a major refresh. (I can limp along with my iPad and Mac Pro, for a week or two, but not much longer.)

But, the reality is that the last time Apple redesigned the MBP, there was an event, announced 5 days prior:

That's one of the reasons why I don't think we'll see a redesign as of yet (apart from the lack of parts leaked and that our redesign source is traced all the way to the questionably reliable Digitimes). Perhaps come Haswell. Or Apple might make us wait until the next set of processors are out on June 3 then give us an announcement for a Keynote Event. Hope you guys can wait. :D

As for me, I'm hoping the Macbook Pro page will quietly change tomorrow or next Tuesday.

I am interested in this info also. I will soon be buying my first Mac laptop.
Debating on the AIR vs PRO. I have a pc desktop (spend most time when home) and being a pilot, use my Ipad 1 on the road. But I now want to venture into wordpress, and working on documents (word or pages) so I am either going to be patient and wait for the refresh, or pick a current air or pro (still deciding).

All the more reason to bump a product refresh in front of the media/financial spotlight though, to show they're still innovating.
