I am a bit torn. On the surface, I don't need GPS or swimming (nice to have but not going to impact me on a day to day basis). I am thinking long term though, will the first gen, S0, watch be sufficient to use for another 18-24 months. This is assuming apple does not upgrade the watch every year, that means waiting until 2018 for the 3rd generation. While watchOS 3 runs great on the S0 version, will watchOS 4 and potentially 5 continue to do so?

Lots of unknowns has me pretty undecided.
If you wear it every day then it probably won't matter if wOS 4 is compatible since the battery will likely be cycled out by them.;)

Sticking with my SS until the AppleCare runs out! A lot of apps came and went on my watch as they were appallingly slow. Omnifocus is the one exception, and I use it many times a day. I'd really like to bring workflow back but it stopped sending messages (suspect it was an OS upgrade that borked it) and a variant of the "home ETA" workflow was the most frequent one I used. Other than OF (which was already quick) I hope Bring! keeps its speed and I'm happy. My watch has been drenched in the rain whilst taking photographs at football and plods on, if I ever want a watch for the pool, the vivoactive does the trick for me, so I'm good.

This is always the question with iPhones and iPads as well. You just have to wait and see. How long the device will be able to function with reasonable speed has a lot to do with how you use it in my experience. Sometimes an OS version that is a couple of generations or so ahead of your device will slow it down, but in my experience it's often the apps that are the problem. Apps that are two or three generations beyond your device are often designed to take advantage of newer hardware. If your app needs are relatively modest you will probably get more mileage out of a device than someone who runs more hardware intensive apps (especially games).

When the original Apple Watch came out there was a lot of speculation that the upgrade cycle would be longer than that of the iPhone. I think the reasoning was that the things most of us use the Watch for are so much more modest in terms of hardware demands, and also the idea that people may not want to pay to upgrade a watch as frequently as they upgrade their iPhones. A more frequent upgrade cycle makes me want to stick with the less expensive aluminum cases, while I might splurge on the SS if I knew I would keep it for at least 3 years.

We can't predict what Apple will do. Will Series 3 be in one or two years? Even three? As competitive as the smartwatch market is getting, I bet there will be a new series within 18 months again. So I would just relax and enjoy the Watch OS3 update when it becomes available. Enjoy that until the watch starts to feel sluggish again, and then consider upgrading.

I have a feeling that long-term durability might be the deciding factor for when some of us upgrade. It may be a matter of time before the seals fail or the battery life starts to tank. Even if I just get two years out of my AWS I will feel like it was well worth it. Even if I don't sell it the cost of owning it will be less than 50 cents a day.

Used, but in good condition. I think I'm going to go with it. I don't use the GPS on half my runs anyway, since I prefer to run by feel (old habit from college). Thanks!

Ended up going for it. No real comment on performance (Watch OS 2 is slow, not unbearable, I'm excited for 3) but I love the heft of the stainless steel and the leather band. There's a small scratch on the screen that I'm going to see if the Apple Store can't do something about tomorrow.

I didn't upgrade. The new watch features seem great if you're working out all the time, but don't offer much for anything else. Faster is good, brighter display is good, GPS I probably wouldn't notice much. There wasn't a feature for me where I felt, "Okay I'm sold, here's my money." I want new sensors, and features that make my life easier and more efficient in a digital world. So I'll stick with my 1st gen for another year.

$350 for a GPS? not upgrading. As faster processor on a device that can't do anything is sort of a non starter. It's great at telling time and sending me notifications. not much else. LTE or bust.

Whatever happened to the thought that at least  Watch (SS) would be upgradeable?

Once the original watch series turns 2 perhaps Apple will offer a service that upgrades the internal hardware and re-seals everything. Or maybe they will offer a trade-in program and the ability to purchase refurbished models at a discount. I could see trade-in for the Sport or even SS, but the Edition? For the Edition, and maybe for the SS, it seems like the there should be an offer to recondition with new internals and new seals.

With the new software, I don't see the need. I always wear my Watch in water with no issue, and I always have my phone with me, so GPS is no biggie.

When the Series 2 goes on sale I might pick up a second watch to rotate with the series 1. Not gonna be in line for though.

I have an SE I just bought in April that I'm perfectly happy with. I'm tempted by the Jet Black 7, but it's still larger than I want to carry, and doesn't really offer anything else more than I already have. I might be more tempted to upgrade if it had the dual camera, but the Plus is way too big for my needs.

That said, even if I were upgrading, I would wait at least 6 months to see how the headphone thing shakes out.

I just don't see the features being compelling enough, unless maybe I were still using an iPhone 5s, to warrant upgrading immediately. And there's a lot of disappointment over how poorly Apple handled the removal of the headphone jack. Too many kludged solutions to replace basic headphone jack functionality. This will get better as third parties address in the marketplace, but there's just not enough about the 7 to justify me trying to find work arounds to things I simply take for granted now.
Probably posted in the wrong thread :) but I will add that I ordered the Jet Blank 7+ 128gig. I know it will show fingerprints and easier to scratch but it may be the first iPhone I won't have in a case of some kind. :)

Back to Apple Watch. I'm going to pickup a dedicated workout 42mm Nike

I'm in the camp that only uses their watch for time, step counting, Apple Pay, and notifications. Looking forward to trying OS3's new features though. I got the stainless steal version, which only seems justifiable if I keep it longer than one upgrade cycle. I was tempted by the extra screen brightness and processor speed, and considered getting a sports version if I did upgrade for those features. But for now I'll stick with my first gen. As a consultation, I've told myself I get the new Air Pods when they get released next month. Plus I've preordered a 7 Plus. I have to show some restraint

I would upgrade just for the newer hardware but right now I have other things to do. I'm happy whith my current watch running OS3.

Main thing I'm waiting for is a new MacBook Pro. I have a feeling if I bought another watch and the phone that's on the way getting another Mac is really going to add up to an issue at home. Laying low on the watch for now is fine with me. Maybe after the holidays when it gets quiet I will be in a better position to upgrade.

I just bought my current AW Sport in early July and quite honestly see no reason to upgrade right now. The Series 2 certainly does have some nice upgrades (the new S2 chip being most significant, IMO) but I will gladly use my current one until retailers start having sales on it.

i'm holding off for now. I don't need the GPS, the only thing appealing to me is the new processor and the more waterproofing. I'm going to see how well my watch handles the new OS 3 and see. My biggest complaint was that it was slow to load apps, so i'm hoping this solves that issue, if not i'll reconsider. Also i'm not happy there is no SS with black sports band. and I already have an apple white band...

I figure that, since I've already been getting my Watch wet for a year in showers and pools, I may as well just keep it up, and, if it finally dies, I'll just get the new model.

My employer as part of a health plan gave you a credit to buy a watch at beginning of year. Basically enough for a sport 38mm

If it works on a release 2 i'll upgrade. If it doesn't I will wait and my every other upgrade policy I do on my phone will continue.
