I'd rather pay $799 for a XR with 401 ppi screen than $749 for a XR with 326 ppi screen. I do understand many wouldn't though.

The main problem here is there is too much of a jump in cost between the model lines.

The XR 128 GB is US$799. The Max 256 GB (since there is no 128 GB model) is $1249. That's a difference of US$450 or 56% percent. Seriously, WTF.

Everyone has to make their own choice depending on what they want or have to spend.

I would say the iPhone 7 is now Apples ‘budget’ offering and the XR is aiming squarely at the mainstream market. I think the XR is beyond their mid tier pricing so it’s difficult to refer to it as ‘budget’ IMO.

It is hard to use the word “budget” on any Apple device but in their marketing the X-RAY is as close as they can get with some of the bells and whistles.

It is a strange one though as it’s got the new form factor and is a great looking device, but in some ways is inferior to an 8+ which is slightly cheaper. Then in other ways it has a better chip and supposedly better battery life. It’s a year where consumers who compare the tech really have to decide on which pros and cons they want to spend their money on. I didn’t feel it was quite good enough for my upgrade.

If you thought iPhone 4,5,6,7,8 had a good screen. Xr will be just as sharp and probably better colors. It has the same ppi as all those devices.

It does seem like carrying through the 401 ppi resolution to the XR would have eliminated complaints among the tiny fraction of Apple users who actually sweat these details such as the people on this forum. Apple has a $1T valuation for a reason. You can disagree w/a lot of their decisions, but overall they seem to be getting things right. Also consider that “HD” in Retina HD no longer has the state-of-the-art sound it once did as “4K” is now the new buzzword. HD sounds dated so maybe Apple did not want to market it as such as opted for Liquid Retina. Someone in the Apple Store in Berkeley told me the XR has a “super Liquid Retina” screen - obviously needs some retraining, but the marketing emphasis has clearly changed.

Apple is good at making these choices difficult. Good luck and I hope you enjoy no matter what you end up with.

It will be interesting to see comparisons between this and the 8+. Obviously a bigger screen but with that same ancient screen tech, is it worth more $$$?

I can definitely see the difference in screen clarity between my 326 ppi 6s and my wife's 401 ppi 7+. The 7+ screen is so much nicer.
Maybe Apple has conjured something up that enhances the clarity of the Xr screen as compared to the 326 ppi screens as we know them, I have to see for myself.
As it is, I'm thinking either a Xs Max or a 8+. Xr not so much because of the screen.
Ofcourse I like the Max better than the 8+ but I'm still not sure that I want to spend that amount of cash on a phone. The 8+ is a great enough phone to me. Haven't decided yet.

It’s a nice phone I can recommend. Seeing the XR launch I figured the 8+ was the better buy for me and the fact it’ll be the last iPhone with a home button really appealed to me. I’m enjoying the telephoto option with the camera mostly and the screen is definitely a lot nicer than my 6S as you’d expect as it’s 1080p. There’s some great deals on it right now too which is why I think it’s probably being forgotten about a bit in the surge for the latest form factor.

Other factors for me are the extra costs besides retailprice of the Max: Apple care is more costly as is getting the thing repaired. And the problems going on especially with the Xs antenna, where we still are not sure it's not a hardware problem that won't ever be fixed, hmmm. And walking around with a pricy phone that might attract the wrong kind of attention in certain circumstances.

I know I will like the 8+ a lot, and the Max even better (if it's not compromised, otherwise I might feel ripped off). But it's a crazy € 450 extra. That's a 2018 iPad 128Gb, an Apple watch or a fond memory of a weekend in Paris with the misses.

Just hold the Max and XR next to each other when they launch and see if you can spot the difference. I can’t tell the difference between a 8 (326 ppi, = XR) and 8 Plus (401 ppi).

Yes, it’s only 326 ppi, but so is your iPhone 6. Yes, it’s only LCD, but the LCDs have always looked great and this one is supposed to be even better. OLED has its downsides too.

For me its night and day. And is why i've stuck to the plus models since introduced.

Its also why i've opted for the iPhone X now that its discounted. The Xr just doesn't sit right with me as a former plus user. I moved to the plus models for better resolution 5 yrs ago so 'downgrading' was simply not an option. Camera/SoC or not.

The screen is arguably the biggest 'spec' for me when deciding on a smartphone and i am willing to sacrifice some other aspects for it.

And for the price, the Xr is by no means a budget phone. But the Xr will sell well because the average joe/jane wont notice the difference.

But for me...its a product that has great features but is ultimately a letdown.

Choice was easy for me. XR is a smaller phone with a much bigger screen and will have a much better chip in it and better battery life. The plus phones are just stupidly big. All of that means much more to me than ppi. I own a MacBook pro and an iPad Pro with lower ppi than the XR and both look phenomenal.

The XR is 8mm shorter and 3mm narrower than the Plus iPhones so I very much doubt a real physical difference would be noticed in general use. They are both significantly large handsets.

Fair enough. We all balance our own pros en cons. To me if the screen clarity is the same as the current 326 ppi screens, then the Xr is a definite no no.

Gotta say, the iPhone Xʀ actually tempted me more than the iPhone XS, but I wanted the flagship features (dual cameras, OLED, etc). I think the iPhone Xʀ will be a very good seller.

Same here and a retina iMac as well. Having a smaller form factor in XR definately a Plus - no pun intended:)

Of course it will be better. It has a Liquid Retina screen. The world's first Liquid Retina screen.

I'm nearly certain you're joking, but I find that term "Liquid Retina" annoying.
It has lower PPI than the Plus, and lacks the 3D Touch, bet yet it's their most "advanced LCD" they claim.

What does "Liquid Retina" mean aside from the marketing garb? I highly doubt anything at all.

Apple was never about having the best specs in the market. Apple is about selling products with great experience that make their owner happy. And the XR is just that. A fine product that will make it’s owner happy. In the end that’s all that matters.
