I'm disappointed with the inertial scrolling, at least on the Macbook internal trackpad. (I'll reserve judgement on the Magic Pad, as I don't have one.)

It's NOTHING like the inertial scrolling on the iPhone. It doesn't bounce off the end (which I think, as trivial as that sounds, adds greatly to the realism of the effect), and it's jumpy enough to be damn annoying.

no software update available???

I have a macbook 5.2 which is a mid 2009 macbook. I run software update and it says no updates are available. I did that twice Am I missing something?

Thanks
Ben

Why on Earth wouldn't early 2008 MacBook Pro support the 3 finger drag?

If this can be done via BetterTouchTool I'm sure Apple can.

I don't know, but Apple does this stuff all the time.

Ermmm...so what I don't understand is why you have to choose between navigating or dragging? You can only do the three finger drag when the pointer is on the title bar and I don't think the pointer has ever been on the title bar when I've been trying to navigate! So why not have both at the same time? You have to bring the pointer over to the page you want to navigate on anyway.

Anyone know of a way to invert the scrolling? Like say per the iPhone. Since if you drag down on the iPhone your going up, but on the MBP you drag down to go down. Same thing with pics in iPhoto. Thats always kinda bugged me. If you swipe left in iPhone to go forward in pics, but in iPhoto it takes you backwards.

I've looked through BTT but can't find anything. I'd assume it wouldn't be that difficult.

Its in BTT. Trackpad settings -> General.

It will invert ALL vertical scrolling though, even on magic mouse.

Can anyone confirm that this works for the Late 2008 macbook Pro 15"?

Yes it does.

I thought it was an evil trick because they seemed to mention every computer made before and after the late 2008 MacBook Pro (even ones without glass trackpads).

It's a mistake in the article.

Quoted for truth.

Yep, works here too. But I'm keeping it on navigate, much easier in Safari.

have both

DO 1 finger drag and 3 finger navigate- have the best of both!

Inertial scrolling works great on Air

Great - with inertial scrolling my MBA feels like new again! Who needs hardware updates? ;)

Installed the update on my early 2008 15" MBP... the inertial scrolling is not / didn't feel as smooth as with the SmartScroll preference app... disabled it and kept using SmartScroll... this $19 app is really amazing anyway.

IMO, nice try Apple... but no cigar. Perhaps this came a bit too late - although I bet most users will appreciate it.

update on the 3 finger drag inertia thing i find, you don't even need to put 3 fingers down initially, just place 2 fingers down, then flick with the 3rd finger brilliant for selecting a large block of text. Someone does need to try this flicking a window to another display, as someone mentioned earlier.

But it's not just one finger drag, it's a one finger click and then another finger drag! (I'm not having any silly tap to click stuff.)

Wait a sec...I just realised that there are more serious problems in my life than a lack of 3-finger drag!

I wish we could get 4 finger navigation (just like 3 finger navigation), so that we could use 3 finger dragging and 4 fingers to go back/forward... I never ever use 4 finger swipes left and right for the app switcher, I don't even use the app switcher when there's Exposé! I wonder why Apple is so reluctant to do anything else with the 4 finger left/right swipe gestures? They're easy to do but not very precise, so navigation would be a great feature...

I didn't read through all the posts, but installing BetterTouchTool will allow you to make this happen. I am using three fingers for dragging and 4 finger left and right swipe for navigation. Just set global gestures for 4 finger left and right swipe with BetterTouchTool and then uncheck the system preference for 4 finger swipe in System Preferences.

Where's the love for the early 2009 15" MBP 2.53???? Its telling me my software is up to date and I'd love to try this stuff out but it doesn't have any downloads for me.

I've a November '08 2.53 MBP and 3 finger swipe's supported dude

Even if it did, not worth it IMO. I use three fingers for navigation (Safari back/forward) far more than I would want to move a window.

+1 There's no way I'd swap safari navigation for 3 finger dragging

I've been using Smart Scroll for 2 years and I still think their implementation of inertial scrolling is much better. They also have an x and y axis inversion toggle for added iPhone authenticity. I loved it so much that I found it a miserable experience to use MBPs belonging to friends and family due to their horrible non-interia MBP trackpads.

Edit: This update has screwed my smart scroll settings. Can someone remind me how to uninstall this update?
