Tap-click, always. It's reliable, responsive, and quiet.

Before this update, I would only use the physical click when dragging was required. But, with 3-finger dragging, I won't need it at all.

Seeing as you are a tap to click'er just like me, can you check if you have the same issue as me?

I described it above, but basically, set 3 finger gesture back to navigate (instead of drag) and see if you can still tap + hold to drag windows and files around, instead of physically clicking the trackpad. I know i used to be able to do it, as I would move files onto my external regularly.

Sorry to quote myself, but can somebody who has installed the update confirm whether their trackpad displays the same behaviour as mine? I don't want my post to get lost since there are so many quick responses to the front page items.

Mine is working flawlessly.

Exactly? WTF?? What's the difference between that and one click drag? Worthless.

Yes, it's pretty much useless.Swipe is so much better and tap and drag is very easy.

PS: Inertial scrolling is great!

According to the article it shouldn't support the three finger drag gesture - well I just installed it and after changing the gesture from navigation to drag it works fine?

Inertial scrolling is great - at last!

I think that it is a mis-print. It says under devices that support both new functions:

MacBook Pro (17-inch, Early 2009)
MacBook Pro (17-inch, Late 2008)

If I remember correctly the 17-inch MacBook Pro wasn't updated in Late 2008, only the 15 inch went unibody (with the 17-inch following in early '09) so I can only assume that it is meant to say MacBook Pro (15-inch, Late 2008). I have one and it is supported too, not that I would want to lose the 3-finger navigation anyway but feels nice that my computer hasn't already become a device that is losing compatibility with new features, that's never a nice day!

tapping, 3 and 1 finger drag

I have the first 15" Unibody, (late or mid 2008 I believe- 2.53 mhz with 512 vram 9600 and 256 vram 9400).

Even though I hoped I would get the 3 finger drag, it disables the one finger drag, and I lose the 3 finger navigate, so those of you that didn't get the 3 finger drag, no great lose. 3 finger navigate is better, and you can one finger drag, WITHOUT clicking, but you do need to tap once on the title bar, then tap again, hold and drag, then tap to set it.

Hope this helps.

Now with this three finger drag gesture... I have 3 finger still set to "swipe to navigate" and I can no longer Tap + hold on a window to drag it. I have to physically click the trackpad in order to drag a window around or a file. I know it is a small detail but I rarely physically click my trackpad, and use taps instead.

Anyone else having this same problem? I DID however, enable the 3 finger drag briefly to try it out, but then switched back to swipe to navigate. I found it odd that the tap + hold didn't work while the 3 finger drag was enabled. Just because you can use 3 finger drag, why not still allow the other method?

So now I have to physically click in order to drag anything?

*edit* to clarify, what I mean by tap + hold is - 1 tap of the trackpack followed immediately by another tap that I do not release, then drag my finger around without lifting it. This worked prior to the update.
Perhaps I should try rebooting...

Hi GabooN,

I've just installed the update and I can still tap and drag. (I haven't changed or been into any of the settings...) Did you have much luck after a reboot? You could try to re-install the update... also do you have any 3rd party trackpad enhancers installed? Disable or uninstall them before applying the update.

Good luck!

Is this what you mean: After enabling 3 finger drag, and disabling it, you can no longer drag without clicking with the trackpad?

If so, I just tried it, and 3 finger dragging disables normal dragging (without having to click). So when you disabled 3 finger dragging, it didn't re-enable 1 finger (normal) dragging. All you need to do, if I'm correct, is go back to System Prefs to Trackpad, and Enable the "Dragging" checkbox. That's it!

Anyone else notice that with 3 finger drag it also has inertia, if you begin the drag with 3 fingers then take one finger off you can flick say a window about the screen with the finger you took off just leave two fingers placed and flick with the other finger, nice. :D

*sigh I've been waiting for it to finish updating for like 20 minutes now. It's been stuck at 99% and "Moving items into place..." for a long time. I don't want to kill it. It seems like a few others are having long installs. Anyone else have this problem?

Good to see them updating the old 2008 Macbooks too (I guess it's all the same touchpad hardware anyways). Downloading now.

Too bad three-finger window dragging only works when the cursor is on the title bar...

Because it's not "Window Dragging", it's "Dragging". It works exactly like any other dragging, you can move icons, draw in Photoshop with a brush, highlight text, scroll by dragging the scroll bar, move sliders to change the volume, etc...

I tried the 3 finger drag and didn't see the point.. So I've reverted to the forward/back function.

Also, be aware the 1 finger dragging feature gets disabled so you have to reenable for it to work.

That is the scenario I was trying to describe :p

I had noticed that it did not re-enable the check box for dragging, so I had clicked it again, but it was still acting as if I had the box disabled. Rebooting the first time didn't solve it, but for whatever reason, I just rebooted again and it is working now. It was as if my macbook wasn't recognizing that the box was checked or something. Hopefully nobody else has this problem.

Working as I had it before now, with the added inertia scrolling :) (not going to be using 3 finger drag).

Ha! that's crazy. I wonder if that was an intended effect?

Woah that's strange... I wonder if it's a bug or not, it doesn't really seem like it's useful and it's pretty tricky to do!

I bought this MBP in early 2008, around March. But it's not saying I have a software update? Does it not roll out all at once? And how could I tell if my Mac is supported or not for sure?

inertial scrolling is cool. never though it much since using magic mouse most of the time. 3 finger dragging is cool but not at the expense of losing three finger navigation gestures. I'll be sticking to double tap dragging and three finger navigation for the time being.
