I'm ready to send the receipt. Do you guys think I should just send it in a regular envelope or go over to the USPS office and do the whole tracking thing?

Also, do you guys think I should open a UPS claim anyway? I know you only have a limited time to do those and if I wait another week until he gets the receipt, and if he comes up with another wild story, I might not be able to open a claim anymore.

Isn't it up to him to claim UPS ?
You did what was needed to hand over your package to UPS and they accepted it and even boxed it in using their special service. What happened during or after transport schould be a discussion between UPS and the buyer.

omg how can an optical drive break in the mail
also why doesnt he go to a proper apple store!
this guys a turd!
feed him to the vultures

I guess I have no idea where the buyer is located, but you have to realize certain areas of the states don't have any Apple Stores. The nearest one to me is a good 8 hour drive from my house. Trust me..when something is broke Apple wise, it doesn't get taken to an Apple Store. its either on the phone to apple, or to the nearest MAC store which is still 3 hours away. :(

Alright, thanks guys.
I'm going to the post office right now and getting this letter signature confirmation.

1. Only serial is needed for service at authorized Apple Repair locations.
2. Tell him to see whether the optical drive works with the disks that came with the computer.

You don't need receipt to obtain service.

You don't need to drive to Apple Store.

AppleCare can be contacted via phone, and if they determine it's problem with the optical drive (i.e. tried #2 and other steps), then they'll send a box to you to send the computer out.

This is a really good thread and a really weird scenario. I have been to Apple stores and Apple Authorized Stores for repairs or problems. Every single time I go, they ask for your name and general information. They have never...ever asked me for my receipt. He must be going to a different store (AASC) and the guy wants to make sure its not stolen. It could be possible that the guy looked up the serial number and saw when it was purchased and then asked the buyer when he bought it. He probably said it was purchased a few days ago and the sales guy probably got suspicious.

I really want to see what this guy does. It sounds really iffy.
