What does cycle the phone mean.. Power down ??

Ok I have Iphone 4 on 4.0.1 and ever since jailbreak my battery life has been HORRENDOUS. My battery would drain to hell while in standby. 40% when I go to sleep, wake up 6 hours later and battery is dead.. Glad I found this thread and already did steps to downgrade MS.

I will report my results in few days and hopefully this solves my issue.

my battery usage sped up after jb'ing 4.0.1, but is now def worse in 4.1.
i cycle'd down the batt last night, but today looks the same.

despite my doubts about it, am gonna downgrade my MS, see if that changes anything.

wish someone could pinpoint what's happening (and find a fix!).

the ONLY thing i miss about pre-jb is battery life (but would not give up ANYTHING i have now for that)...

this was the problem i was having. during powered-on use, theres no real difference of battery performance between MSs, but the standby killed the battery almost as fast as leaving it on.

hope it works for you too.

i downgraded the mobilesubstrate file, but...still seeing faster battery draining (faster than pre-jailbreaking, and, sadly, faster than 4.0.1 jailbroken).

this is with the phone in standby.

aaargh...!

I have heard a lot of talk about downgrading MS from 3228 to 3209 but I have never done it. I've used MS 3228 on 4.0.1 just for Navigate from Maps and nothing else and I have not seen a crazy battery drain. My battery life is still pretty good. Also, I've JB'in using LR and I still have MS 3228 just using it for Navigate From Maps and my battery life seems normal.

Usage - 36 mins (I played Trainyard for about half an hour/Surfed Internet/Twitter)
Standby - 4 hours 54 mins
Battery Percent - 94%

If I downgrade MS 3228 to 3209, will I see a huge boost in batter? Or because I don't really use MS just for Navigate from Maps, will I not see a huge boost like everyone is reporting?

Are people on 4.1 still experiencing battery issues? I'm draining my battery now to get it through a full cycle and to be quite honest, it's difficult. I've been playing video games and leaving TomTom running and checking the internet and stuff like that, using my iPod and its at 27% with 5 hours, 14 minutes usage and 11 hours 39 mins stand by.

I finally upgraded my IP4 to 4.1 over the weekend and used LR to JB.
I noticed an immediate degradation in battery performance. This was more obvious yesterday. I normally use my phone in work for random data access (net, email etc...). When I do this, by the time I go home I normally have plenty of battery left over. Like enough to get through my evening calls and whatever. Since Monday I was going home with less than 20% and needing to charge as soon as I got in.

I downgraded to 3209 last night, rebooted and left on charge all night as usual. So far so good. I've been using the phone bit by bit for an hour now and it is still on 100%, whereas last few days it would have gone down to around 94% by now.

I hear what Saurik is saying that proper testing methods hsould be conducted, but these improvements when downgrading seem to be pretty obvious at moment.

I had a similar experience... The downgrade seems to have solved my 4.1 JB battery issues.

interesting (or??).
seems my phone's been draining faster (in 4.1). went down 5% in less than 2 hours (mostly idle).

so...turned off my custom lockscreen, and, after respringing, my indicator shows 97%. so...??

seems unlikely my meter went UP 2%, so, wondering what's happening.
gonna run without a custom LS for a while, see how things look...

I havent changed to MS 3209 yet, I wanted to see if apps installed from Cydia were doing it. I deleted OpenSSH and SBsettings, and have already found an improvement but will post back some stronger results.

ok, some people report better battery life after downgrading the MS file.

my questions are:

how was this method figured out?
and why would it make a difference?

just curious, did not seem to make a difference for me...
(and i'd LOVE to get my pre-jb battery usage back, or something close to it)...

My usage after deleting openSSH and SBsettings. I from now on will just install openSSH when I need to SSH to my phone, then delete. This is on the supposed problematic MS...

I think the numbers are highly respectable. Push on, notifications off, wifi on half the time. 3G on all the time.

The problem certainly is not OpenSSH......

how to downgrade Mobilesubstrate???

I just recently upgraded my 3GS to 4.1 and my batter life sucks now! I went to bed last night with 80% left on my battery and it was dead in the morning. I have been reading that people have been downgrading the mobilesubstrate and i am wondering how you do that? I need to try something to get my battery life better. I'm on a mac so i don't know if that makes a difference with how you go about doing it. Thanks in advance!

FWIW: My phone always has bluetooth enabled (use it every time I start my car) and runs a lot of tweaks. Battery has been pretty good to me since I used greenpois0n the other day and started from scratch all over again (didn't restore from backup).

I have about 14 gigs of music and 4 gigs of apps on it, not to mention a ton of UI tweaks and cydia apps. Hell, I even tethered for 20 minutes today. I know it says its been plugged in since last charge but that was to sync with my mac and it was only plugged in for about 5 minutes.

How do you downgrade? I am having the same issue you were having... you're help would be greatly appreciated!

this might sound stupid but any time I upgrade or get a new app from Cydia, it keeps re-upgrading mobile substrate...

any way to stop this?

(im pretty sure i missed it in this thread)
