If you can afford a 2018 Lexus you can definitely afford $200 software upgrade lol

Nah, $200 is a scam. Being able to afford it is irrelevant.

With that being said, the CarPlay files were posted on ToyotaNation and owners have been doing the install themselves. Takes about an hour with a USB stick.

VW are the same. The system in my 2016 Golf has the hardware for CarPlay. But to enable it you have to get an “activation key” from VW and have them install it. (Apparently it’s tied to the VIN and has to be authenticated at VW’s end or something.) The charge for the activation key? £250! Given that my car already has Bluetooth for phone calls and music and it already has a nav system, it’s a lot of money for very little extra functionality. I’d rather keep hold of my money thanks.
It’s standard now

Only slightly more than Toyota charges to update the music database. That process involves copying an xml file from a usb drive. Encrypted of course, so it can't be torrented.

Can someone please explain to me how in 2019, this is still not a universal standard thing?

Car Play debuted 5 years ago, and EVERYONE owns iPhones, why WOULDN'T car makers want this in their vehicles?

Still surprised insurance doesn't require something like this.

Manufacturers have to pay a licence fee to Apple or Google (for Android Auto).
[doublepost=1558159522][/doublepost]To those people complaining, take a look at what some other prestige brands charge, while some budget manufacturers don’t. Some like BMW charge an annual fee to use CarPlay!!

Manufacturers have to pay a licence to Apple and Google (if it also has Android Auto).

Why do people expect stuff for free? If you have bought new cars for the past few decades, you have paid ever increasing prices, right. That’s for all the nice new tech and ‘stuff’ they keep adding on.

Yes, but what is the market share of iPhones among Europeans that own newer autos? Much higher.

Of course Android OS has a much higher market share... how manufacturers produce Android devices that use Android OS. Than compare that to how many manufacturers produce iOS compatible products. I’ll help you out with the last one - it’s one.

You could also look at the brands that don’t allow Android OS in their products and research into why.

I don't own an iPhone and never plan on buying a restricted iOS gadget. I use Android. And guess what: I also live in Germany where the majority of people use Android devices.

Literally billions of people couldn't care less about proprietary Apple technologies being supported by their cars - or not.

Since this is a feature upgrade, and since you most likely cannot offer Car Play support without paying Apple a tax or license fee, it's perfectly fine if they charge money for the upgrade.

It should be but it’s possible they have some backend licensing fees that they’re wanting to cover. I think it’s fair.

BMW charges $300 PER YEAR to use CarPlay.

Lexus Corporate is suggesting the dealer should charge $199 msrp. The actual software is free to the dealer from Lexus. The only reason I can see for them to charge is to cover the hour of labor it takes to install.

It’s the dealer deciding to charge, not Lexus. There is no license fee from Apple to the dealer.

Where are people getting that manufacturers have to pay Apple a licensing fee to use CarPlay? That’s not true at all and Apple allows manufacturers to use it for free. It’s not intended to be a revenue stream for Apple. It’s intended to increase the utility and appeal of iPhones.

Anyone who buys a Toyota & pays $10,000 extra for some increased hp & a wooden steering wheel (Lexus) should have to fork over $200 for a software update (says Toyota/Lexus)...
Tesla may not have car play but it does have a very good UI. Also, free over the air software updates.
If anyone is considering a Lexus LC or LS, should seriously consider a Model S

If you don't like to pay for a SOFTWARE upgrade, demand car infotainment standards.

Kia / Hyundai / Genesis upgraded EVERY eligible / backwards compatible car to CarPlay and AA for free. FREE!!! And this was over two years ago! I mean, FFS Toyota, what kind of BS scam is this??

Hence why so many are leased.

If you're buying a modern German luxury car with all it's insane electronics, you're just asking to be deprived of your money. Leasing them is the only intelligent way to go. Plus, one leases depreciating assets, one buys appreciating assets.

My small/old car stereo has an "Aux In" plug for running a cord from my phone headphone jack. I can listen to music or have my Map navigator voice come thru the car speakers. Don't need or want a huge display in the center of my dashboard. Just more intrusive tech bloat.

There was probably some sort of CarPlay license you have to purchase and nothing about Apple is cheap, plus the time/labor to do the upgrade.

There is no license fee for the manufacturers to have CarPlay.

Car companies need to pay apple (and google) for the rights for these features and they don't want tolol. That is likely the beginning and end of it.

As an aside, $199 upgrade is completely gouging the consumer here. You can get an entire aftermarket carplay head unit for under $300 these days.

What's your source for a licensing fee? Unless it is something new, car companies don't pay a licensing fee to have CarPlay. As a matter of fact, getting CarPlay in cars is so important to Apple that they spend money working with the car manufacturers to help them with integrating CarPlay.

The lack of scrubbing (in Apple Music, Spotify you can tap to seek) is the sole reason I don't use CarPlay. That and the fact that I don't like the fact that it mirrors my phone going home and opening apps. I know I shouldn't be using my phone in the car so please spare me.

Should be free.
My 2016 Hyundai Tucson did not come with apple cap play. When people complained, Hyundai had us download the info on and plug it into the USB on on the car. No Charge. Today every Hyundai has both Apple and Android

I have driving my 2016 Toyota Corrola without Carplay for three years in the row now. And I have driving old Malibu for 6 years before that. I don't have problem with that.

I rather want car have safety features, Carplay is nice feature but not necessary features. I will continue buy Toyota even if Toyota never offers Carplay. Toyota quality and reliability is so good, even lack of Carplay or Android auto is fine for me. Even if Hyundai or GM offers Carplay while Toyota doesn't, I would still buy Toyota.

Toyota will forever be stuck with the “if it ain’t broke don’t fix it” mentality, and quite frankly I don’t know why people tolerate it. Corollas have got to be one of the most boring cars on the market, and the fact it took them as long as they did to add CarPlay shows they’re scared to try new things. The Corolla hatchback is a breath of fresh air, which offers technology such as direct injection and CarPlay. But it just doesn’t make sense to say they’re the most reliable and highest quality in the business when they’re still dishing out 2010 tech.
