Those are good points. Probably a good idea to keep iMovie around. I would be surprised if Garageband stays around though. It's a build of Logic with limited features, and with the price so low now, I just think it would be better to concentrate resources on the main product.

Never used Garageband, other than opening it up, looking around, then closing it, but iMovie is useful. FCP is waaayyy too much for a video amateur like me.

I hope they keep it around!

Will this hurt Apple? Apple is not the only company to offer subscriptions for productivity as creative apps.

Microsoft has Microsoft 365 and Adobe has Creative Cloud, so I wonder how many people will subscribe to Apple’s offerings?
There’s something inscrutable about the bundle: I am not a creator except on a very very occasional basis, so I have no need for the video/audio parts of it. I am more interested in iWork. Why the heck would I pay for the rest of the bundle at all? It makes no sense at all. It’s like they slapped the whole thing together without any thought given to what the customer might actually want.

How many Apple users hate subscriptions?!

We pay for things like Final Cut Pro and Motion so we don't have to pay a fortune like most do with Adobe.

Does this mean we have to be connected to the internet just to use FCP?

Apple is definitely making a huge mistake!

Apple isn't THINKING DIFFERENT, they are thinking the same as all the other software companies.

Listen to your customer base!

For professional seeking more features as Final Cut Pro heavily suffer from lack of features, it's a good news only if they keep updating their software like others.

You don't have to. From the Apple site

"Free versions of Keynote, Pages, Numbers, and Freeform continue to be available and are included with every new iPhone, Mac, and iPad."

A one-time purchase will still be available, but access to some of the premium content is available only to Apple Creator Studio subscribers. If you already own Final Cut Pro, it will continue to be updated.

This one line makes almost zero sense and/or may be the most confusing line Apple has ever put out there. So if you take it as face value you would assume it means anyone who paid for a one-time subscription before this Jan 28 launch date will get the same features as those who subscribe, but those who purchase the one time after Jan. 28 will not get the same features. But that wouldn't even be possible. Unless everything will become an in-app purchase and those of us who purchased before Jan. 28 are tiered as Legacy users or something more dumb.

In reality I expect all of us who purchased the apps in the past to get shafted somehow and be forced onto the subscription to get new features. Apple is in the game to make money. The fact they are facing this subscription for the iPad versions alone is terrible. (no way to get the iPad apps without the subscription from what I understand).

Assume that I might want the subscription-only features, which is the only possible way that what I said makes any sense.

Struggling to learn Resolve now. I left LumaFusion because my paid-for LumaFusion update on Sequoia didn't announce that, once updated, the software would only work on 26 Tahoe. At that time, they had no block preventing updates on Sequoia. I have no intentions of going to 26.

Contacted Luma Touch, all they could say was 'sorry'. No offer to send me a working dmg, no non-26 version of LumaFusion on the app store. Only a 'sorry'.
LumaFusion is an iPad app, it can only be installed on Apple Silicon Macs thru the App Store because only those machines support iPad apps on Mac. LumaTouch can not send a dmg file because one would NOT exist. iPad's don't use DMG's. Being an iPad app, it can only be installed from the Mac App Store on your Mac.

I won't be subscribing. I am assuming that iMovie will still be updated and free? I just use Pages and Numbers basic features so I should be fine there as well.

Well, I don't know, I'm using those apps only to open files that I receive from my clients, I have practically zero experience in creating something from scratch or heavy editing files.

Did you have free access to premium content prior to this day (I'm excluding AI because it's fairly new stuff)?

The new regime doesn’t go into effect until later this month but until then we have/had access to all features of iWork apps.

By bundling the ‘pro’ stuff like Final Cut with Freeform and basic office apps, they’re going to screw the consumer.

The updates damn well better be compelling, and they really should bundle this with apple one.

You will own nothing and be happy.

The only app I use on the regular is Pages but I'll probably be able to live without updates.

For the typical iWork user (school/office/home), the free version might continue to be sufficient with occasional modest feature updates and AI writing tools and proofreading. The article mentions premium photos and graphics, but not sure that is something many iWork users need or want. Perhaps the subscription will mostly benefit Pro creative users.

I am so absolutely sure everyone will be ok with this. Especially folks like me who already paid for some of these apps. As a wise 16th century philosopher once said. "if you cannot innovate anymore, charge a subscription price"
