What’s with everything needing a monthly subscription? It’s getting out of hand.
The only way to push back on it, is by not subscribing but for people who use FCP, that's easier said then done. They'll largely be forced into the sub and apple knows that. Pixelmator Pro users have been waiting years for new features and they also may be in a similar situation - being forced to subscribe.

I bought pixelmator pro, but I'm a light user, just using it for hobby type stuff - I'm not going to be subscribing

LibreOffice or OnlyOffice? I have no experience with latter but LO is robust, feature-rich and free.

Affinity bundle is also free and with more than solid features (unless you heavily deal with corporate and have to operate with industry-standard file formats that require Adobe software).
Yeah I use Affinity already along with Photomator. As well as MS Office. At least on the iPhone and iPad, I think Apple's apps look and work a lot better.

But you’re right, there's free alternatives that still get regular updates. I could take a day or two to get used to a new interface.

Which features are limited compared to previous free versions?
None. People are losing their **** here over nothing, acting as if Apple are killing the existing versions of the apps included in the suite when in reality if you already own FCP, Motion etc. they keep working just as they always have and Keynote, Pages and Numbers will continue to come free with every Mac, iPad and iPhone. If you don't already own them and don't want to subscribe you can still buy stand-alone perpetual-licence versions of FCP etc. on Mac, which will continue to get updates and new features just not some of the "premium" AI ones and the "premium content", which no-one currently uses anyway because they don't exist yet. Logic and MainStage will be exactly the same whether you subscribe or buy perpetual licences: if you need the "premium" features / content with the other apps you can subscribe (at a much lower rate than getting the equivalent apps from Adobe, especially if you're a student or teacher) and your subscription can be shared with Family Sharing (although not if you're using the educational discount). But why let a few facts get in the way of having a massive rant online?

p.s. my main question about this is Photomator: why's that not part of the suite as a Lightroom equivalent?

Yeah, I don't get it. I've read comments, and made sure to read the article on the Apple site thoroughly. It's only several paragraphs long, but it seems that people today definitely have attention span of a goldfish, and do not read beyond the headlines. It's literally the same as it was yesterday regarding their software, plus another tier for those who don't have money to pay upfront and/or are in need for additional content.

Why? If you’re a creator you already have your tools and flows. Maybe you’re interested in the new features, and pay for them.

Or you’re not a creator and nothing changes for you.
I am and have been I still have My software and machines from 2002 and onwards but now No longer supporting people unless they pay a subscription and get less of a product with a one time license (freemium for some) so when they increase the subscription again and again are you ok with that? not as if there going to charge people more for the hardware in the future with RAM CPU GPU Memory and chip fabrication
You can pay subscription I am out and F that Ai bs if you support that stuff you are not a real creative

I won't be subscribing. I am assuming that iMovie will still be updated and free? I just use Pages and Numbers basic features so I should be fine there as well.
That's another question, because the iMovie page HAS NOT been updated and still mentions the dead Clips app. And the last update was over 1 year ago. Starting to think Apple has no plans for the app since it hasn't even been mentioned.

And if you try to change from in to en, us or en-us for the US version, it becomes page not found.

Subscriptions after the premium prices we pay for hardware? No thank you. This just determined that I am not going to upgrade my home MacBook any time soon. Also, time to investigate open source office software.

Where do unsubscrbe from everything Cook? 😉

I mean only him, I have nohing against Apple in general!
Can't wait for him to resign.

My next real purchase is a new phone but Apple no longer do small form phones and I have no interest in the Fold. So if I end up going Android which I NEVER thought I would then it will be a very easy move away from Apple after that.
Are there top spec Android phones available in a small (iPhone mini-esque) size? I thought they were all huge as well.

Never been a fan of Renting software. Either at home or in Business. Adobe and Microsoft both did this with their offerings and while they took an initial hit to sales, they saw massive profits after the change in the long run.

So lets be perfectly frank. This isn't about "Making our products flexible and giving the user choice while innovating tomorrows applications". This is about profit 100% and Apple taking a software suite that was a money sink they used to use to leverage Mac Sales into a "Powerful Suite of AI centric tools" no one asked for.

Apple.. I love ya but your making me Alt-Tab to my PC more often with this crap. At least there I can play games while I cry myself to sleep at night.

Maybe read the article / the Apple News story, because you'll still get Keynote, Pages and Numbers free.

Not a big fan of reading either apparently (free or perpetual licence versions of all these apps are still available).

Exactly. I read now all the articles and I really don't see what the fuss is all about. I think we should calm down a bit, breathe, and use the software as we did, since nothing changes really.

PS. I really love Numbers, all my family budgets, economies predictions and mortgage calculations are on them. I don't need an AI to do SUM on a column. But if somebody needs that, by all means, pay 129 a year for it.
I’m with you on both your points. Some people make it sound that by not subscribing the iWork apps will be useless when they will still give all the functionality they currently have.

As for the cost of other the other apps, the option of subscription or purchase seems very reasonable. I will be buying Photomator and at its cost, I think it’s a bargain. This could be because I’ve been around a while and recall what any software cost going back to the late 1980s. I see what is available now and marvel at the value.

Well, it had to happen eventually…

:(

I do understand some services cost money, but Keynote, Pages, Numbers?… These were the Apple’s flagship apps coming by default….
They remain free. It sounds like it is the remotely provided AI features that will be missing. As that requires a lot of expensive server time to run, I don't think that is really unfair that those additional features are locked up in either a subscription or pay to use - and people prefer a flat-rate subscription to paying per transaction, even if they rarely come close to what the flat-rate would cost...

I think this is either poorly worded by Apple, or the press is deliberately making clickbait headlines out of it.

As far as I understand it, having read a few articles, if you use Keynote, Pages, Numbers etc. nothing will change, they will still work as before and they will still get updated with new (non-AI) features. Likewise, if you bought and use FinalCut Pro, nothing will change, it will work as before and get updated as before, but if you want to use the new AI features, which require Apple's backend AI servers, you will need to pay for those features with a subscription.

If that is really what it amounts to and not the clickbaiting that has been going around, I think that is fair enough. If, on the other hand, I misunderstand what Apple said and they stop development of the free or standalone versions and they are frozen in time and you need a subscription to get the updates, that is wrong.

@turbineseaplane would you please elaborate which part of this post is wrong?

Really bad situation regarding Pixelmator Pro. Why the hell are people forced to use the entire Creator Studio bundle just to get full access to only one app they use? Pixelmator Pro has little to do with video editing or vice versa. I really hate this.
If you don't need the additional AI slop, just buy PP as before...
