I should have pursued software engineering and it wasn’t for a lack of trying. Just couldn’t get it. Anyway, I’m happy where I’m at, not starving, have a roof over my head, can take care of those close to me and still afford tech stuff when I need it and my bank account looks really healthy not to mention my credit score.
I hear being a designer who knows how to make things really thin is still a good career choice. :p

Here's the insidious thing about these kinds of "bonuses:"

They take four years to vest. In that time, Apple can (and 100% will) dump any/all of those devs before those stock options are available, then work hard to attract younger engineers (who will accept smaller salaries than their predecessors for the boasting rights of working for the fruit) - and the stock options offered this year to all the engineers they 86 will become worthless, because they're contingent upon still being employed by Apple.

Every SV company does this: they dangle enticing fortunes in front of the grunts, with no intention of actually ever paying out. It looks festive and generous in the PR release, but in 3 and a half years, after everybody's forgotten about this, Apple will cut the cord on every single last one of them, and welch on the bonus stocks.

Maybe I’m too Dutch for this, but if Apple were to pay me 100K a year and Meta offered me 200K I wouldn’t move. I just don’t want to work for an ****** company. I’ve done that before, but that didn’t improve my life other than a bigger paycheck.

Me and my wife together fetch about $80K a year and we make a good living out of it, even though our total tax rate is above 50%. Houses aren’t as expensive as in the Bay Area, but I think other costs are mostly on par.

Aren't there rumors Facebook is paying up to $500k for senior engineers these days? A $180k bonus doesn't seem that much

From what I get reading tweets from employees, Apple is way behind the salaries other FAANGs are paying, and mostly relies on the prestige to attract junior engineers
You don't think a bonus of 36% of your salary is much? What type of bonus package do you get? I can tell Google and Facebook very rarely offer such and generally only to executives.

I understand wanting more money. But you are really selling your soul to go work at Facebook. I would rather work at Apple making stuff than going to Facebook to find creative ways to rip data from people.

Key hardware engineers in Silicon Valley can earn more than 100% of their salary in bonuses and stock (and stock-like) grants. In fact, in some cases more than 300% above their salary. Not sure if the employees we are talking about here are hardware or software engineers.

Agreed -- assuming things are close

If the pay disparity gets extreme, it can be nearly impossible to say no

It's a pretty simple concept - supply and demand.

Congrats to those who received bonuses and I hope those that missed out can get there next time if it's important enough to them.

I'm thinking that all the engineers that didn't get the bonuses now know where they stand at Apple, and are already updating their resumes.
Well those that aren’t getting are obviously dispensable and can be replaced easily in their opinion.

What if they offered you 400k (or more)?

Everyone has a number

They could add 2 zeros behind it and I still wouldn’t do it. For me it’s not about making money. A good paycheck is important, but I’ve reached a level where my life won’t improve much with a bigger paycheck. I want to create products that push people or companies forward. I need to strongly believe in the company’s vision I’m working for. That’s 100x more important than a bigger paycheck.

”Living the American dream“ has become ”grab as much as you can, while you can”. The rest of the world thinks different though, money definitely isn’t as important around the world.

I admire your moral standards, but I dare say you are likely in an extreme minority that wouldn't take the offer (particularly with 2 more zeros behind it).

At some point this becomes life changing and potentially generational wealth. I don't blame folks who pursue that.

btw - I mostly agree with you -- I'm more just making an observation about reality.

I have something similar (not as much $) with Apple/Google’s main competitor. Just the 4 year wait is a negative.

That wasn't my or co-workers experience at a few SV companies over the years.

Perhaps you can provide a citation from a credible source to back up your assertions?
