I ordered mine on January 20th, 2014 and is listed as "Available to ship: March"

March of what year is still yet to be determined.

I ordered the baseline model as well, I am a tad surprised that even the baseline models take this long to ship.

why are you taking crap from apple?

----------

I'm not dealing with Apple directly but with the university bookstore. So I can't even yell at Apple sales reps (I admit I do want to :)). But I'm also suspicious of the late April estimate that the bookstore is giving me. nobody else on the forums seems to be delayed quite so much.

Uniquely bad design? Opinion, not fact.

FACT:

Limited GPU design with already ancient cards. No expandable storage except for overly expensive TB. Pathetic PSU. Poor thermal design that forces the computer to massively slow down.

A huge number of people have said that they would pay more for American made products. Apparently, while they may not cost that much more, they take a lot longer to make. Or at least to ramp up production.

Just goes to show you that maybe there is more to building things in China than access to cheap workers.

Who knows if the Mac Pro is getting delayed by assembly in the US.

Or if it is a supply issue with all those Intel Xeon processors or AMD video cards.

Don't be so quick to blame the American worker...

You shouldn't buy one... I, however, am really looking forward to mine.

Such a catastrophic failure. Here's a tip. If you're not ready to ship to meet demand...DELAY ANNOUNCING IT!

how is it possible?

I was a little surprised. I ordered a stock 4-core, so I went to add mine to the list... and there were only 2 others.

Mine is a developer box, I just wanted something similar to a top-spec'd iMac but without a monitor. I imagine that model is insufficient for most serious video editors or 3D folks.

The last design of Mac Pro

I won't deny that oMP design was great...and I do have oMP...still this new one is smaller...more convenient...i guess.

:p

Yeah...late april..they piss me off. do they sell nMP at university?

Rant/ Not gonna lie, pretty pissed off right now. Ordered Jan. 1 and received zero information from Apple until saw this article and decided to call them. It's already been 8 weeks and now they've delayed it another week or two. It wouldn't be a problem if I didn't have projects with actual DEADLINES. When I told the CSR of how disappointed with Apple I was, he basically said "meh". Serious BS here Apple. What happened to under promise over deliver? I will seriously reconsider next time I decide to drop 9 grand on a computer... /end rant

is it that they are very difficult to make or is the demand so high? or both?

Probably a number of factors, but I would think mostly it comes down to the fact that this will have a lot lower demand in the future.

Apple will have built infrastructure to handle the long term and at the moment that can't cope with the initial demand which is currently exceptional due to the the wait for a new Mac Pro, change in design and Apple actually marketing the thing. I wouldn't be surprised if 50% of the year's volume has been ordered in the first two months. There aren't any real alternatives for most customers, so Apple can handle this by waiting it out. Maybe they are growing production a bit, but it may not be easy to ramp it up quickly.

I'm with you Apple-teer.

Keep on deluding yourself on that. No it is about paying folks less, circumventing local labor laws (even Chinese ones) and getting bigger, fatter, middle-upper management bonus checks.

With your views on capitalism and business, maybe you belong in a socialist country. Unless that is, you are already in one.

I'm not sure about that.

Enjoy your trash can. Emphasis on the trash.

Source for that claim?

Go to the Mac Pro forum and look at any tests where the computer has to run at full throttle for any length of time. It's a poor design which can't handle the heat, which is, I'm sure, partly why Apple put such a piddly 450W PSU in it.

you would assume.

My point of reference comes from my fellow engineers that work in our company and other large scale enterprises. We are all both reliant on our Mac Pros, and enthusiastic long time Apple customers. Long before the company focused on it's current role as a mass market retailer of consumer facing entertainment devices.

Due to Apples shift and current addiction to massive profits, only iOS truly seems to matter. We were expecting the Mac Pro to go the way of the DODO bird, yet it's my guess ego prevented that from happening.

Due to the long standing narcissistic culture within the Cupertino campus, Apple felt compelled to create this Art inspired design. Determined to show the world they still valued their insatiable desire to boast they're the best.

Huh? Educate myself more? If you know more than I, please enlighten me. Otherwise, you post less.

Can't argue with the facts I've posted. Go spend three grand on an already obsolete inferior computer, however. Enjoy. ;)

I ordered a MP (6 core , 1 TB) in the second week of January through the university bookstore so that it could be billed directly my department. I don't have direct access to the order myself but I've been checking with the bookstore and the shipping date keeps slipping. It was February for a while, then end of February or early March and today I was told end of April! This is a complete horse crap. I wonder if they are BSing me at the bookstore or if this is really happening to others too. 4 months to ship a computer is completely ridiculous.

We're beginning to see why Apple uses China instead of the USA. China will work their people around the clock and on weekends to meet delivery schedules. The USA has every 'human rights' issue working to prevent delivery to customers when wanted. If you care about 'human rights' issues, stop complaining about delivery. Keep complaining if you don't care about human rights issues.

how would that determine if it's the demand rather than supply...?
I really wish it is demand.

Totally agree. And if you aren't gonna keep your promises, you should do something for your customers who you've pissed off.

Maybe Apple was finally influenced by all the experts on the MacRumors forums and accepted their wisdom that the new Mac Pro was going to be a flop, and they adjusted their production lines accordingly.

Actually, that was part of my point. That there are a lot of factors other than the workers that make the difference.

You are right that we don't know exactly why, but this delay is more extreme than seen on say the iMacs or the new iPhone models.

Chinese factories have experience getting product out the door and still can see delays in the face of staggering demand.

I don't know how much pent up demand there was for this, so I can't say if it was an underestimation of demand, or some other screw up, but it is a massive failure.

And I fully support bringing production back to the US. I just think when people have to put their money where their mouths are (or in this case time where their mouths are) they aren't as supportive of moving jobs back here as they are when it is only hypothetical.
