Yesterday, we noted that the first online iPad 2 orders in the U.S. had begun arriving on Monday, led by shipments from AT&T. By yesterday afternoon, the first trickle of orders made through Apple began coming through, and the pace seems to be quickening today with a number of readers reporting (1, 2, 3, 4, 5) that their orders have either already arrived today or are listed as being out for delivery through FedEx.

Not all customers in the initial wave are happy, however, as many of them are still waiting for their orders to ship more than five days after placing orders within minutes of the Apple online store opening for iPad 2 sales. MacRumors forum members are tracking shipments updates (or lack thereof) in a thread in our iPad forum.

Meanwhile, a new report from AppleInsider confirms rumblings we've been hearing that Apple retail stores have adjusted their inventory management practices with the iPad 2, choosing to hold new shipments received during the business day until the following day. The change reduces stress on Apple's employees and systems that had previously rushed to get high-demand items onto the sales floor as soon as possible after arrival. With the new process, customers may have a better chance to plan for availability by knowing to arrive in time for store opening and even allowing some stores to open early to distribute their iPad 2 supplies and disperse lines before the regular flow of non-iPad customers arrive each day.

In addition, the report notes that Apple has changed its process for issuing web order numbers, moving from a sequential system to a randomized one. The sequential ordering system had been used in the past to estimate the early sales rate for the first-generation iPad last year.

Strong sales aside, Apple really screwed up this launch.

Mine's on the truck set to deliver any time today now. I also placed my order online right after they started accepting them. A bit disappointed that I could have possibly waited and grabbed one at a local Apple retail store after the initial rush, but that disappoint will likely soon be overshadowed by a certain imminent package. ;)

No strong sales, NOT aside. Great!

A little more info please in which way they screwed up?

Your inside info please!

just got mine today. Fed Ex guy banged so hard on my door I realized I had overslept to the time of 1:45PM.

Imagine there was a global launch of the iPad last Friday, it would of been soo hectic. But as it is, the US get the light bleeding bad batches first.

So unintentionally, apple are actually favouring europeans.

Mine is on truck for delivery. Says it will deliver by tomorrow, but should probably show up today :D

Hmm...I'm not sure how apple "screwed up" (other than making it an evolution vs. Revolution). People are just buying alot of iPad 2s. Uhhh, I'm sure (financially) they're considering this a successful launch. That's my "insider information"

iPad 2 arrived but w/o cover

I confirm that iPad's ordered from the Apple Store are being delivered. I ordered mine a 4:09 EST on 11 March and it was delivered this morning. What is weird is that the cover was shipped before the iPad and it's stuck in Hong Kong with an expected delivery date of 22 March. What's up with that?

Delivery today

Mine shows "On Fedex vehicle for delivery" but the estimated delivery date is not until tomorrow by 4:30pm. Will I get mine today?
It's a business address in a medium-sized city.

Where do you live? I ordered the same time you did. I'm in NYC with an expected delivery date of tomorrow.

Mine is on truck for delivery also. Gilbert, AZ. Ordered a non-engraved white 16GB wifi only via Apple's site about 5 minutes before the "official" time.
