I just called the Apple shop in Regent Street, and they said I cannot upgrade my iPhone there, I have to go to O2. I am on pay monthly with O2, contract expired. So we seem to have different stories here, I wish I knew what to believe!

I also thought I would have to go to an O2 store, but I have been told both in-store and on the phone that they CAN upgrade me in the Bullring AppleStore next Friday. (Before phoning I sent them an email to ask about this but they said I should phone them, so I have nothing in writing!)

I didn't upgrade to 3G last summer.WHat was the story then? I seem to remember that Apple did do upgrades in-store? (Did they not have to run the Windows based O2 contract software via Bootcamp or something, or did I dream all that?)

I will keep an this forum and ask them again before heading in there next Friday. If they can't upgrade me there at 8am I can head down to the Bullring O2 store and upgrade there at 9:02!

I just emailed customer services at contactus.uk@euro.apple.com and asked in detail. Is this the address you emailed?

I'll certainly post the reply here as soon as I get it.

I thought the 3G was O2 only last year. I can understand why, we need to sign an O2 contract and pay a reduced price. And that money belongs to O2, not Apple. Not insurmountable problems, but fair enough if they don't want to deal with it.

But I'd really, really rather deal with Apple...

Hey,

having talked to my O2 store and them not even knowing if they get any yet I have decided to get to regents street Apple store!

what time do you guys think I should get there? 7am so I wait 1 hour? I think I wear a fake beard or something as I think its really embarrassing to be in the queue ! Having looked at some videos of the 3g launch in regents street it looked liked there where only about 30 people anyway :)

No, I emailed the store direct: bullring@apple.com. I'm looking forward to what you hear back from contactus.uk@euro.apple.com!

I would also very much rather deal with Apple.

Surely it is in O2's interest (not Apple's) if I upgrade in an AppleStore? I pay the store (Apple) LESS than if i got a pay-as-you-go phone, but then I pay O2 my monthly subscription (£35 x 18 = £630) (which subsidizes the phone)? (I'm sure that Apple then get some of my subscription back from O2, so it is probably just the same in the end?)

I'm sure it's just paperwork in the end. Automated, virtual paperwork at that!

I have an automated reply that promises a personalised reply within 2 business days. I will let you know here!

Ok, I have had a look back to the forum last July and found this.

Apple will be selling iPhone 3Gs in their stores, but please note that existing O2 customers can only upgrade in an O2 or CPW store.

So I guess last time customers could start NEW 3G O2 contracts in AppleStores, but existing first gen customers had to go to an O2 or CPW store.

Just because AppleStore upgrades didn't happen last time doesn't mean they won't this time, but I'm again doubting what I have been told by the Bullring store!

Hopefully we will know for sure by Thursday evening!

Well that was worth waiting for... not!!
Apple replied to my message with a list of contact numbers I should call for info. All were O2 and Carphone Warehouse. So I' still don't know if you can do this upgrade in an Apple shop. Sorry.

I can't go till the evening anyway, so I guess I go to Apple first, then to O2 if need be. I'll go to CPW when Hell freezes over.

Maybe I'll learn more on the forums during the day.

Secondly, tethering.

O2 do not have any technology to know whether you are tethering or not. How they will know is purely by high data usage. If your data usage appears high, they will get in touch with you to say it is, and that they assume this is likely to be as a result of tethering without the bolt on. You will be sent two more messages if you do not stop, and after the third, they will begin to charge you for every MB used. It seems the bolt on is merely a marker on your account to say that you are allowed to use as much data as you want. I guess unlimited doesn't mean unlimited as per usual!

This is very interesting indeed.
Given that it is trivially easy to activate tethering yourself. (see other threads for info)

If this is true, O2 would be powerless to prevent casual tethering.

Interesting that they won't put anything in writing - when I sent an email to the store they asked me to phone.

The answer might be in another thread - it was suggested the detail about how AppleStores will handle O2 upgrades has yet to be sorted...

I'm still planning to head in to an AppleStore for 8am Friday. I will post on here how I get on - hopefully at 8:15am saying my upgrade went very smoothly, and that the 3G S is fantastic by the way

Be good if you could let us know, would help quite a few of us out I should think!

That would certainly explain the lack of info!

Well, I look forward to your post, sounds like you're going to be the best source of info for me before I go. Naturally, and not entirely selfishly ;), I wish you luck and I hope you enjoy your new phone.

Remember to wear a dodgy knitted sweater and an anorak, and make sure you're staring at either a laptop or an iPhone at all times, preferably logged on to Twitter :D

Upgrades in Apple Stores.

Just contacted my local store where I have a personal shop booked for 10am Friday.
If you are due an upgrade on o2 you can do this in an Apple store.

If you want an early upgrade they cannot do this in an Apple store.

They will have plenty of stock of all models both contract and payg.

All you need for the upgrade is a debit or credit card and 1 other form of id, utility bill, bank statement etc.
Hope this helps..:):)

This is exactly what I was told by the Birmingham Bullring AppleStore, so growing evidence that upgrade-eligible owners CAN upgrade to the 3GS on Friday.

Sweet, thanks for the info.

Right, just got back from local Apple shop and they agree with londonmystery, they can upgrade if your contract period is finished. So now we seem agreed, roll on Friday!:D

what's the best O2 shop in london to get a phone early on Friday? Most of the shops seem to open at 10am, or do they open early for the launch?

The two O2 stores near me are both opening at 9:02. I think this is O2's official 3G S launch time, one hour and two minutes behind Apple.

Depends where in London you are. I am going to Bluewater Apple store. If they ran out there are also 2 o2 stores and 2 CPW stores in the same centre. So would be a ver good chance you'd get 1.:):)

Just spoke to O2 about my currrent silver priority status. I thought it should be gold as i am the £45 a month contract and have £9.99 home broadband. But apparently the home broadband only counts if you are on a O2 Priority List Portfolio tariff, what a pile of crap. I am paying them at least £55 a month and an still stuck on silver.

That on top of them wanting £15 a month to tether my phone (which i will not be paying) is starting to make me go off O2!!
