The Surface Pro 8 I have has been brilliant so far. No issues, no throttling like the older ones. The new Surface Laptop Studio has also been getting good reviews from users.
I’ve had a Surface Pro 2 for nearly 10 years and it’s still slaying and humming right along on Windows 11. Only issues have been with charger, which Microsoft recalled and replaced years ago, and the Type Cover which is beginning to fray and come apart a bit around the edges (due to carelessly packing it in a suitcase).

Apple should look toward Microsoft’s more recent industrial design to learn tank-like construction.

This is exactly my experience as well with a blue iPad Air 5. I’ve used it every day since it arrived and can’t replicate any creaking but did see a vertical line of distortion points if I press hard on it, which I normally never do to my devices.
Blue iPad Air 5 here as well and while the back does flex a bit I don’t have any creaking.

Quality means nothing to Tim Cook’s apple, he just wants to reuse as much material and blueprints as possible.

Not excusing poor build quality here, but I have to bemoan the fact that now we’re probably going to have to endure, yet again, someone coming up with some “clever” whatever-gate, and the resultant flood of trolls using the term at every possible opportunity for the next few weeks. Apple, please step up your build quality and QA, if only for making it such that none of us have to hear another “-gate” again…please…
This isn’t new, it’s the same poor quality bendgate since the iphone 6

Is the issue when pressure is applied to only a certain area when holding? Would the flex/creak be noticed in a case?

(cue the apple should give everyone a free case now) lol

Wanted to say the same thing. These reviewers won’t say anything negative since they want to keep getting freebies.
Freebies? If there is any holding back of criticism it’s because they want to keep getting early access to new releases so they can publish early since their businesses thrive on views. The earlier they publish the better. It has absolutely nothing to do with getting a free $500 device (they probably have to send their review units back, anyway).

Product cost cutting is very normal in a high inflationary economy. Either they have to cut cost from the product or increase the price. The iPad Air 5 is starting at the same price that the iPad Air 4 did $599. It would appear that Apple removed a small amount of aluminum to save money and increase margin so they did not have to raise the price. For example saving $1.00 in aluminum on each iPad doesn’t seem like much, but if you’re producing millions of them that’s a huge savings. I don’t blame Apple for cheapening up their devices a little bit if they can keep prices down in a high inflation economy. If they started raising prices people would be complaining even more.

All companies are doing it. I know of an automaker that switched from hood struts to keep the hood open to a prop rod on one of there models. That’s just one example, but they are all over. Go back in time to the late 70’s early 80’s under high inflation and you’ll see everything got built “cheaper” at that point.

“Premium” no more.
The chip is the only special thing in Apple now, the displays in most Apple devices (most, no all, ok?), are very good for 2018, now they are “ok”, bit expensive for what they are.
Someone wants his “cost savings” super bonus at Apple.

So you’re saying if Apple hadn’t increased the price of the new SE to $429 it might have the same shoddy, questionable, CREAK-y build quality as its fraternal iPad twin? Seems strange for the more “budget” product.

The new model is heavier than the last one according to others posting in this topic. Anybody got any citations on these claims?

It’s possible. An inflationary economy brings on the choice of building cost saving into the product or increasing the price. Something has to give because Apple needs to maintain a certain profit margin on each line. Generally the larger the product like an automobile the easier it is to cut small things “de-content” then a small item like a phone or a tablet, but it can be done. If Apple can hold the line on price and make the case a little thinner the idea is most customers won’t notice. Now if they make no changes and raise the price that will stand out more to the customer. They hire people and pay them big bucks to try and get this quality vs cost ratio right. The informal name for those people are bean counters.

Except apple has obnoxiously high profit margins. So it’s between making an inferior product and pissing off some customers or making less profit (I’ll remind you they’d still make PROFIT) and pissing off shareholders. We all know where Tim’s heart is at. He’s a bean counter. He cares about customers but he cares WAY MORE about Wall Street.

Well, I’m not endorsing that Apple certainly has done what is alleged but Apple puts so little effort into the SE (the refined iPhone 6 design) that it is believable that they only considered raising the price of the iPhone SE.

Its made in China, what did you expect /s

Well, we all know that Apple costs more because its a premium product. Thank you all beta testers, will be keeping my Air 4.

I think people need to reset what they find "shocking." I'd be embarrassed to post that. Discovering your spouse sleeping with your friend is shocking. What happened to Mariupol is shocking. Thinner iPad aluminum isn't shocking. Arguably disappointing, but that's about as far as I'll go.

Damn I might have to cancel my order and keep my iPad Air 4 . If apple had cheapen up the shell on the iPad 5 yeah sure customers will be mad and complain but apple knows people still gonna buy there products regardless.

Oh I certainly agree. Most companies are pretty much forced into cost cutting when inflation is high. Apple is likely doing it only to maintain margin in an inflationary economy, not because their back is against the wall. You are correct that Tim is a bean counter at heart and an economy like our current one puts those types into overdrive trying to maintain margin.

I also heard that if you throw it out the window of a moving car it gets damaged ;)

Man I was gonna try that at first light! Thanks for the warning.

Lol but seriously I deserved that. Should have clarified that it was more of a firm press on the backside causing the line of distortion points, and it only does that on the right third of the screen. Left side doesn’t do that at all, so it’s probably just representing the hollow outline of the internals. The original creaking issue at hand still can’t be replicated. Absolutely no complaints here… I am enjoying this tablet.

You’re much braver than I am. I would not put excessive pressure on my tablets or phones just to see what it would do. Knowing my luck it would either crack something or cause cosmetic damage that wasn’t covered 😂
