Some iPhone Models Mysteriously Shutting Off at Night

There appears to be a curious phenomenon that is causing some iPhone models to turn off temporarily at night, which can interrupt alarms and other iPhone features.

In a thread on Reddit, a user complains that two separate iPhone alarms in his home failed to go off. Several other users also chimed in with similar issues, and it turns out that some of the issues could be linked to the iPhone turning off at night. From Reddit:

Hijacking top comment. Check your battery settings and see if there is a gap during the night. Yesterday a lot of iPhones turned off for a few hours during the night. In my case the phone turned back on 1 minute before the alarm

Some other people noted having to put in their passcodes in the morning, an indication that the iPhone restarted or shut off during the night. 9to5Mac highlighted these issues earlier this week, and we've also experienced the problem here at MacRumors, as have multiple users on the MacRumors forums. So my iPhone 15 Pro Max with iOS 17.0.3 spontaneously rebooted last night (10. October around 01:00 AM CET). The same happened to 3 of my friends with the same iPhone and same iOS, and to someone else with an iPhone 13 Mini, also on the same iOS.

You can tell if your iPhone turned off at night by opening up the Settings app, navigating to Battery, and checking the charging status over the past 24 hours. If there's a gap, the iPhone was turned off for a period of time.

The problem affects iPhone 15 models, but it is also impacting other devices, suggesting that it's something in iOS 17. Not all users are experiencing the shutdown issues, nor does it appear to be happening every night.

It is not yet clear what is going on, and Apple has not commented.

I had this exact issue, was so confused with why my iPhone was shut off, thank God I had my HomePod, iPad, and Mac alarm (that rang this one time). (iOS 17.1 on iPhone 14 Pro, didn’t happen in the .0 betas)

This has been happening to me on my 14 Pro Max ever since the iOS 17 betas first released this summer, thought I was going crazy because I didn't see anyone else talking about it

Apple: "We are aware that a small number of users are having issues with their third-generation butterfly keyboard iPhone 15 unexpectedly shutting off at night and for that we are sorry. The vast majority of Mac notebook iPhone 15 customers are having a positive experience with the new keyboard iPhone."

Not to worry everyone, for Apple Support has provided an update! This is not an issue, because if it was, Apple Support would know about it before it ever affected a single customer because Apple Support talks to millions of customers a minute. So, to address this known issue, you’ll need to restart your phone. If the issue persists, you’ll need to erase and reinstall using iTunes. If the issue still persists, you’ll need to do an RTA to Engineering, who will get back to you in 48 hr to tell you they are aware of the issue, keep your device up to date, and no further troubleshooting will be provided.

Oh, and thank you for being an Apple customer and we hope you enjoy the ALL NEW iPhone 15, the most powerful, most advanced iPhone Apple has ever released!

My iPhone 12 Pro rebooted yesterday around 8 pm, while plugged in. Actually I don't know how long it had been off, when I came to pick it up I saw it rebooting (white Apple logo). Latest iOS etc. Had never seen this before.

But I thought in some cases the phones turned off for a extended period before turning back on, even for several hours.

Had this happen to me on a 14 Plus, woke up this morning and had to enter my passcode in with the message about it needing to enter it again after the phone restarted. I wonder if it turned off after getting to 100% charge status.
