I think it might be related to optimized charging. I used „stop charging at 80%“ for the first 2 weeks on my new iPhone 15 Plus and changed it to optimized charging for exactly one day / night. I did not think much of it but it was the same day I was wondering why my iPhone asked me for my passcode to activate FaceID in the morning. I switched back to „stop charging at 80%“ the next day and it hasn’t happened again since
I had the opposite happen to my iPhone 15 Pro Max - changing it to 80% limit has stopped it turning off over night for hours.

Interesting, I had this happen the other night and was prompted to enter my password "after rebooting" when I woke up. I was so confused.

Does anyone remember the iPhone Coma Mode from the Fall of 2009? Phones were randomly going into a coma for several minutes at a time. Black screen, totally unusable. It appeared as if the phone was powered off and you couldn't reboot it or anything. Eventually, they'd wake back up after several minutes. That was nuts.

This happened today using Mac mini pro m2(Sonoma), safari window quit responding to the cursor then the cursor froze and the monitor went black. The screen came back to life at the login window and required my password. Same sequence repeated 4 times within 10mins. I closed safari and some other apps then reopened safari. So far no more issues

I’ve had this at least once. Also optimized charging doesn’t seem to work for me. I’ve had it on since I got it two weeks ago and it hasn’t delayed charging overnight a single time. I have been allowing it some time to learn my habits but this feels like too long?
Edit: my bad, just read the documentation and it literally says it needs 14 days. So we’ll see!

Good to know why I constantly have to enter my password on my iPhone every 2-3 days in the morning. My 13 Pro Max has been doing this for months, my 15 Pro Max hasn't done that yet... until now. My imac pro has been doing this too lately...

Only happened once for me on my iPhone 13 Pro last week, but would seem linked to iOS 17 as this was after updating to 17

Turns out it happened to me last night. I didn't even notice until I saw this article. Last use was around 1am, turned off around 3:30am and turned on at 9am. I had alarms set between 8am and 9am that did not go off, but my first alarm went off at 9am. Charging set to "Optimised". 15 Pro Max in the UK.

It's not only iPhone 15 and not only iOS 17. I have brand new iPhone 14 Pro with iOS 16.6.1 and I noticed it too. It doesn't happen every night but sometimes it does that I wake up and take my phone and it asks me for a PIN because the phone rebooted.

First time this happened to me last night. I’m on a 15 Pro on iOS 17.1 beta 3. Phone turned on for my alarm after apparently shutting off. I have optimized charging on, 80% feature and green energy turned off.

Well this quite a problem if you rely on the iPhone as an alarm to wake you up everyone morning and miss something important.

Wasn't a selling point of the new phones the always-on display that looks like an alarm clock? As you wrote, this doesn't create a good impression.

There appears to be a curious phenomenon that is causing some iPhone models to turn off temporarily at night, which can interrupt alarms and other iPhone features.

In a thread on Reddit, a user complains that two separate iPhone alarms in his home failed to go off. Several other users also chimed in with similar issues, and it turns out that some of the issues could be linked to the iPhone turning off at night. From Reddit:Some other people noted having to put in their passcodes in the morning, an indication that the iPhone restarted or shut off during the night. 9to5Mac highlighted these issues earlier this week, and we've also experienced the problem here at MacRumors, as have multiple users on the MacRumors forums. From MacRumors:You can tell if your iPhone turned off at night by opening up the Settings app, navigating to Battery, and checking the charging status over the past 24 hours. If there's a gap, the iPhone was turned off for a period of time.

The problem affects iPhone 15 models, but it is also impacting other devices, suggesting that it's something in iOS 17. Not all users are experiencing the shutdown issues, nor does it appear to be happening every night.

It is not yet clear what is going on, and Apple has not commented.

This is not conclusive by any means but I alternately charged my 15 pro max in standby and normal vertical mode. The nights I had it in standby mode I had no problems. The nights I charged it in vertical mode I had the power off problem
ig non 15 iPhones are having the power off problem my little experiment means nothing. If just 15 models are having this problem I’m wondering if the code added to activate Stanby mode has a problem when the phone is charging in some other mode?

Got me last night too. Being someone that is on call, this is not good. I do hope Apple comments on this soon and fixes it sooner. :)

Circling back to this thread after a bit. Clearly there is enough anecdotal evidence to support some sort of response from Apple.

Something is amiss and deserves addressing.

*edit* I have opened a support case w/Apple, and I encourage anyone w/this issue to do the same.

I have a question: how much of this is a problem if you're running an iPhone XS up to iPhone 14 under iOS 17.0.2 and you charge using the equivalent of the old Apple 12 watt 24 ampere USB-A charger? I charge my iPhone 12 with the Anker PowerPort II USB A charger and never seen this problem...

Sometimes I also have to enter my code in the morning. However, I think that in my case, it's not because of a reboot because of two reasons:

1. The message says something like "You have to enter your code to enable FaceID". When I reboot my phone manually, I get a message saying something like "Your code is required after a restart".
2. I have no gap in my battery graph.

The reason for number 1 is (I think) that I sometimes check the clock during the night when I wake up. So I tap the screen and lean over the phone (next to my bed). This probably leads to a few failed unlocks which in turn makes it necessary to enter the code to unlock it (that was also the mishap when the iPhone X with FaceID was introduced on stage all the way back then). My point is: Just because you have to enter your code, doesn't mean the phone rebooted, maybe there are other people as well who also just have to enter the code because of the same reason as me after some nights.

I had been dealing with this on my iPhone 15 Pro Max running the iOS 17.1 beta. Since the updated Beta this week (3rd version) it has not yet happened to me (fingers crossed!). I also went into the analytics and saw that my "Outlook" app was showing up a few times. After some research, I learned that if apps are showing up in the analytics there is likely a problem. I deleted the Outlook App. So, I guess I won't know if the issue was the last couple of Beta updates or if it was Outlook, but as long as my phone doesn't keep restarting, I will be happy! Misery loves company, and I'm just glad to see that this is a wider spread problem that hopefully will be addressed by Apple.

17.1 on 15 Pro Max, happening every night. Nightstand mode on a wireless charging stand.

When I talked with Apple, they specifically asked if my iPhone was paired with a watch running WatchOS 10, and it is. Just for what that is worth.

Interesting. I had a WatchOS 10 watch.

The day after the outage on my phone I noticed something strange. Mid morning I noticed my watch wasn't fully charged. That's never occurred before.
