Could be that new custom power management chip that's causing the issue. Hopefully it's just the firmware.

...I will just be double checking to make sure my phone is in fact charging every night.
I do the same thing even with my old 6 Plus (there have been a few times where it didn't recharge while plugged in, but very rare), and I'll keep doing it even after I convert all my charging stations over to the new ones.

This is just another "small number" of people might have the bug kind of thing. Seems like there could be some iOS condition that doesn't "grab" the USB connection when it's in the screen suspend state. Probably a power check fails for some reason with some condition, seems pretty easy to fix.

I've had it with using the Apple cable out of the box.

Last two iPhones it just stays in the box, there are way better cables available. Plus I've been wireless charging exclusively, except for CarPlay.

The fact that this phone didn’t come with a USB type C charger (even if it was just on the outlet-end with lightning connecting to the phone,) is disgraceful. I have a $2,500 MacBook Pro and you’re telling me in order to connect that with my 2018 $1,000 iPhone X I have to buy a separate $20 cord? Come on... be reasonable...

My question is what kind of monster doesn’t pick up his/her phone for an hour or more (so that USB Restricted Mode kicks in) and then plugs it in without logging in for even a quick check of each social media account.

People also didn't get to use their CDs with the MacBooks and we all know how that turned out. That's how technology evolves.

Wait, it's still supposed to charge like normal even with this new security feature? Cuz I have to unlock my iPhone 7 Plus every time I plug it into my computer before it starts charging (obviously only if it's been over an hour since my iPhone was locked).

My iPhone X locks up and requires me to enter my passcode constantly and I don't understand why. "Enter Passcode to Unlock Device"

I like Unbox Therapy. He may be an i hater but he's drawing attention to problems

seriously? If I plug in my phone it doesn't charge ... it's a problem.

We have seen tons of “problems” like this in the past 10 years. First software update, they get sorted. We all know that.

A number of iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max owners in the Apple Support Communities and MacRumors Forums report that the devices fail to start charging when a Lightning cable is plugged in while the screen is turned off.

As with many crowdsourced issues, experiences vary. In most cases, the iPhone XS or iPhone XS Max begins charging once the user wakes the device by tapping or raising the screen. However, some users report having to both wake the iPhone and disconnect and reconnect the Lightning cable to get a charge.

In rarer cases, the iPhone stops responding entirely at some point after a Lightning cable is plugged in while the screen is turned off.

Lewis Hilsenteger demonstrated the issue on his popular YouTube channel Unbox Therapy today by plugging a Lightning cable into one iPhone X, four iPhone XS, and four iPhone XS Max units. While the iPhone X began to charge, it appears two of the iPhone XS units and three of the iPhone XS Max units did not.

Unbox Therapy's video uses the hashtag #ChargeGate

Affected customers have documented the issue in at least a dozen discussion threads across the web, including the Apple Support Communities, MacRumors Forums, Reddit, Twitter, YouTube, and other forums and platforms. It's unclear how widespread the issue is at this time, but not everyone is affected.

Some users have speculated the issue could be related to USB Restricted Mode, introduced in iOS 11.4.1, which prevents an iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch from communicating with USB accessories via the Lightning connector if one hour or longer has passed since the device was last unlocked.

However, while USB Restricted Mode is enabled by default in iOS 12, Hilsenteger and others say disabling the feature does not help. Apple also has a support document that ensures "your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch charges as usual when it's connected to a USB power adapter" with the feature toggled on.

In the YouTube comments on the Unbox Therapy video, some users claim to be experiencing the same issue on older iPhones and iPads, so there is a decent chance this is a software issue that could be addressed in a future iOS 12 update. In the meantime, there does not appear to be a workaround.

If you are affected by this issue, we recommend contacting Apple Support. Apple frequently passes on device information and diagnostics to its engineering teams to address potential bugs like these, so all feedback helps.

Apple did not respond to multiple requests for comment, but we'll update this article if we receive any information.

I have video where I place my iPhone XS in the charger dead center and it charges. After 20-30 minutes it stops charging and after looking, the phone actually moved. It didn’t slide nor did I get notification that vibrates the phone. The phone actually moves by itself. I have video of this. Never had a major issue with my iPhone X. Keep in mind this charger is on a perfect leveled nightstand. It’s the Morphie charger.

Definitely not a universal issue as I haven't run into it on my XS. Hopefully just a simple software fix though.

I have this issue on my Max, wont start charging from idle have to turn on screen and unplug and plug in again for charging to start. I'm using the cable and charger that came in the box.
