It’s a fault. But let’s be honest, all this hassle is only possible due to Apple’s design and built quality. Would love to see this generally applied to all brands…
Personally, hope this makes Apple design the most need rumored new Display with adjustable stand (and no white bezels!)

I agree it's an internal affair.

The question is where does Apple draw the line with replacements? 1-3mm variation should be considered OK, in my opinion. My 2013 iMac has a 1.5mm difference and I have never and still can't notice it.
We can start by asking, does this affect in anyway the expected performance and intended use or any specified characteristics of the product?

It was interesting to see this news over the last few days. I had the exact same issue with an iMac I bought around 2008. I exchanged it for another one, and it was fine. But clearly, at least to me, this is a problem that iMacs have had before.

Back then, feigned grief was not something you could seriously make a name off of. Today, it’s one big way to increase your subscriber count, so you BET we have a lot of it now. :) In addition, there’s also folks that feign grief because they’re watched so many OTHER people do it, that they figure that’s just the way the world works.

Oh, and never forget the trolls :) The folks feigning grief on YouTube are at least getting paid for it. The trolls do it for free? Actually, there’s a few Troll YouTubers, too, you know the one(s). ;)

Another person on the Apple Support Communities also complained of a non-level display with a 1mm disparity between the right and the left sides of the display, and there was a third complaint on Reddit, with the person in that situation discovering the issue after watching iPhonedo's video.

“but super disappointing that Apple of all companies is shipping units with such a glaring oversight.”

How “glaring” can this oversight be if it takes watching a YouTube video about the subject for you to notice it?

I read on Ubergizmo that Apple is allowing users with crooked mounts to return and replace their computers even after the two week return window, so if you have noticed that problem with your M1 iMac, give Apple a call and see if they’ll take it back and give you a replacement. :)

But if someone chooses to have have Apple quickly solve the problem in that manner, wouldn't they be deprived of feeling aggrieved by Apple and Tim Cook (who of course needs to be fired), and not having a good whine and eye-roll on MR?

Apple doesn’t ever have to have the Mac compete with the PC World. :) PC vendors are still focusing on desktops and laptops like it’s a big deal, while Apple sells more iPads than Dell sells mobile devices/than HP sells mobile devices, for a few years now. By the time they start skating to where the puck is AGAIN, Apple will be skating to where the puck will be!
I love that analogy!

I'm sure Apple has done extensive research and found that a majority of users actually rest their head slightly in the direction of this design feature. Due to their boldness in design they are challenging other manufacturers to follow and increase the viewing angle. The way the light reflects as this exact angle allows for spatial audio to encounter the inner ear at an ideal frequency that other products have not been able to capture until this day. This great new day we are uncovering the brilliance in... it's a mistake, got it.

Give me a break - 1mm is only noticeable if you are trying real hard to see it. I just checked two separate iMac's. A 2013 and a 2015 - Both of them are actually roughly 1mm off from side to side.

Even obvious news about Apple will drive clicks to any website. You could post “Apple pays their employees” and I’m sure there would be a heated battle over that for 20 30 pages ;)

I wonder how many of the people insisting that this is a non-issue are people that purchased this iMac and feel uncomfortable that others might be saying something bad about their purchase.

You have more coverage of this issue than you had for many actual qualty repair programs. If that doesn't lend credence to it being widespread, I really don't know what does.

That only gives credence to it being perceived as “bad news”. There are folks that LIVE for communicating and re-communicating anything about Apple they perceive as bad and wrong. There’s not a similar activity among folks that are generally pleased because they’re not on forums looking to convince folks of how bad things are. :)

This honestly sounds like the same kind of rhetoric used to initially dismiss the COVID-19 pandemic when the lockdowns were starting. That the news is sensationalizing it and that it's not a concern because the news just lives to sensationalize concerns. That said, I don't know that every Apple manufacturing flaw is treated exactly how this is currently being treated.

No, it’s just a recognition that “I see more of something so it must be accurate” is in itself, not accurate. Coverage of an issue tells you nothing about the issue, it just tells you that there’s an effort to portray whatever the issue is as bad. Because, bad news drives clicks and it’s all about folks viewing those ads :)

Each article says that there are a lot of users complaining about this. Are you saying that each article, even if commenting on the same sect of users, is inaccurate? Because I'm disinclined to believe that, however much it's all about clicks, that I'm being sold an outright lie here.

I’m not saying it’s inaccurate, I’m not saying anything about the QUALITY of the information. You appeared to be placing an up front value judgement on the info based on nothing more than the QUANTITY of it, and that’s never a good metric to base value of any information on the internet.

The method works SO well is because many people just look at massive amounts of data and assume “that’s too many people saying that for it to be a lie!”. That’s just not how the internet works :)

I've followed enough coverage of enough Apple design and manufacturing defects over the years to know that if it gets to the point where it's being covered to the degree that this is being covered, it's an actual issue. Again, I'm not asserting that it is or isn't widespread, just that there's enough hubbub over it to make it worth examining just how prevalent it actually is.

This thread is living proof.
There are people who make a living on YouTube finding anything that can be perceived as a fault. Sensationalize, get clicks, rinse and repeat. It bends, it’s bent, it burns, it’s bad!
Apple has one of the larger if not largest vocal internet anti groups that exist. If one reads through historical threads just on MR you’ll see that there’s a gawd awful flaw in almost everything Apple.
what it ultimately means is for most they just pass it by (the whole crying wolf thing). It also means, unfortunately, the internet becomes more and more an unreliable source for customer feedback.

For every person on MacRumors that cries foul over an Apple design or manufacturing fault, there are at least ten people just like you who tell them that they're making a big fuss over nothing.

Some people don't want to spend $1300+ on a computer during one of the worst economies of the last century only to have to deal with returns or repairs. That sort of kills Apple's famous "It just works" element. Even if it only affects one or two people, you can't fault people for whom that's a lot of money to be worried about it.

Reread my post. I was lamenting those who may actually have a problem being drowned out by the Youtube clickbait crowd and the anti Apple hysterical crowd. It makes anyone who may have an issue be dismissed for the very reason that it’s made unserious by those crowds.

FYI, You’d help your case by not jumping into the YouTube/cry wolf hysterical SOP of appealing to emotion (worst economy!) and Apple is supposed to be ‘it just works!’(fyi, they are regardless of highly uncommon cases of defect that can happen despite the above mentioned crowds screaming the same hot air on almost everything).

Apologies; I definitely didn't read your post effectively before.

I'm unsure if I agree. But I also know that haters are gonna hate and that applies on both sides of pretty much every argument that exists on the Internet (and especially on these forums).

I know I wasn’t inferring that it’s not worth looking into. Whether there’s hubbub or not, anyone that wants more information should certainly look into it, just not go into it assuming “I’m starting with the opinion that it’s a big deal because I’ve seen 15 youtube videos on it!”

Thing is, those with earlier iMacs are measuring theirs and coming up with a similar variance. My thinking is that this has ALWAYS been a thing. Making something like this that’s absolutely 100% perfect is impossible. When there wasn’t money in it, folks would notice it and take it back for an exchange or never notice it because it was visually close enough.

However, recently there are a lot of people that have found that it’s financially viable to go negative on Apple. There are a lot of people that want to consume content like this… it increases their YouTube views, increases the comments on their posts, etc. And really, for anyone who places a greater focus on making money than integrity, it would be foolish for them NOT to jump on this lucrative bandwagon.

Tongue firmly in cheek:
OMG. Mine appears to be off by 1 mm.
Oops. Then again, it looks like the whole dang table is off level by about the same amount. Maybe I should return both. Oh, too bad, so sad. The table is 40+ years old. Guess it's out of warranty.
Really, folks. Get a life.
