Some New MacBook Pros Causing Flickering in 24-Inch Cinema Displays?

Hi,
I've had this problem with my Cinema Display 42" and 13-inch, Mid 2009 science the cinema display came out. Happens about twice a day and looks exactly the same as this problem. Don't try an blame this on the 'New' macbook pros or 'thunderbolt' because its simply been a problem for years, and really calling this a problem seems a bit of an overstatement, it's not a big deal…

Mike

Maybe you should take your Cinema Display 42" back to where you bought it since Apple don't make one. Someone obviously conned you ;)

I'd like to stress that this problem that is being reported now, is with 24 inch ACD's that previously had NO problems with other MBP's… Until they got hooked to the new 2011 MBP's.
Exactly. My ACD worked perfectly fine until the day I connected it to Thunderbolt.

Have had mine for a couple days and it is definitely flickering on my 24". I did notice that by going into my energy saver settings and un-checking the "Automatic graphics switching" it seems to be better. Might be worth a shot for some of those who are having the issue.
I will try this when I go back to work. It's always terrible for me for the first hour or so of connecting the ACD.

Two problems

24" ACD has two problems. One old and one new.

The all in one cable (USB, display port and MBP power) is faulty in some 24" displays, which caused flickering and one second blackouts. Apple has known about that and had been fixing those.

Second issue is with the new MBP, which can also flicker and sometimes scramble the image on the display. Often times just unplugging mini-display connector and reconnecting will unscramble.

Internal Apple docs that I was able to peek at show Apple is aware of the problem and likely to issue a fix the second problem, probably a software update to MBP or update to ACD.

No issue is known for the 27" ACD

Do you guys think this issue is to fix with a software update on the macbook pro's? I just got my new 2011 model and really DONT want to send it back right away :')

Wow, that must really suck. I can inform that my new 13" low spec mbp works just fine with my good ol' Samsung T220!

Another user here: 24" ACD hooked up to my 15" MBP. Have not encountered the issue at all until a moment ago, when the monitor flickered, but came back on.

Well it's been a few days since 10.6.7 has been out and for me the situation isn't any better.

For some reason today it's been really bad again - wasn't as bad the past few days.

The screen will tear occasionally, but I'm seeing more often it just turning off and back on. At one point it showed about 6 chunks of my screen all at one, fixing itself after a few seconds. I also just saw it completely turn off as if it had been disconnected. I had to reconnect the cable to get it on again!

Fun times...

Display goes black

My 24-Inch Cinema Display still goes "black" every so often when I connect it to my brand new MBP 15" i7. I have the latest Mac OS X V. 10.6.7 installed on my machine. I am rather frustrated with Apple at this point. I went to the Apple Genius bar at the Apple Store in my town. However, I was told that they could not do anything about it unless I had them check out my display. Anyone else still having issues?

My Display might have been fixed

Over the past few months, like many here and on the Apple support forums, I have grown increasingly frustrated with screen blackouts and flickers. I have applied all of the so called fixes but the problem got worse.

It has been driving me mad.

Last week, I called Applecare and after a discussion and reseting the SMC (which stopped the blackouts for a while) they asked me to take my display to the Genius bar for repair (didn't say why at that time).

So on Sunday I got ready to take my display into my local apple store but after the display woke up from sleep, the screen resembled one of those picture shuffle puzzles (incidentally, this artefact also occurred when I applied that last big OSX fix). I took a photo and then trotted off for my Genius appointment. The Genius I met apparently hadn't seen the black-out fault and suggested that they may need to keep my display and MBP for long term testing but I only left my display.

3 days later I get a call the display was ready for pickup and they had changed the logic board.

So far it has run for 2 days without a blackout but has flickered twice.

My conclusion:
a) I might be lucky and thats an end to this sorry tale
b) Well its early days and the fact it has shimmered twice is not promising. c) I have a theory that in my case, the 2011 MBP Thunderbolt port somehow damaged my display but now with a new logic board, the latest OSX patches might have removed the possibility of further display damage.
d) This is a temporary state and things will go downhill from here.

???

This sucks. i totally forgot about this issue when I got my 13" 2011 MBP.

I have a 24 ACD at work, and one at home. Both flickering, going black etc.

A few weeks ago I bought a new iMac which causes the same problems on my 24" ACD as described by other users. The first iMac was just returned to the retailer when Apple gave me a call to ask if they could get my iMac so they could research the problem. Probably bad luck for me since some people got a replacement 27" ACD because they wanted the exact same line-up.
A few days later the retailer were I bought the iMac send me a new iMac and unfortunately this iMac also caused flickering and black outs on my 24" ACD.
I have made several phone calls to Apple support but so far no Apple employee has helped me find a way to fix this problem. The only thing they tell me is that Apple is investigating this problem (which I believe is similar to the MBP and 24" ACD problems) and will fix it with a new firmware update. No promises however on when this update will be released.

I'm having this problem too.

I just upgraded to a custom-ordered MacBook Pro 15 inch from a 2006 MacBook Pro last week.

I would often connect my computer to my Samsung HD TV in clamshell mode without any problems.

But ever since I upgraded to the 2011 MacBook Pro the TV has the flickering problem. Actually, sometimes the TV's internal speakers would make a "pop" sound.

I'm using Mac OS X 10.6.7 build 10J4139. I noticed the MacBook Pro Software Update 1.4 supposedly gives you build 10J4138 so I'm assuming this software/firmware fix is present in my computer. The updater would not run on my computer (probably because it's already installed). Obviously it hasn't fixed the problem for everyone.

I'm hoping they fix this really soon because I can't afford to buy a new TV just so that my MacBook Pro works properly with it. On top of that, the TV is only 2 years old.

I've submitted a bug report to Apple and also replied to a similar topic on Apple Discussion forums.

Hopefully this gets fixed soon.

Today I made another phone call to Apple.
Again the answer I have heard before "sorry no solution yet for this problem, please wait for a firmware update".

Brand new MBP 15in causes blackout on 24in Cinema display

Hi. I have followed this thread and reporting the same exact issue. Just bought this top of the line 15in MBP three weeks ago and as soon as i connected it to my 24in LED Cinema display, the display started to have blackouts. For about a second the screen goes completely black, then comes back.

After the firmware update yesterday it looked fo a while that the trouwbles were over. Today starts with new flickering on my ACD's connected to my iMac with TB.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_3_4 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/533.17.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.0.2 Mobile/8K2 Safari/6533.18.5)

I get flicker and blackouts with my 2011 17" MBP and a 24"ACD; it makes working quite irritating as you may know.

So do you think that there is any truth to the theory that we are actually physically damaging our 24" ACDs by
plugging them into the Thunderbolt port?

I'm hoping not cos if this firmware update is simply a dream and there is no fix I wanna sell this ACD and get a new 27"TB ACD. It was working fine before Captain Thunderbolt came along and zapped his wonderful 10gb/s love into my innocent ACD.

Driving me mad

I also just got a 2011 MBP and plugged it into my 24" Thunderboldt display. It flickers to black for <1 sec randomly. Totally driving me mad. It did not do this on my 2008 unibody MBP and doesn't do this on my 2010 MacbookAir. Frickin' Thunderboldt pisses me off.

Any word on fixes those whove started Applecare cases. I've resolved not even to bother even though I have Applecare on both devices as I'm in Panama and don't want to ship >-< just went black >-< this thing off...

I guess I should be glad I'm not the one blacking out.
