I experienced this last year when I purchased a new iPhone 4S and within a few months the audio cut out.
I took it to the apple store for warranty repair and they said that I had immersed my phone in water and was NOT covered under the 1 year warranty! I spoke to several staff members there but none would even look at it and they canceled my appointment with the guru desk saying they wouldn't look at it but I need to repair it at the full price as if without coverage!

I was not happy and let them know about it. So I took it home and after a few hours it started working again. I eventually figured it out, I was going into and out of a cold environment; even with a pro otterbox case; and that condensation built up on the 30 pin connector and must have shorted out the audio for a bit and that the condensation from cold to hot caused the 3m water strips to show a false positive.

A year later the 4S is still working like a champ even though the water strips are bright red. I continue to work in such environment and am not sure I want to buy applecare for a iphone6 because I'll get a false positive within a few months on the 3m strips and they will not honor their warranty.

Was contemplating getting an iPhone 6 and got this is the mail 3 days ago... Next day got an iPhone 6 because I figured it was free money!

I was denied Apple Care protections upgrade plan just because the sensors turned red. I assured him there might be some mistake, my phone never went in water and i water did not go in any ports, as far as i remember. Also the device was working perfectly fine. But anyway, nothing happened to my iPhone 4S which is about to complete 3 years by this year end, so in all good, i did not upgrade, i saved that money.

Yup

I got $251.55

Why?

My iPhone (4, I think) went into the wash. I tried to save it over a few days but it would not turn on. So I took it to the Apple store to take advantage of their program where they'd sell you a refurb for $200. I told them it went into the wash. They checked the water indicator, confirmed, took the phone and sold me another for $200.

Fast forward to now, I get this check. I'm sure I and some others weren't supposed to but we got included in the suit regardless.

It could be there was no record separating people in my situation from those who had legitimate grievance, so there you have it.

I'm using it to pay off the early termination fee with ATT, getting the iPhone 5S unlocked, and activating it on MetroPCS for $40 unlimited Talk, unlimited data, unlimited texts. Buy ATT, thanks Apple.

Thanks Watergate.

Gee! Thanks for Nothing Macrumors

Way to promote a settlement that people affected can't even partake in. Why even bother with this article? Deadline was LAST YEAR.:confused:

I honestly don't even remember having a liquid damage claim, so needless to say I was a bit surprised to get a check.

So you didn't file a claim but you got a check. Wonder if I'll get a check, I never even heard about this case/settlement.

Visual Inspection doesn't actually mean anything

I took a Mac Mini into an Apple store for repair (simple failed hard drive replacement). They warned me at the time that they were somewhat backed up. Later that afternoon I got a call from the store that they couldn't repair the unit. "There's water damage inside...and...what looks like insects or bugs or something!"

Well, I found this surprising to say the least. So I reclaimed the unit and drove it right on over to an accredited third-party repair depot, and we pulled the unit apart there and then. It was, of course, clean as a whistle inside.

Apparently the store, in an effort to cut down on the repair queue, had decided to just call up various owners and lie like crazy about the condition of the units.

I decided I'd better notify somebody at Apple about what the manager of this store was doing (they couldn't have been doing this without management connivance), and that's when I discovered that there is no entry point into Apple above the level of the retail store. There was no one I could rat this guy out to at Apple, except the good old "tcook@apple.com" address - which of course produced no result whatsoever.

So...locals in Manhattan Beach, CA: beware your local Apple store repair depot.

This settlement is insane. I thought the lawyers always took 99% of the money and people are always lucky to get more than a $10 check.

An iPhone costs $200, and people are getting checks for over $200???

wow i dont think i have ever seen a check in real life

We still use checks for a lot of things in the U.S. actually. Just a couple years ago the apartment manager where I lived would ONLY take a personal check for rent.

We're pretty behind the times in a lot of areas.

as did i. remember to file this with IRS come tax time..........

Unless you deducted the cost of your iPhone / iPod Touch as a business expense, this is not something that needs to be added to your income.

If you owned one of those phones, you were likely contacted. If not, you didn't provide them with current info so they could contact you.

It's still going on!

Tried to get the defective battery on my iPhone5 replaced and got the same treatment so this scam is still going on. What they now do is tell you they found water inside even if the detection strips are still pure white and there is no trace of water when you get a non-Apple repair place to open it up.

Basically Apple will get you to buy another "refurbished" phone for $200-300 and will then "refurbish" your phone and sell it to the next customer they refuse warranty work on. It would be interesting if Tim Cook released numbers on how much revenue Apple makes from this little scam in his quarterly briefings!

4th check!

I've had every iPhone since the original. Needless to say I've gotten three $251.55 and one. $351.00 so far, there may be more. Who knows? Now at least, my two new iPhone 6 Plus' are paid for! Apple got to keep the money after all. :D

So for all those depositing the check can you say this is legitimate and that no unauthorized activity has been happening with your bank account thus far?
