The share tab is gone, too. I used this multiple times a week when emailing professors my research assignments/homework via PDF.

Before it was Share > share via email (PDF) send
Now it's: File > export > PDF > save to desktop > right-click PDF on desktop > share > email > send.

EDIT: i stand corrected; the share button is now located in the app window itself... by bad.
*walks away in embarrassment*

I definitly agree with the criticisims, but also see the point of OS crossplatform unification. Microsoft definitly misstepped with the approach it took with its portable platforms and Microsoft office. Maybe Apple saw the writing on the wall.

Well Microsoft don't even have a mobile version of their office suite out yet. The office on their Surface devices are still desktop versions.

They've been working on a mobile version with touch capable features for a while, and it's expected to be available for Windows 8.1 next year. I'm sure they already have an iOS version of it available, but they've been holding it back to give Windows a chance to gain traction.

So you're now classed as a 'Power User' if you use Pages and Numbers?!

'Power users become upset at lack of features on Stickies'!

apparently.

found it ironic that on the numbers site on apple.com they talk about advanced tools yet the only formula being used in the accompanying screenshots is the sum formula. i guess that makes you a super power user

They messed up Garageband too. You can't even export MP3 anymore or set the parameters you want.

Funny what they call an upgrade. Making the desktop less powerful to be parity with a weaker (IOS) platform is a mistake. Lowest common denominator.

While I like the interface of the new GarageBand (and I am sure some of the new features are great), I do miss the ability to apply effects directly to individual tracks. If anyone is able to do that, please let me know. I can't figure out how. Perhaps I am just missing something. Removing this capability seems pretty stupid to me.

First i was happy to see Apple give these apps for free, but after i tried to use them ... Well asking money for them would be an insult.

Not all doom and gloom

Couple points after using the new versions of iWork apps.

  • After the upgrade, you have both version of iWorks on your computer so you can always use the old version until you are happy with the new version.
  • I have been using the new version with no real negative side effects. A couple missed features, but nothing mission critical. And before you get in a huff and claim I must be a simpleton user, I am an ecological modeller working on some very complex projects.
  • Common tasks I typically find myself doing are much faster in the new version

Haha, I end up saying this with every new release of apple software in the last couple years, I think they just can't find the original guy who built the software so they decide it's just easier to start the code from scratch.

As do many of us, when forced by my employers. Thankfully some of us have been liberated from that world on our personal computers with iWork, Google docs, or Open office. ;) .

Well at least Google Docs is able to open certain work documents I have that make Pages and OpenOffice choke. But I will never ever use a product I can use online only. Or a product from a company that makes collecting my data their sole businessmodel. Using gmail for personal mail is one thing, using Google Docs for sensitive business documents is a whole different thing altogether.

Microsoft Office actually works, contrary to what the fanboys say, and can do complicated things the others can only dream of. And that it is the de-facto standard all over the world doesn't hurt either.

welcome to the world FCP 7 users have been living in. i make my living on FCP 7 and thanks to X have to use alternates that i find to be inferior to the years old product. they seem to be on course to simplify programs to the masses and cut out specialities seemingly hoping for an idiocracy style future. which is cool, because i crave more electrolytes.

what kind of uber complex projects do you work on, what iwork apps do you use and what changes have made your workflow faster?

A bizarre situation. I use Windows Office 2010, running in Windows 7 in Parallels, because Mac Office 2011 is just too crashy to rely on.

But I downloaded the new Pages to check it out, as the interface looked quite nice. It was fine for a while, and then I went to change the language settings, as I need to use English (British) and English (US) within the same document.

Is it just me, or have they stripped out most of the language controls? I need to set language by paragraph sometimes, but the only option appears to be a generic spelling setting.

After that I went looking for advanced formatting and paragraph controls, and couldn't find much.

I'm not sure why they bother, really.

Power Users? That use iWork?
Something must be wrong here!

Whats a power user?

I use Pages daily to make technical reports, mixing pictures, graphics, tables and text, way better than word do.

I'm talking of documents of hundreds of pages. I'm a power user?

I could do that with iWork 09, not with new version (that I already erased)

Oh dear.
Has Ive been put in control of program functionality and usability again :roll eyes:

The dumbing-down shows no sign of abating.
How stupid does Apple think it's user's are?

Hopefully now that there exists some semblance of parity between the iOS, iCloud, and Mac versions, the feature set of all three will begin to expand.

That is my thought. How can they hit 80/20 and then build back up together.

I use Microsoft at the office, but at home, even when on a PC, I used Open Office. I never cared too much for Microsoft. When I went Mac, I also went iWorks. For Pages/Word, I have no complaints, but I am certainly not a power user. For Keynote/PowerPoint, Keynote is better IMO. It is really only in Numbers/Excel where I find that Excel wins big. Pivot tables and other capabilities are much stronger in Excel. So in the end, as others have said, iWorks works for the masses. For the power users, especially in Excel, iWorks has a way to go, but I frankly am not convinced that is the target audience.

Character spacing

I'm slightly annoyed so far as well.
I haven't looked hard in the new pages (should I have too?), but where is the character spacing option?

I still use Office, when I'm at work.

I must not be a power user because I can't figure out what went missing. If I can't accomplish it at home, then I must be doing something for work haha.

We have seen the play before - I think this happens because apps might have been rewritten. They start with a clean slate and they will add those missing features again in a future update. Classic example is FCX, in each update they add a bit of those Pro missing features.

Completely agree.

There is NO NEED TO PANIC

This is just bringing OS X and iOS apps in line - updates to follow.

I'm sure Apple will listen to the feedback - they did and gave us the iPad mini with retina :D

MR should just rename the site 9to5Mac.com. Seems these days anything posted on 9to5Mac's site just gets reposted here. :D
