So how long should I wait to get an iPad2 to make sure all the manufacturing "kinks" are worked out? I don't have the first iPad and I'm excited to get this version, but I can wait a few weeks or even months if necessary.

That is unfortunate if it is happening to you, but just another example of why you should never buy anything during its first manufacturing run. That is the price you pay for being the one to say you were the first to get something.

It just occurred to me, that's why Apple's quality is slipping away. It's easier for them to mop up the mess than to build them right on a consistent basis.

Very interesting approach.

My first hand experience with this was last year, it took four tries to get a 15" MBP. The first three all had long deep scratches over 35mm in length.

I used to be able to order a new PowerBook or MacBook Pro and get a good one every time. My how things have changed.

I tend to think the enthusiast of today just doesn't know any better since they've never had one of the true premium Macs.

The scratches really shouldn't be an issue, things like that are relatively easy to avoid in manufacturing. But Apple is also somewhat new at having things produced at this scale and demand. Since they aren't technically the real manufacturer, they only really have so much control over the assembly process. If it's a flaw in the design engineering, the blame falls on Apple. If it's a wide-scale faulty part Apple takes responsibility, but hopefully they are getting some kind of reimbursement from the part's supplier.

These things aren't hand-made by highly paid American workers on Apple campus, pampered and delicately handled until they are placed into your hands. They are produced blazingly fast in less than acceptable working conditions (by US standards), by underpaid workers that rarely leave the manufacturing complex, and robots that don't adapt to anomalies in the process. They're then quickly packaged and tossed into cargo holds and containers and shipped around the world nearly overnight. It's actually a marvel that this is an even somewhat reliable process. So if you end up being unfortunate enough to have a bad one, enjoy it for a while until the problems are worked out. Then take it to a genius and get it exchanged

Here is an image of my G1 iPad I've been using since day 1:

Never once have I even been able to notice it during normal usage. The only times I ever see it are when something happens and I need to reboot my iPad while the lights are off. If yours can be seen in normal lighting, it's probably worth replacing. Most iPads will look like the picture here, and it's nothing to be concerned over, you can't notice it at all when the lights are back on, or on anything but a black background.

Our household has two new 32MG black iPad 2s. Both have substantial light spill along the Home button side of the screen. It's very noticeable when I'm reading a Kindle book in "night mode," that is, with the page color set to black with white text, and also when I'm watching a dark-toned movie in Netflix.

I called Apple Support this morning. They will send new units once they receive these two. They say it'll take 5-7 days for us to receive the new ones.

It doesn't sound like Apple expects this problem to resolve itself with time.

This is why the imac was such a disaster, blacklight bleed has been an issue for Apple for several years and has yet to be resoled, sad.

Got it like an hour ago? I called them and I'm getting a replacement. It will take around a week because I want personalization on it, without it they said it would ship in 1 business day. This tells me they have some stored away for repairs. The person I spoke with even said repairs come first. Fail Apple. -_-.

Considering Six Sigma was first developed by Motorola with the aim of to control defects to less than 3.4 in 1,000,000 operations. And DFSS (design for six sigma) has become an industry standard bearer within quality standards.

It would seem apple have intentions of becoming the butt of every joke within the industry sector.

At the current rate of complainants apple can't even manage 3 sigma.

Amazing to see how a once reputable brand can corrupt itself and how the power of marketing can manipulate and persuade the masses.

I just wish apple would get back to what they did best and just pay a little bit more money for there parts and assembly.

Being located on the northern edges of the Everglades you might think it would take the most time possible to ship problem less iPads into the various apple stores. I purchased my black 32g wifi I-2 about 1 month ago ( may 30) and shortly thereafter came upon the many threads speaking to the issue. I was p'd... Oh ,btw , it is an issue for sure. Apple genius may bs around it but they know it to. They are told what to say because an AppleCare rep and more than 2 apple store workers all said almost the exact same bs to me over the last month. They want to tell you that the longer you can wait for exchange the better your chances of satisfaction. They can't , not out loud at least.
I had a very minimal amount of light peeking through 2spots southwest of the home button. Very faint dime size haze, clustered into a half inch area on my device. Very minimal. I really could have kept it but it bothered me after all your posts fueled my quest for satisfaction. $600. Worth of satisfaction. Having grown up and lived in Brooklyn for 45 years I just would not stand for this bleeding business. It bugged me. I

could not wait for an appointment. I told them I was coming in this morning. In the Everglades(sort of)
we don't have crowded anything.
Sure beats times square...
I waited until this morning and with no verbal assurance from any genius that a replacement would make me happier " because the technology tends to produce this type of anomaly etc. Bla bla bs , I went to the appstore and had the rep check the comparison of the new replacement I insisted on 2of them looking at it together. He came out of a back room in which I was not allowed to go in to and said " rest assured that this new one is issue free". I was reluctant and informed him I had much time to keep coming back if need be. He was a good kid and assured me again my problem was over. He was 100% correct. No backlight bleeding. The dark screen used for the investigation showed a beautiful ,crisp , uniform grey black color from corner to corner.
Seems the issue free devices are out there now unless I just got lucky. I feel apple is to great a company to sit on this situation regardless of all the circumstances anyone can add to this. Soon all will see units of apple quality everywhere again. This blip on apples screen so to speak should ensure a great ipad3 void of any issues.
Lg has stated the problem exists. Apple has sort of stated it in a less than forthcoming fashion and has chosen samsung as the screen supplier for the future. How this change will be publicized I'm not sure but apple will have none of this in the future. My 52" Sam is a gorgeous LCD type tv that is exceptional in picture quality. Better than a late model philips and Sony I also own. Apple customers will be happy once again. Give it time and take your ipad2 back to them. Disregard their bs while there because as they tell you it's a general technology issue with LCD screens they are checking your new ipad2replacement for you to take home with you. Good ones are surfacing even all the way down here in gator and. I hope everyone is as happy as I am today with the ipad2they get soon. Thanks for initially informing me of the issue all you ipader's

Btw. The article stating LG's and Samsung's future and current positions in Apple's situation was in a well known publication. I just can't recall where the article is located or I would have included this info for interested appler's to check out. If I can find it I will post it. I'm sure most know this anyway.

DrDomVonDoom , your above post made my day. Lol. Good stuff
