i just returned from the apple store. I went there just to check out their demo units to see if they also had light bleeding but unfortunately i couldn't get through the crowd. I asked one of the guys there if it's a known issue because mine had this alone the bottom bezel by the home screen and by the volume keys.

He called his supervisor who quickly rushed me to the back and said "i believe you, we'll take care of you right away." Then asked which model I had. Once I gave all my information, they came out with a brand new iPad. Exchanged it right there and sent me on my way. She explained that it was most likely due to the glue still needing to settle and if theres still an issue on the new one, bring it back and they'll exchange it again.

I was just surprised because I was thinking at best they would just reserve a ticket and say they'll get back to me, but replacing the unit fully in 10 minutes, not to mention it was 15 minutes before the mall even closed. The funny thing was I was going to the mall to get a zagg screen protector but since the apple store was right there I decided to stop in and ask.

That's good to know!
Now I'm not worried about buying one.

So can I assume this means that the new one you where given didn't have the issue?

did you get a replacement unit or the whole thing with the package?

well i want to ask did you get a replacement for just the unit or the whole thing including the packaging? hahaha just asking coz im not used to replacing some stuff... thanks

woa.. that's bad :(
is it just me or are these backlight bleeds glowing yellow? :/ (is that a glue issue?)

I think it may be both. I'm not really sure yet.

If it keeps up, I don't think I'm going to take it in to get a new one, well not yet at least. If I do, it will be later down the road, maybe even closer to the iPad 3, but preferably when the included 1 year Apple Care is close to running out. That way when they exchange it for a new one, that one should last longer.

Funny... I noticed this on my device earlier today, came online and saw this article. I might go in to replace mine soon. I'll give my apple store a call tomorrow see what they say. I have a 64GB wifi white model, hopefully they still have them in stock.

After spending some time looking at the ifixit teardown, I have a strong suspicion that this is being caused by one of two things. The front panel is attached to the LCD using kind of sticky tape, and glued to the rest of the case. The LCD is then attached to the case by screws. I'm thinking either the tape/glue is distributed unevenly and is causing extra pressure on the LCD, or the mounting screws are over/under tightened causing warping of the LCD.

I'm tempted to try heating up the affected areas of the display with a heat gun tomorrow and massaging it to try and even out the glue, but I don't know if I'll have the guts lol.

This is normal for a thin LCD screen. My MacBook Pro and iPod Touche's screen have visible white light leaks on the sides, but this is only noticeable when viewing a very dark image in a very dark room. Compact LCD backlighting is never entirely even, so small patches of light can be visible in the dark. If the iPad 2's leaks are only visible in the dark on a dark screen, then it's nothing to be concerned about.

So in this thread, half of the people with iPads are complaining to the other half without them about their defective screens. What are people even moaning here for? If you have a defective screen, take it back to Apple and get it sorted out. If you don't have an iPad 2 or a problem, and haven't seen the problem for yourself, why are you telling the other half to put up with it?

This whole argument is just totally pointless and now I feel like I've just made it worse by adding my opinion. Oh well. Sorry, couldn't help myself.

I have had bleeding in almost all of the monitors or laptops I have bought over the years. The worst was in an old CRT monitor, going back many years now. The current 2 screens I use for my desktop machine have not had the issue, yet. They may never get it, who knows. My laptop did have a small bit of bleeding however it fixed itself after a while. An old TV of mine also had the problem and my current phone has the issue too. I wouldn't be overly concerned about it unless you are constantly looking at a black screen.

Really?can it do it in itself?

I just returned my iPad 2 back to Best Buy. I went in to the store complaining about the poor screen quality and the customer service rep. really did not know what to tell me. She said the best thing to do would be to call AppleCare. I called Apple and they said to return the iPad. I did end up returning it and I put myself on a waiting list for a new one. Before I leave the store the next time I am going to check the screen out to make sure. To spend $829 on something and have yellow blotches all around the edges just wasn't worth it for me.

the yellow blotches will disappear in a few days, remnants of bonding agents/gases .....

On my 2 I have it up near my volume mute button and down on the bottom left when viewed in portrait mode. I hadn't even noticed it until I read the article and looked for it. It is very slight, and very thin along the edge, but there none the less with a black image / movie scene. Reading through the posts I saw where someone mentioned the iPad 1 had the same issue so I grabbed that one and checked. Sure enough it was there when I "looked" for it. I had never noticed after having it since day one. So what does that mean to me? Who gives a crap. I never noticed and it never once detracted from the enjoyment of my original so I don't see it being any different this time around. Sorry to those who have much worse examples. I'm sure Apple will make it right for you.

ditto. my iPad 2 and original. and on my macbook air. when I squint in a really dark room with an all black screen... I see what looks like the aurora borealis. sorta neat. but unless i look for it, non issue. sorta like the fingerprints on the screen. I like that its thin. Accept there are tradeoffs.

Others may have it worse. but I wont be returning mine.

I just noticed it on my 32GB Wi-Fi model. It's on the top part of the screen, approximately 1/3 of the way across on the left, a few cm long. I had to make my room pitch dark and put on a movie with a 2.35:1 aspect ratio to notice it in landscape mode.

Part of me wants to head down and see if they have any new units to swap for this one, but 1) it's very likely I won't be able to see the problem under the bright lighting of the Apple Store, and 2) the same would hold true of any new unit they were to give me. I could have a unit that was even worse, and not know until I got it home under theatre-style lighting conditions.

Since this thing is under warranty for a year, I'll use it and see whether it starts to impact my enjoyment. If it does, I'll make the exchange once I know they've solved any issues.

Just remember that if you exchange it "down the road", you may end up getting a reconditioned unit - not brand new. However, I've heard reconditioned units actually go through better QA than do new products.

Unless you use your iPad in low lighting conditions with dark backgrounds. I think this applies to the majority of iPad users. It is absolutely something to be concerned about. Why would you accept a defective product under any conditions?

This defect needs to be front page news. Apple should be held accountable for these problems, and it's alarming to see how many people there are here who feel it should just be ignored because it's not a big deal. To the people saying this - do you own Apple stock or are you being paid by Apple? Those are the only two situations where I could even remotely justify those types of comments. Short of that, you're either blind or masochistic.

I can't wait for Consumer Reports to get their hands on one of these... :)

My macbook air outside light bleeds in the shape of the apple logo.
Seems this is nothing new for apple engineering.

Opened mine at 6:00 Friday evening and it was the first thing I noticed...bought from Walmart so I have 15 days to return. Do you folks know if the apple stores have healthy stock? As I might just have them switch it out(via warranty) ha ha! Also, it's my first iPad, so all this talk about it being much faster is making me scratch my head...doesn't seem much faster than my ip4.

That is unfortunate if it is happening to you, but just another example of why you should never buy anything during its first manufacturing run. That is the price you pay for being the one to say you were the first to get something.

I could not agree more!

Good thing for warranties (and most likely the problem is rare) but this is exactly the kind of first-run issue that made me not buy on day one. Even if problems are rare, why not wait a few weeks and make them rarer?

But I answered by own question. I want to have it now :) Start setting it up sooner, have it to use for my April taxes, have it for a possible upcoming trip... start getting the benefit of it sooner after waiting a year iPad-less.

So my new plan: get it anyway. If I’m one of the unlucky ones, and see the light leak, I won’t mind so much because I know it will be temporary. Then, after a month or two, I can have it swapped out for a new one under warranty. (A fairly painless Restore will get all my stuff back on the new iPad just like the old.) That means, worst-case, I can have my iPad now, AND have a later-run unit (tweaking any issues that arise)! Or, more likely, my first-run unit will be perfect. In that case... why wait? So I have ordered.

It always seems people make a huge fiuss over something every time Apple release something.

The iPad 1 it was the Wi-Fi Deathgrip
The iPhone 4 it was the signal Deathgrip
The iPad 2 it's the yellow blotches.
Every time a refresh of the macs happens tinned of videos about faulty screens are posted.

Are people just blowing things out of proportion because it's Apple, and they're always under the spotlight?

I have to believe that the same would happen with any product, but Apple seems to be suffering from these problems more than others. What might be exacerbating the problem is Apple's reputation. The marketing was pretty blatant about how "it just works," and they rubbed Microsoft's nose in poo relentlessly over Vista. Now that Apple is suffering from quality issues, despite Steve's insistence on perfection, people might be feeling a little vengeance, you know?

Edit: Plus, it seems like human nature to enjoy watching someone fall from the top. Maybe it has to do with the concept of leveling the playing field, and "now they're down here with me."

I'm just rambling now.

Agreed all the way. It's a very minor thing on my iPad 2 and simply not noticeable enough in a dark room for me to worry about. Total non issue, I'm not exchanging mine
