Seriously apple needs to Quality check their products before they rush out the door. This image retention issue + the gamut-gate issue = terrible iPad mini 2. For sure iPad mini 3 will fix these issues.

So let me get this straight. Apple owners purchase a device, then take it home and instead of enjoying it, they run multiple torture tests on each piece of hardware looking for some kind of flaw so that they can return it, get a new one, then go home and run the same torture tests again? At what point does any of this sound fun? How about you just take your new toy home, unbox it, and enjoy the damn thing?

Don't go looking for snakes, you might find them.

I went to this link, and it showed the checkerboard and gray images used in the test. If you stare at the checkerboard picture for about a minute, and then quickly scroll down to the solid gray picture, you will discover that your eyeballs have an image retention issue.

Jeez, my eyeballs are past the 14 day return period. I guess I'll just have to keep them and learn to live with it.

Just like a hamster running around a wheel.

Has anyone pointed out that this was also present on the 1st gen iPad minis and several iPads throughout the years?

It is a non issue, really.

Nobody reported this issue when it was on any other iPads, I have no clue why we are talking about it.

Image retention can ruin a product though. On my iMac, I could be browsing the web, then when I switch to photoshop I could still read the text on my canvas. This only happens after 5 mins of having safari open. The same thing happened with 2 screen replacements.

Paying £500 for a 7.9" screen, you'd expect it to be right and not suffer with issues. At some point I may have to use the colour grey on my iPad and I don't want the screen to be blighted with ghosts of the previous app view for the next 20mins.

I tried Arment's test and my rMini DOES NOT have the retention issues. So the issue is not with all rMini devices.

Gimped gamma, image retention, low supplies? Apple should have delayed the move to IGZO for this version. Most people would prefer a thicker, heavier retina iPad Mini with a perfect display over an anorexic tablet with self-image problems.

Time to pick up a used Nexus 7 2013 to tide me over until the iPad Mini 3 is released. You almost had my $400 Apple, maybe next time.

You did it for the full 20mins?

Raise a slight smile. :D

Makes sense ... if it will ever develop problems, best to know right away, when it's still easy to return it without any hassel.

Not good if your wife or girlfriend walks in on you while viewing porn.

I love porn and my girlfriend doesn't care I look at it (for now at least)

On the MBPr, the Samsung displays sucked too. Yellowing issues and poor color. I think I'd prefer the better colors and consistency with image retention over the Samsungs.

I actually agree. I thought the LG had way better colors, saturation, sharpness, etc, luckily the LG panel I had didn't have retention.

I don't think you do. My image retention issues are quite bad. Doesn't the yellowing go away after a while? Do you have any screenshots demonstrating it?

Most people work hard for their money, they don't want to blow it on defective products. "Don't go looking for snakes, you might find them" is unacceptable for the the most expensive tablets on the market.

...and why is this a bad thing again?

I'd rather know there are snakes than have them come bite me in the nut sack when i'm busy being 'blissfully ignorant'.

The biggest problem with apple is their design team. Now it's completely run by design first, engineering second priority. I get the thinness but seriously, for the longer battery life and better screen, it won't kill you to make it a big larger. No one is gonna say you suck because your iPad mini retina can last 24 hours on one charge and have a gorgeous 100% covered color gamut vs this gamut-gate fiasco.

I wouldn't even touch that nexus 7 FHD since i got one when it was first released and returned nearly a week later due to all the bugs and hardware issues. I went to best buy to try the nexus 7 FHD hoping to give it another chance but the same touch response issues are STILL PRESENT! And not to mention the really really pathetic tablet apps from android - apple iPad's have zero competition when it comes to software.

I'd take the $400 gamut-gate iPad mini retina over any android tablet. But i would never go back to an iOS phone, period!

The only other option is windows surface but that's worse than android!

I think his point is looking for something that you wouldn't even notice as a problem in the first place.

But....I thought this whole supply constraint issue was just a "marketing ploy" by Apple

How about, it's their product they can do what they want to?
