even through a camera, and then through another monitor, difference is visible.
im skipping the retina mini and getting next year's air.

You wont see difference till both are side by side... Strange that you are clearly indiferrent to size, main difference maler between air and mini;)

If you have a new rMini just enjoy the darn thing. If you haven't experienced image retention then don't worry about it. Stress testing your product just for the sake of seeing if you can make it happen doesn't make sense to me. If your rMini has an issue it will present itself before your warranty expires. Apple usually doesn't hassle anyone about warranty covered issues.

You've got a brand new toy. Go play. Through normal use the issue will present itself... if you have the issue at all.:)

My Air suffers this too, albeit to a lesser degree, but it's there.

Image retention isn't covered by warranty though. I've been through the motions with apple UK support on this issue in the past. They referred me to the this article and refused to replaced my screen again. http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5455

THIS coupled with the fact Apple are still rinsing people with 16Gb base models and charging morbid prices to double the size means i definitely wont be getting one..... yessss..... YESSSS.... **** YOU APPLE!

Foxconn has a preponderant role in Quality Control - they obviously failed to report these issues.

So yeah I definitely know that none of this is Apple's fault.

Yeah, just what I thought. Foxconn does not control the supply base, Apple does.

If my screen doesn't show any symptoms in regular use is it necessary to run this test? So far my Retina Mini has been flawless.

My iPad 1 has image retention 'issues' as does my 7 year old 30" Cinema Display. It makes no practical difference to anything and has probably only is considered an issue these days because there aren't any other juicy catastrophes to sell ad impressions with.

Makes sense ... if it will ever develop problems, best to know right away, when it's still easy to return it without any hassel.

IF it develops problems, you can just return it. Apple isn't that difficult when it comes to replacing products. Stop looking for problems.

Most people work hard for their money, they don't want to blow it on defective products. "Don't go looking for snakes, you might find them" is unacceptable for the the most expensive tablets on the market.

There's nothing unacceptable about millions of devices being produced and some of them being faulty. It's normal! Stop looking for problems.

...and why is this a bad thing again?

I'd rather know there are snakes than have them come bite me in the nut sack when i'm busy being 'blissfully ignorant'.

Finding snakes and knowing that there are snakes is not the same thing.
You don't know if there's a problem with your iPad, so don't go looking for them. You don't know if there are snakes, so the best thing is just to go about and beware of snakes along the way, you DON'T actually go looking for snakes. For the love of god.

Guys, guys, quickly!!! We have an urgent issue to discuss!

What shall we call this one? Displaygate? Retinagate? Retention gate?

My favourite is "Steve would have never allowed this" gate

Just did the test on my ipad 3. It has retention, apparently. Never noticed the issue in real life use. Been having this device since March 2012.

Tested my iPhone 5 too, no issue on that one.

"In normal use cases, it is unlikely that the image retention is noticeable"

All I needed to read.

Considering Apple doesn't replace screens because of IR issues, i say find out if you have it and return your iPad immediately rather than be caught with your pants down further down the line.

do you have a link to such "grid test"

Go to marco.org. There's a good test there.

I ran it, and my Retina iPad Mini shows some ever-so-faint image retention if I run the test for 10 minutes. It's nothing I'd ever notice otherwise, so I'll keep it.

I learn something new every day. Thanks for that info. Too bad about the lack of understanding from UK support. You could use one of my tried and true methods of resolution.

1. Start crying. Works 89.72% of the time. Tears + runny nose boosts effectiveness by 7%

2. Lie. Pretend to speak with your editor on your phone. Be overheard stating that you have confirmation of negligence and the "article" can be released as is. 66% effective. Claiming you were assaulted by employee gets another 32.61% boost.

3. Slowly strip naked in the store. By the time you've removed your T-Shirt a new product should be in your hands. 100% effective.:)

5-8 seconds.

That's still quite long for me. I can easily stay on one page if I'm referencing something at work. What a shame.

First thing I'll be checking if it ever arrives. I ordered on release day and it's still 'processing'.

perhaps. but I appreciate that the big iPad shows off colours as they really are - Displaymate and anandtech reviews say this again and again.

the size in my opinion is not a big deal
i wont ever use a tablet outside of the home - i have an iphone for that, and the mini is not THAT much smaller than the iPad air - screen size wise

I really don't know what it's like in the US or anywhere outside of europe, but in the netherlands, when you become aware of image retention, apple is simply abligated to either refund or replace your device, this is how warranty works. You can easily show any apple store employee that this is obviously a problem and that it is one you didn't cause. I don't get how you can possibly be caught with your pants down...
