Seriously apple needs to Quality check their products before they rush out the door. This image retention issue + the gamut-gate issue = terrible iPad mini 2. For sure iPad mini 3 will fix these issues.

The gamut issue is a design issue (the displays were designed with the lower gamut) and not a production issue (you don't get a gamut variance between different mini 2 units). The image retention is most likely a production issue from the vendor they get the displays from. Since it appears to differ from unit to unit, nobody knows how prevalent the issue is. In any case, just exchange your mini 2 if you think you have the image retention issue.

I would say the mini is a very good tablet if the lower gamut isn't an issue.

Oh alright, never mind.

I really don't know what it's like in the US or anywhere outside of europe, but in the netherlands, when you become aware of image retention, apple is simply abligated to either refund or replace your device, this is how warranty works. You can easily show any apple store employee that this is obviously a problem and that it is one you didn't cause. I don't get how you can possibly be caught with your pants down...

Visit the MBP subforum and Apple support discussion forums to hear stories of people being denied replacements because "the display is within Apple specifications"

Surely a poll should be set up to gauge how widespread the issue is. Perhaps we are only hearing about people who have problems, rather than those who have no problems at all?

So if I leave my mini screen on an image for 10 mins and then switch it to the opposite color... Then for a few seconds it will retain the image? How often would one even try to do such a think? I don't usually look at the same thing for 10 mins.

...and why is this a bad thing again?

I'd rather know there are snakes than have them come bite me in the nut sack when i'm busy being 'blissfully ignorant'.

Because when you look for something, through your attention and thoughts, you create it. Like attracts like. But when you look for fluffy bunnies, through your focus, you attract fluffy bunnies into your life.

how to do that test mentioned in article?

Hi there
I am new here, as I read this article I wonder if I have same problem with my new iPad mini, so please could you tell me how to do that "grid" test? Is it possible to do for everyone, is it free ?

Thanks

Always. You will always hear the loudest voices from those who complain. The people who are happy with their retina Mini are not interested in posting on threads like these, they're just enjoying their iPad.

That's why looking through threads like this isn't really accurate, since it makes it seem like every rMini has defects, wherein the reality is that millions of people are happy with their retina iPad mini and Apple is making the best iPad mini they can at this time.

Spare us the bs. "Making the best iPad mini they can at this time." Come again? If the device doesn't work, it's Apple's decision that they would rather take a hit than deliver a great product.

If they cared for a quality product they wouldn't ship it with questionable display quality. But money rules business, so that's the hand we're dealt.

i'm gonna wait for the iPad Mini Retina to be out of stock, then will order the new batch if it's made of Samsung panels ;)

I returned mine box unopened 2 hours ago. To use such a cheap quality display in a product that cost almost double as it's competitors is terrible. I was able to pick up a Nexus 7 2013 32gig for $229 today and that display is high quality. A 32gig rMini cost $500; not worth $270 extra.
At least my iPhone 5s and Nexus 7 are different like night and day. When I use the 2 its like a new experience. I just hope Apple does not go cheap display on us with iPhone 6 or it's 100% back to Android.

On the MBPr, the Samsung displays sucked too. Yellowing issues and poor color. I think I'd prefer the better colors and consistency with image retention over the Samsungs.

Those could be fixed with a modified color profile. The screen retention issues - not so much.

So let me get this straight. Apple owners purchase a device, then take it home and instead of enjoying it, they run multiple torture tests on each piece of hardware looking for some kind of flaw so that they can return it, get a new one, then go home and run the same torture tests again? At what point does any of this sound fun? How about you just take your new toy home, unbox it, and enjoy the damn thing?

Electronic devices are not magical, defects can happen during production and you might be unlucky and get a flawed unit. Testing thoroughly a new purchase is simply common sense since if a flaw is discovered immediately it can get replaced much more easily. It's also good for Apple since it's easier to try to refurbish a fundamentally brand new device than an even only slightly used one.

Reading a book, or referencing from it, having the top border of an app displaying, playing a game with static monitors such as score or minimaps.

Interestingly, I just ran the test on my iPad mini 1 (first gen) and it DOES have a slight retention. Though until now I have never noticed it causing an issue with any app and I read Kindle books - black text on white - often and it has never been noticeable. So... No worries here. I'll live with the "problem."

When I run the chess dot test I do have quite noticeable retetion on my iPad 3. I tried with iBooks too (both white and black backgrounds) but I couldn't replicate the retention. Also, I've never noticed any retention from the top bar when switching from portrait to landscape and vice versa...

Definitely going to test my Retina Mini when I receive it in next week. If the device works and has no discoloration or dead pixels I'm probably going to live with the potential retention it may have.
