“USB-C everything” haters lost omg it’s officially time to admit that #DongleLife is superior ??? eat **** “real port” people /s

We will almost never move to USB-C anyway unless they fix the problems with it. One of which is how rare it is for a USB-C hub to give you more fully-functional USB-C ports.

Until then, honestly USB-A is better and what I prefer to use. My machine now has USB-C, but I'm still buying -A accessories cause they cost less and don't use up a port that I can't cheaply get more of.
I don’t think that is possible by design.
Usb standard has always been a mess.

A little dramatic, no?
I wish it was, but for me it was like that. I loved apple for what their philosophy was. I hate to say it, but apple is a company that strongly relies on the leadership. They can be good business wise without the original leadership, but something minute will be lost.
Imagine tesla losing elon, same idea here.

I started to really get into Apple’s eco system when iCloud was first announced to sync across devices, and their devices were built beautifully from inside out. That might also be a factor why I am a bit disappointed with some of the decisions Apple make today. Might not apply to everyone.

Something very strange and interesting though. My friends who absolutely hates the notch won’t care bout the thicker look and the legacy ports. Those who think the notch is not a big deal hates the new design and the ports coming back.

I might consider jumping the ship now if another ecosystem becomes far superior to make it worth.

There's a Superuser answer about this. There's no mention of a design limitation, but for some reason the chip simply doesn't exist. They're able to add more USB-C ports via TB, though.

Seemingly contradictory, I see products like this, marketed as a USB-C to 4x USB-C hub. IDK if there's a catch, but either way, that's $40 just to add 3 more ports.

This still strikes me as being overly dramatic. They made arguably their best laptops in years, addressing basically every major from the previous design, and that's where you decide it's time to get out?

Also, good luck finding a better ecosystem. Apple may get some things wrong but their ecosystem isn't one of them.

This sounds about right for SD cards. They are slow and prone to fail.

Yep - and old cards could be the problem.

And don't forget about the fake SD cards from c2015 that were labelled 32GB, but were like 4MB capacity - fakes.

Any chances of this - I wonder about it.

I had a few old cards fail - but no problems with new SD cards so far.

What is an SD card. LOL
It stands for "Secure Digital" and is a removable flash memory predominantly used in cameras /s :)

I guess you already knew this, but if you or others want to find out more:

Never (knock on wood) had issues with SD cards in cameras per se.

However on both my late-model 2010 Mac Mini and 2014 Mac Minis, the SD card slots work maybe 50% of the time when first inserting, then other 50% of the time require re-insertion with multiple attempts before the Mac shows in Finder, usually either by not fully inserting or with the locking mechanism for read/write on the SD card moved to be in the middle, so it can still be written to/content deleted (easier to connect camera directly via usb for transfer/file deletion to Mac).

SD cards for their physical size/weight and memory capacity are pretty phenomenal really.

I agree about leadership, except I was feeling this with the 2016 release, not this one, haha.

Pales in comparison to the drama Steve Jobs used to exude. Apple has its roots in perfectionism.

Because hdmi port and cable is ugly. On the new MacBook Pros, they are on the other side of the ports, so there will be a thick cable going across my desk.
Also Apples’ displays (LG ultrafine and pro display XDR) doesn’t even have hdmi in.
HDMI wouldn’t provide the channels for the usb hubs on the monitors to be functional.
HDMI ports cannot be plugged in both ways, so a bit harder to get it in.
HDMI won’t charge my laptop. I don’t need this functionality for my second or third screen, but it is a con nonetheless.
You should see how hideous my Mac mini setup is.
- Built-in HDMI port going to screen 1, 2K.
- CalDigit dock with one of its two DP ports going to screen 2, 2K.
- DisplayLink USB-A to HDMI adaptor on the CalDigit dock going to screen 3, 1080p mainly so stuff is bigger. (Was going to use the other DP port for this screen, but you need DisplayLink to put a third monitor onto a Mac mini.)

I've never had issues with my 2017 MBA. Now I'm having to send back my M1 Mac mini because no matter what HDMI cable I use, I get vertical dark stripes across my screens that is very noticeable on dark backgrounds, each about a millimeter wide and a millimeter apart. No other computer I've ever used (and currently use) on these two identical model screens have done this.
sigh. can we just get something that just works? Really liked the Mini because it was replacing a 2017 27" BTO iMac. ugh.

LOL

My point still stands.

Explain how an SD card can work in every other card reader (including other Macbooks) but not in these new Macbooks?

Clearly there is something wrong with these new "faultless" Macbooks, right?

:p
I’m on your side bro
I made a mistake I was replying to the guy you were replying to??

And NO, I don’t speak for all pros, but it is not a correct assumption that all pros uses sd cards or need a dedicated sd card reader.

I would concur, but I also don't think Apple intended to market the SD slot only to "pros". They are marketing to attract *customers* in general. Many of who will have only amateur interest in the SD card slot. There are an awful lot more people who who have devices that use SD-cards than there are professional photographers/videographers using these machine. Apple is simply following the numbers.

I hope they remove the legacy ports and bring back the fourth thunderbolt. That is what a lot of pros need. I would gladly take 6 thunderbolt ports so I don’t need a thunderbolt dock.

If Apple can't fix the buggy SD-card slot to deliver reliable performance with any functional SD card, then I would agree that would have been better off just not including it in the machine.

Do you know newer cameras have usbc for exports?

This generally involves a number of steps on the camera to set it up for transfer, requires another cable, moving the camera from its tripod etc. I found it much easier to just eject the media and take that to the computer.

Do you know CFast and other external camera storage exist and are widely adopted by higher end users?

I've only ever seen CFast on prosumer/professional video / cine cameras, so this is a tiny market share. Did you mean CFExpress?

No, pros do not need integrated sd card readers. Some might want one. Even if they do use sd card, a dongle is such an insignificant part of their daily gear.

I agree - probably many, if not most - professional photographers/videographers will want to use something else, but may be grateful to have a backup SD slot. The slot is for the wider user base of people who "have a camera" or use SD-cards for something else.

Apple really confuses some people with the "Pro" name. Anybody can buy one of these machines if they have the desire and funds - you don't have to prove your membership of some professional organization, or give a secret handshake :)

I would love to have a Cfexpress slot since most high end cameras use that nowadays. I don't have anything with an SD card anymore. For the last 5 years or so.

Apple has been a disappointment of late. My M1 Mac Mini (MMMM ?) doesn’t play any sound when I AirPlay to HomePod Mini after the Mac goes to sleep, although it connects and play goes on. A restart solves the issue, but then once the Mac goes to sleep any subsequent AirPlay to the HomePod produces the same issue until another restart. Some FaceTime calls don’t end properly. If I end a call (usually there’s an issue with the call) and try to call again, I’m immediately connected, with the tone, as if the the person I’m calling has picked the call, but then it’s a false call. Sometimes it takes ending and re-calling severally before the call truly ends and I’m able to call properly again. I had the issue on my 12 Pro after updating to iOS 15. Same issue is happening on my 13 Pro.

Memory cards were a mistake. The SD card reader is a waste of space on the new Macs

You realize that SD cards are to this day, the standard memory in all professional cameras? If you think the SD card reader is a waste of space then this laptop isn't made for you.

Partially true: many higher end cameras, especially those with rapid fps and/or higher resolution, are moving to CF Express, or a combination of this with SD, in order to be able to rapidly clear their buffers. They are also more reliable (so they say). I expect in 5 years all pro cameras will be dual CFe.

My 14” MBP also affected by that, my SD card reads extremely slowly in the built-in slot, but normally fast in a USB card reader.

That's because the built-in reader is using the cheap slow standard, and a recent external reader probably uses the more recent fast standards.
