I am sure it is not coincidence at all. When a new product appears on the market, it will inevitably take away market share from competing products. I think those looking for some conspiracy, or tail between the legs scenario that just does not exist are missing the point. I think Sonos is making a good business decision to undercut the price of Apple's products to sell more speakers. I see it as a plus, especially since a lower price for a quality speaker benefits the consumer. Win win.

I am all for brand loyally, but when it starts to be an us against them thing, many will miss out on some other great technology.

A $50 discount isn’t really undercutting when you consider that Sonos gives you two speakers, plus true stereo and multi-room audio, for the same price. Even without the minor discount, two Sonos speakers were a much better deal.

Similarities?

You mean like ability to link two speakers together for true stereo sound? Oh right, you’re going to have to wait (until ???) and buy another HomePod to get that.

You mean like placing one Sonos One is the kitchen and the other in the living room and having multi-room audio? Oh right, you’re going to have to wait - and buy another HomePod - to get that.

Or are you talking about being able to play music from Apple Music, Google, Spotify, and 50+ additional services? Oh right, with HomePod you can’t.

What similarities are you talking about? The price point? Because that’s the only similarity and it’s pretty obvious which is the better deal.

HomePod, when compared to Sonos, brings to mind that saying about a fool and his money...

So you must pay a fortune per month for those 50+ services you need. I need Apple Music s
Amazon Music, Spotify, Pandora, blaw, blaw, blaw support on the HomePod blows. Your point is?
so you bought a HomePod all ready and tested it? Or just making up crap?

Sonos feeling the HomePod heat ;-)
Eh

Neither are going to battle to the death, having choices and competition is refreshing. Though I will buy both if indeed "battle to the death" is a feature. :)

(I may miss the old Battlebots show a bit too much...)

Personally debating what to do. No Google of Amazon voice assistant is welcome in my house 24/7 currently. The Alexa/Sonos integration so far is not that useful for my needs, so the cheap Dot sits unused. So the Songs with Alexa mics isn't interesting yet. Potentially one though as I have a single Play:1 currently and a PlayBase. Sonos could become my surround sound TV setup + all the music sources.

HomePod could then go in the bedroom for easy voice controlled Apple Music for now.

Ultimate dream would be Sonos + HomePod all working together over Airplay2, and using Siri only to access any music source Sonos supports. Sonos remains a great company, much like Apple with how they are 100% customer and sustainable focused. Aka real companies, not these Reagan like zombie companies screaming "shareholder value" all the time ;)

I agree, but when you offer reasoning like that to someone entrenched in the apple "Ecosystem" mentality thing, your arguments will get you nowhere. Brand loyalty sometimes defies reasoning. I am sure the HomePod will be a fine speaker, but for those already criticizing Sonos or claiming the company is running scared is just an example of the mentality here.

Well it is an Apple Forum, so I guess I answered my own question.

Read a little bit, you might learn something...

"In the case of Apple's HomePod, though, you'll only have one choice: Apple Music."

http://www.businessinsider.com/apple-homepod-apple-music-spotify-2017-6

Also:

https://www.bloomberg.com/news/arti...s-homepod-is-three-years-behind-amazon-s-echo

"Amazon offers thousands of “skills” (voice-activated apps) that let users do a range of things (including buy stuff from Amazon). The Google Home Mini, which debuted earlier this year, is similarly endowed. The HomePod will be mostly limited to playing tunes from Apple Music, controlling Apple-optimized smart home appliances and sending messages through an iPhone".

Not saying one is better than the other, just giving some perspective.

People do understand that some of us do not use any of those other services at all... so that infographic means absolutely nothing. The missing HomeKit capabilities does however mean a lot.

Don't get me wrong, I love Apple. But I hate being locked into a monthly subscription service.

Apple Music is fine, but so is Spotify, and so are the half-dozen or so other streaming services. The fact they all exist, and compete against each other, is awesome. Are all these "people" you speak of so sure they will never ever switch to a competing service?

As for HomeKit - give me a break. There is nothing the HomePod does that my iPhone and AppleTV don't already do regarding HomeKit. Which in itself is pretty useless. I have a bunch of HomeKit accessories and never use HomeKit to control them. The native app is always way better.

Or just buy a Sonos Play 1. It doesn't have Alexa integration, but it's a damn good speaker. I have three of them. They're currently selling on Amazon for less than $140 USD.
EXACTLY! And if you do want Alexa integration, you can do that by having an external Alexa. I have two play 1's paired as stereo with a cheap <$50 dot and it works GREAT! LOVE IT!

And you can have Apple Music on Sonos. Or Google. Or Spotify. Or whatever you CHOOSE. Along with true stereo and multi-room audio, for far less money. Personally I swore off Apple Music after it trashed my music library.

Sonos really appears to be the way to go.

It doesn’t really matter what HomePod does right now, who releases speakers that can’t even play stereo at launch?

I have become a big believer in platform agnostic systems like Roku, Sonos and I’m sure you can pick out a few others. Those are the only two I have experience with.

I am fine with taking the iPad and iPhone over Android and Windows devices but Apple has given me zero value proposition for taking either Apple TV or HomePod over their platform agnostic competition.

I kind of dread the potential reality of an Apple TV for obvious reasons.

I'll still take the HomePod, Alexa sucks

In a sense, let's hope Siri brings the same expectations with the HomePod. The sound quality amongst these other speakers like Sonos and the Google Max are very good, but if Siri becomes frustratingly problematic to use on the HomePod, that severely will take away from the user experience. So I'm hoping Siri delivers in that department.

And Mr robbyx, yeah, don't be an Apple ass either. The worlds largest company isn't punching down at Sonos and other competitors, why are you? It's not a good look on ya.

Who am I punching exactly? Apple? For an overpriced, late, feature incomplete product that can’t compare to the competition? Sorry if the truth hurts.

And how about you take all of your sexist ranting and assumptions about gender elsewhere?

Plus Sonos offers way more products and the ability to connect to existing home stereo systems. Let’s face it. Anyone who is serious about audio quality isn’t looking to a $350 WiFi speaker.

Agreed. Specially a speaker that only plays nice in the Apple ecosystem. Want to use it to play audio from your TV during a TV show? Nope, not gonna happen.

my play5 blows all other wireless speakers away. Too bad Sonos can’t write a better app.

Really? How many of your Smart home devices are Homekit only? Everything I have can be controlled by Homekit and Alexa (and presumably Google Home too). The only things I have that can’t (ie are HomeKit only) are some Elgato Eve power sockets which coincidentally also are easily the worst pieces of hardware I’ve bought in a long time.

I have a couple of questions:

1. How well does Apple Music work with Sonos?
2. Isn’t the HomePod more similar to the Sonos Play 3 than the Sonos Play 1?

I have no problem with Siri, Works everytime for me.

We know, more or less, when multi-room and stereo audio is coming. It's coming in 11.3. About two months passed from the first iOS 11.2 beta until it's release, so we can surmise it will be about two months until 11.3 comes out.

If you like Sonos is a better product, buy it. If you can't wait two months, take a deep breath, then buy Sonos.

But for those that think the HomePod is a compelling alternative, having to wait a couple of months shouldn't dissuade you from considering a HomePod.
