Following a leak earlier this year, Sonos today announced the Sub Mini, a new wireless subwoofer with a more compact design and lower price than the full-size Sonos Sub. Sonos said the Sub Mini will be available globally starting October 6, with pricing set at $429 in the United States, compared to $749 for the full-size Sub.

Sonos says the Sub Mini features advanced digital signal processing that "maximizes bass response and reproduces the full-toned low frequencies expected from a much larger subwoofer." The subwoofer can be paired with AirPlay-enabled Sonos speakers and sound bars like the Beam, Ray, and One via Wi-Fi for a complete home theater experience.

Using the Sonos app for iPhone or iPad, users can easily add the Sub Mini to their Sonos system. With a supported iOS device, Sonos says Trueplay tuning technology "adapts the bass for the unique acoustics of the room so it never sounds harsh, muddy, or flat," even if the Sub Mini is placed next to a wall in a room.

Design wise, the Sub Mini has a cylindrical shape and is available in matte black or white. The subwoofer is equipped with dual inward-facing six-inch woofers and two Class-D digital amplifiers, along with dual ARM Cortex processors and a 10/100 Ethernet port.

Smaller for a sub sounds like a contradiction, since the point of a subwoofer is to move relatively large volumes of air at low frequency, and that means volume. My expectation is that one gets what one pays for, and that this much smaller, much cheaper version is most appropriate for smaller spaces. [And the Sonos website says exactly that.]

Many folks think speakers are independently good or bad, but that is not how it works. Different speakers perform differently based on the space that they are asked to fill. A pair of original HomePods, for instance, are spectacular in a smallish space (say 12x12) but the sound will fall apart in a large space or outdoors.

I do wonder how well the auto-configuring routine of my original HomePods would balance the HomePods with a sub like this one. This small sub might be about appropriate to supplement the 7" HomePod pair. [Edit: The Sonos site states: "Sub Mini will only connect to an amplified Sonos product."]

Does it only match with Airplay speakers or the old Sonos speakers too? This article makes it sound like it only works with the newer ones

It will match, but it depends on how old, I have older speakers (original Ones) with newer speakers on the same network. I am definitely getting this for my smaller living room with hardwood floor. Looking forward to richer bass in that room.

The Arc is Sonos' Home Theater solution vs the Beam which is intended for smaller spaces or rooms. I have the same set up as you (Arc + 2 Sonos One's) and have a Sub 3 paired to it. If price isn't a factor, I love this set up as the Sub fully compliments the rather lackluster low end response that the Arc alone pumps out.

That said, the Beam has incredible bass response (better than the Arc for it's size) for whatever that's worth. Cheers!

I am interested in this. Arc + Sub is overkill for my needs. Beam 2 + Sub Mini + a few spare Symfonisks I already have for rears is more in line with my needs and desired price point.

Thank you! Then I will go for the sub 3.

Yo, those Symfonisks from Ikea are incredible values! I have two for the each bedroom and am amazed at how good they sound for the price

I'm disappointed that it doesn't work with the Sonos Move. I can understand it not working when the Move speak is transported to other locations, but I would like to see it work when both are in the same room and the Move is in it's charging base.

I have the Arc and saw on the Sonos website that they recommend the Sub 3 unless you have a small space. If that was the case, the Arc and the Sonos One speakers are probably overkill.

You could always get it and return it if it doesn't meet your needs.
