To be fair, it's tough to build a good app. It gets harder if you're using a cross-platform toolkit like React Native or Flutter - even harder if you're using SwiftUI.

The best apps are still the ones that use the native SDK (UIKit) and are built by developers that actually know how to use it.

*cough* Microsoft *cough*

At least during the setup of a Mac, iPhone, or iPad, Apple lets us bypass the Apple ID linking and do it later at our convenience unlike being forced to login with or create a Microsoft account when setting up Windows
"However, you are not required to use a Microsoft account, even though it appears that way. During the initial setup, Windows 10 tells you to sign in with an existing Microsoft account or create a new one. It does not mention that you can sign in with a local account, but you can."

Im not a conspiracy theorist but I can’t help but think there’s more crapware in the new app beyond just support for some headphones…

It’s such a huge blunder to not go with an opt-in approach. Especially -without- a way to rollback or revert to old app? That’s flat out insane.

But it does show how desperately they needed users to ‘upgrade’. There either is a -really- compelling reason, or internally, a bunch smart people who know what they’re doing, were not listened to.

There’s no way this level of ‘send it!!!’ makes the cut for any major software deployment unless you have no idea what you’re doing.

Unless of course, you know exactly what you’re doing…

A great opportunity for Apple. Using AirPlay2 Sonos speakers, Apple Music, solves the problems Sonos is having. Works great and an added bonus, integrates Apple, Bose, any AirPlay2 speskers to the listening home. Something Sonos does not do. Sonos makes great speaker hardware. Buy their hardware, use Apple Music to make it work. Apple Ad, welcome to Apple Sonos users. Exactly what I have done.

Agree AirPlay2 is great, encouraging people to buy Sonos, considering, ehhh.

I have a Play 1 and Play 3 sitting in the basement. Anyone can have them for the best offer. The old app was miserable and barely worked. The new app made them unusable. I bought an Apple HomePod and 2 HomePod Minis and wished I had done it years ago. They work flawlessly.

I sold every Sonos speaker I had in my home setup out of frustration. All I wanted to do was listen to some music. Going to give the Apple system a try - looks more approachable for entire family to play some tunes without fighting app glitches and crazy volume woes.

Do you folks not understand that Gorman has no actual sources at Apple and is simply using common sense and clever writing to appear to be in the know? Apple is a three-trillion-dollar company, there is simply no way anyone at Apple who would be privy to the company’s plans would be able to get away with these “leaks” for very long without being found out and sacked if not worse.

I can’t understand what is happening. I have a home theater with a bunch of speakers all over my home. When the app changed all the speakers went dead. I followed troubleshooting instructions published on their forum and ended up setting up everything from an android phone (yikes using that was awful). After that I haven’t had any problems. I have used the new app plenty, and haven’t notice anything.

I guess some wildly overpaid executive sitting in a boardroom somewhere figured out that it wasn't a good idea to rush the "upgraded" app and that it needed more work instead of being forced on their customers, huh? :p
Could say the same about all tech companies with crappy software! Apple, Meta, Alphabet, and etc. So many companies have software bugs and release crap that isn’t ready.

Just a few months after debuting an all-new mobile app for controlling its audio products, Sonos is considering bringing back the previous version of the app following numerous user complaints, reports The Verge.

While Sonos has been working to address a number of missing features and issues with the new app and has laid out a timeline to keep users updated on the company's progress, The Verge reports that "discussions high up within Sonos" have centered around potentially offering the old app as an interim solution.Just last week, Sonos CEO Patrick Spence revealed on the company's earnings call that it will be delaying two upcoming product launches due to "challenges with our new app." While Spence did not identify the products in question, one of them is likely to be the successor to the company's flagship Arc soundbar.

I purchased over $2,000 in Sonos gear a year or so after it was released. Worst purchase I ever made. Constantly failed, needed complete reload, reinstall, setup.

Then a new "update" would bork the system again. Updates are very, very frequent with Sonos and always cause problems. This combined with depreciation of features (sonos: but thanks for your money.. scoff scoff) and I had to stop using it. The whole lot went out in the garbage for 'recycling'.

Have not missed it for a second.

Apple should just buy these guys. Would only be half the cost of their Beats acquisition. Beats is more portable and low-end consumer brand, Sonos can be their home audio / higher-end consumer brand.
Been saying this for years. Imagine Sonos integration with Apple products ?!?

What part aren’t you understanding again, exactly?

How much did you spend?

And you had to do -what now??- to use your speakers after an app forcibly updated?

LMAO. It must really be hurting their sales for them to consider doing something like this.
Yep. I was going to buy a couple of Eras and a Soundbar this Prime Day or Black Friday, but now I'm definitely not going to.
I was a big Sonos fan and owned six Sonos speakers. I'll keep them, but I don't want to spend another $1000 knowing that they can brick them at any moment if some manager decides to get a bonus.

I stopped buying Sonos at home and work.

I had 3 rooms plus outdoor patio I put on hold. Well over $5k in product.

It's not just about the app. Yes, I can't stand the new app....but the issue is that speakers disappear, skips songs halfway through, speakers fall out of groups while playing, etc.
Interesting - I've not encountered this at all, but then I mostly use my speakers via AirPlay or from my soundbar, or the headphones over bluetooth. I'm not saying your point isn't valid BTW, just intrigued how many different issues people are having.

Or they could republish the old app as "Sonos Classic" and keep the new app as well, while they work the bugs out of it. Best of both worlds.
Exactly. Bring back the old one and let the new one run in parallel as a beta that they can iterate on using feedback before replacing the old one with.
