Why didn't Sonos allow opt in beta testing of the new app? They would have avoided all of these problems if they listened to user feedback as an opt-in.
Doing that would have cost more money. Not only must they offer some level of customer support for two software products but they need more developers to do parallel development of two products.

It's too bad, because Sonos went from a company willing to sacrifice for the long term vision to a typical investor-appeasing shorter-sighted corporation. It doesn't seem to be working out for them lately.

no one asked for parallel development. this is a drastically new/different app. release it as a distinct app, let the paying users choose if/when they want to upgrade.

very simple. if they had done this, all of this would be a no-op and everyone would be happy. I'm gonna guess somewhere along the like Dev/Eng teams were cut and Contractors and PMs are at the helm.

edit: well well well. look at this article from today.

MBAs and VC Investor types, pay attention. Your great ideas for reducing cost end up biting your ass. Stop firing in house development teams and thinking non-technical, non-FTE resources are gonna be able to sail the ship.

I just dont understand why something as simple as being able to just search for an artist, album, song, or just click an album cover to see all the songs is so complicated. Come to think of it, why can't you click on an album cover and just see the songs on the album in CarPlay and on the music app?

Contractor dev who don't understand, use or own the products. They will gladly take poor/gapped requirements and build/bill it. Thats where my money is, because thats where their money is. Seen it enough.

Haven’t used the ray but I can tell you that a stereo pair of two Era 300’s sounds *way* better than it has any right to. For them being in similar price ranges, two HomePods don’t even hold a candle to two Era 300’s. I don’t know what magic they did with those, but it is phenomenal.
The thing is I so much prefer omnidirectional sound for that space, that was my main issue with the ray is the off-axis high frequency attenuation.

not to mention you could buy almost 6 homepod minis compared to a single era 300.

not sure why it's even a comparison.
for $500 you can get better speakers than an era 300.

Sonos seemed to assume that people only use streaming services while I suspect a lot of their users have their own local music collections of purchased downloads and ripped CDs (remember those…).

The new app didn’t even allow people to search a local music collection.

A great opportunity for Apple. Using AirPlay2 Sonos speakers, Apple Music, solves the problems Sonos is having. Works great and an added bonus, integrates Apple, Bose, any AirPlay2 speskers to the listening home. Something Sonos does not do. Sonos makes great speaker hardware. Buy their hardware, use Apple Music to make it work. Apple Ad, welcome to Apple Sonos users. Exactly what I have done.
Yep, exactly this. I used to use the Sonos app until the new version broke everything. I then opted to use Apple Music and Airplay, and things are so much better for me now. No skipping of tracks, Lock Screen controls, physical volume controls on the iPhone, the list goes on and on :)

This is how I roll too. Airplay from ATV to beam.

I think we all knew this was coming. I'd rather a company walk something like this back than just stick to the trash update they've put out there.

That's a question many of us have. I've always believed (sometimes to my own misfortune) that haste makes waste. The faster something is created, the lower the quality.

Sonos laying off 100 people amid expensive app problems

I posted this exact article earlier in this thread, with words.

Sooooo, no then?

I wonder what the criteria for selecting non-Apple tech stories is. Seems it might be whatever the admins find personally relevant.
They are speakers that require an app to use. This app is available in the Apple App Store. The app ‘update’ went bad, and lots of Sonos owners are also Apple device owners.

If you really can’t see the relationship… don’t know what to tell ya.

Full disclosure (don’t get too excited) I don’t own any Sonos products and have never used either app.

have a few friends who all had roughly Half a dozen Sonos products each... all of us have moved onto other systems already. you done messed up a-a-ron!

I am serious. I don't every use their app, so I'm not seeking information out, nor do I read this site regularly.
Thats why news is broadcast.

Learning about information you didnt seek out, is kind of the whole mission of 'news' and news articles.

I hadn't seen any of the criticisms or problems, just asking for examples politely. Kinda the opposite of what your "mission" is: Add nothing, and be a dick.

New article out today.
TLDR: sonos updated their backend and now cant go back to supporting old app. new app stays.

protip; dont buy 'cloud' speakers that require an app or vendor backend to use.

This is my point: I asked a question on here, and someone could have said "detection issues, grouping problems, playback failures after managing speakers via the app" but I should just go search for your insights after the snark when you're perfectly fine to offer a quick summary of the new article? Oh man COUNT ME IN.
