I'm beginning to think this thread is 90% trolls... and honestly... why are people still saying there's no release date? It's coming Holiday 2013. Quit asking.

exactly. This is why iOS is always smooth animations and android is jerky even on the latest and greatest hardware

Since "upgrading" to iOS 6.x I find that the iPad 3 animations are quite jerky as well. Since Jobs departed and Apple lost its obsessive, visionary, quality guy to a manager (Cook), the programmers at Apple have gotten sloppy and lazy. The new App Store is a prime example of how Apple took a good thing and made it terrible.

Oh dear lord, for the 800th time, it will be released before Christmas, as was stated in the press conference, which apparently almost nobody in here watched.

They said the same before the PS3 launch and it shipped the following Easter.

They said the same before the PS Vita launch and it shipped the following Feb.

Spot a pattern emerging? Heaven forbid we should remain a little sceptical based on past performance of releasing products many months after the planned date.

----------

And have to share the limelight with Microsoft and Nintendo?

Well that's exactly what they are going to have to do anyway if like you say they will make the formal show and tell at E3. All they've done is given their competitors a heads up as to what is coming down the track. Microsoft and Nintendo must be pouring over the details as we speak.

It was released on November 11, 2006 in the US (its primary market).

They said the same before the PS Vita launch and it shipped the following Feb.

It was released on December 17, 2011 in Japan, with announced released dates of February subsequently.

In the market where Sony makes the vast majority of its money, they have stuck to their announced retail dates. I think you're faulting Sony for announcing the release date for US retailers and thinking European retailers are sticking to those dates, as well.

You don't get it. If Apple announces something, it will be on the shelves within a week or two. That's the model companies should be required to follow. Sony clearly should have told us everything and had in available to purchase tomorrow. They shouldn't have used an exclusive press event to freely advertise their new system for their obvious year-long hype machine.

For those asking why no console was showing. That's because Sony advertised the event as 'The Future Of Playstation', it is ONLY the media and the public that assumed a new console would be shown.
No Sony only showed the future of the Playstation platform, the games, the network, the operating system features, how the Playstation platform will span across the Vita and tablets and smartphones.

Sure it announced the tech specs of the PS4 etc but it didn't have to.

And besides they may not even have the final design yet, they could still be choosing between the final two.

It's so mind blowing if they actually showed you the console your head would explode. This was like calling a press conference about a car and showing you the steering wheel and bragging about how great it is going to be to drive, but no car.

they're taking a leaf out of Apple's books. make an awesome ecosystem first so when the thing launches, it'll have the support of developers from day 1.

iOS is released/shown/beta'd before the new iphone.

In the same way, they're telling developers about the engine side of things. specs, controllers, extra inputs. that way when they finally unveil the playstation, developers are prepared and have a head start and consumers benefit earlier

the console wars is now an ecosystem war.

this is in contrast to past releases where only first party studios had games out in the crucial first 6 months.

You're obviously the one that doesn't get it. This is all part of their marketing strategy. Again... E3.

$99 compared to $300 +, depending on the model. Bad comparison.
I wasn't directly comparing the two. I'm just comparing the sales figures. What I was getting at is that Apple TV's volume is comparable right now and they don't even have gaming capability...YET. If and when they do, Apple TV will explode.

Games. Games. Games. Games. Games.

If a console doesn't have the games, it won't sell. Content is key. That's why Blu-Ray won over HD-DVD. That's why DVD won over Betamax. That's why Dreamcast pushed SEGA into software development only.

I just can't believe that iOS games will eventually lead to the downfall of consoles that let you play the latest versions Mario, Call of Duty, GTA, Red Dead Redemption, Resident Evil, Madden, Halo, Left 4 Dead, MLB The Show, etc...

If Capcom, EA, ActiVision, and other major game developers make comparative software for the Apple TV/console, then we could see a potential industry domination, but iOS games aren't enough. And if it is, Apple will have done an incredible disservice to quality in the industry, and we, the consumers, are the losers.
I don't think Apple's hardware will rival the console makers - Sony/MS/Nintendo (SMN) - anytime soon. Maybe never. BUT, I don't think they need to. My opinion is that the majority of people who buy consoles *aren't* hardcore gamers. Here's my reasoning:

I think we can deduce this by looking at a popular console exclusive game like Halo 3. It's the best selling game on the XBox 360, and it's been on sale for 5 1/2 years now. The cumulative worldwide sales is just over 11 million. Cumulative sales for the XBox 360 just hit 76 million. Let's say the Halo 3 buyers are all hardcore gamers (probably not all of them are - since Halo 3 was packaged with quite a few XBox's as well). That would suggest that less than 1/7 of all XBox 360 buyers are hardcore gamers. Let's be generously conservative though and say that 1/4 of all XBox 360 owners are hardcore gamers and will buy the next XBox 360 no matter what. That would mean there are 57 million XBox owners who could be swayed to forego the next console if a $99 Apple TV could fulfill basic gaming needs like Fruit Ninja, or have yoga or Nike workout type "games" that don't need a console's graphic power.

The new consoles would have to provide something so above and beyond the current consoles in terms of gameplay or story that people would feel compelled to pay the $300 + $40-60 games. The novelty of the Wii controller, Sony Move, and Kinect has worn off. Increased realism in FPS isn't making them any more enjoyable. Just look at the titles available for consoles. MOST of them don't need a console's graphics power. So why would you buy a $300 console to play them? Remember that it took a damn long time for the PS3 to outsell the PS2 and spec-wise, it was considerably better. How much better can the eye-candy be for the PS4? Will it be so mind-blowing that it can get all 77 million buyers to upgrade again? I highly doubt it.

The way I see this current argument is the same one that Blu-Ray owners made about 4-5 years ago. A lot of them insisted that Blu-Ray would win because it was the best video/audio quality spec-wise. I was among the people who thought that while Blu-Ray would remain a viable medium, streaming would overtake it. The reasoning is simple: the vast majority of consumers are looking for good enough, not the best. Compressed video streaming at 1080P is good enough and conveniences outweigh any decrease in video quality. Blu-Ray has never surpassed DVD in cumulative sales and has already long been outsold by iTunes movies. Why? They're *good enough*. Blu-Ray is not dead yet, but it's never going to surpass streaming/downloads.

Likewise, gaming on an Apple TV may not surpass any gaming console based on specs, but the convenience and savings of downloading a game that costs less than $10 will crush the console makers. I think that will have the added effect of driving the big game makers to divert more resources towards developing games for the Apple TV.

I wouldn't worry to much if you're a hardcore gamer. I think the big titles will always be made because they sell so well. On the plus side, there might be less crap game titles produced for the consoles too. But no console will ever sell as much as the current crop of consoles have again, and Apple TV will outsell the consoles by an order of magnitude.

I'd love to see all the designs they considered ...

"OK, show me the designs"

"Yes, well, we have this retro styled approach, it's 50 lbs, stands 5 feet tall on adjustable legs, and the center section is clear and illuminated with neon lights. It invokes the classic pinball design since that's making a comeback"

"Umm, the other one?"

"It's a 1" black cube"

Erm? The Watch Dogs gameplay was new, the Destiny gameplay was new, the Killzone gameplay was new, the Infamous video was new.. and so on and on.

And just WHO is splashed across all the tech news websites and in mainstream front page news articles today? Sony and the PS4, you are even commenting about it on a totally 100% Apple rumours website!
So whilst you believe it to be a flop, it wasn't as Sony has most certainly got the media attention it wants, right now it's got the same as Apple did when it launched the iPhone.

Watchdog is not exclusive
Killzone looks boring and the storylines of the previous ones were worse then all the crappy american action movies put together)
Destiny is not exclusive

I'm 30 years old. I hate brainless shooters like Killzone, COD etc. I want to learn something or at least have a good story. If I'm buying the PS I want exclusive titles like Uncharted.

The PS3 had many games during the presentation. 70% got canceled.
This PS4 got less games during the presentation. What should we be hyped about?

If I had a quarter for every time someone went off on a gripe spree because Macrumors had the audacity to post something besides Mac and iOS news...

...I'd easily have enough to fill a sock, which I could then use to smack upside their head for being so pointlessly whiny.

But even if it IS Mac or iOS news, if it doesn't directly pertain to THEM, then "why is this here?" is posted. An App they don't care for, an accessory they won't use, a product they don't wish to own. MacRumors posts half a dozen stories on a BUSY day, is it really that hard to skim over the uninteresting ones?

Sony clearly should have told us everything and had in available to purchase tomorrow. They shouldn't have used an exclusive press event to freely advertise their new system for their obvious year-long hype machine.

That's pretty normal for most companies. Apple fits a different mold. Lots of companies announce things at trade shows (like E3 or CES) sometimes YEARS before they actually get released. They also don't have the same secrecy that Apple does. Apple actually used to do the same thing, but when Steve Jobs founded NeXT he realized that people weren't buying, so he figured by keeping things under wraps and announcing things just before launch, he could create a lot more excitement about his products AND not be quickly beat-to-the-punch by competitors (by releasing specs for a 6-month-away launch, and having someone build something with better specs in 5 months). He took that same philosophy to Apple.

Lots of companies have also adopted that philosophy, but obviously not Sony. And why 'required', does it really harm anyone if Sony announces something a year early? I agree, it's super annoying to see things (like thunderbolt external GPU's for example) which are announced repeatedly for years and years and never released, or finally released but we've all moved on to something better by now. But that's their prerogative and if they choose to do it that way and don't sell anything, well.. that's capitalism! And if they cry wolf enough, the press will stop coming. Let them reap what they will sow. It doesn't hurt you or the products you already use if a company tries to hype up their product.

That's exactly why they announced it before the next Xbox. To tie in people who went 360.

PS3 had better exclusive titles (thats why I always bought Sony consoles) but all the 3th party games looked better on the Xbox360. The exclusive titels where at a minimum compared to the PS1 and PS2.

tie them in how? PS4 is not on sale and MS is going to announce their new console soon

half of sony's announcement seemed t be cool features that they are still working on

but the blood is more realistic on PS4

It comes out this Christmas season, they showed games being manipulated by a real person.
If this was an Apple event, with what was shown people would be fawning all over it. I would be surprised if Apple had big games ready to go with how they don't send out development hardware.

if this was an apple event we would see real hardware on stage, pricing, and real cloud features announced with a real date, at least for beta access. if new apple hardware came out there would be updated versions of applications the next week

we saw some videos, gameplay on a dev system and a couple of me too games. did the games even have any new features? or is the usual move straight, take cover and shoot everyone?

So when you said it's nothing we haven't seen before you meant the gameplay. Well I DO like COD and I'm older then you, I don't find it brainless, I find it enjoyable. Thankfully games are different enough to appeal to my tastes and yours.
And yes I knew Destiny and Watch Dogs were not platform exclusive, don't see what it has to do with your point?

I'm sure the PS4 will have the same exclusives as the PS3. Just because they haven't been announced yet doesn't mean they won't be made for the system.

Yeaaaahhhhhhh but Apple would replace the product in the next 6 to 12 months. Games consoles haven't been replaced for SIX YEARS! So they are hardly going to do a rush job and follow the business plan of a mobile phone or tablet product are they?
Then again the Mac Pro hadn't received an update for a long time and Apple stated last year a new one would be coming this year.

only reason sony announced now is because the WII U is not selling. sales are less than the Wii at the same time after release. tell everyone PS4 is coming so no one buys a wii u for the non nintendo games.

Wait, I just stumbled upon the second screen talk later on. Remember when Nintendo did this with the Gameboy Advance and Gamecube? Probably not since it never took off but if you did it was awesome.

I am probably not that excited for it since I do not want to have to lug or buy another device to play games. Though mobile gaming is dead to me.
