I like some of the handheld games on iOS. But comparing them with multimillion dollar productions for consoles just shows that some have no clue whatsoever what they are talking about! Its ridiculous. Like comparing TV shows with movies. Like movies, console and pc games are a different breed entirely!

Yes and No

I wonder if I will be able to play my PS3 games on the new PS4..?

It sounds like the PS4 will be cloud based thus you play your games via the cloud thus no disks only digital files - Yes some say u can play PS2 games even but you have to rebuy them in digital form - I bet there is no optical drive at all only a flash memory hard drive in a box about the size of a mac mini. I can see the next xbox without a optical drive as well. Xbox has been working toward that trend the past few years thus no used games for either system - you want it you have to purchase it online then download it to your PS4 or Xbox to play it. I am taking you are gonna need a super fast internet for this to work. IF the cloud or your internet goes down it renders the box useless as you can not play any games. THe future is virtual gaming no more disks no more files just playing the game online while a cloud service holds your stats. Why PS4 did not show the hardware is because they did not want a huge backlash from the public they want to keep them guessing. BUt my bet it will be digital streaming of games only.

So why aren't they already? The big hitters for iOS are tiny minigames. They're not from Konami, Capcom, Sega, Bungie, Valve.

Because console style games don't sell well in the iOS market. If they did we would see more of them.

Maybe because they finally realized they're not the king of electronics anymore. There are 400 million iOS devices in the wild, and probably as many or more Android devices - there are only ~75 million PS3s. SONY needs to play ball with the customer in order to succeed.

Still, they'll have their share of proprietary hardware. By the looks of it, the I/O headset port on their new controller is proprietary.

While I am glad they went with x86 platform, the question of pricing remains. Some speculate that the PS4 will be as much as $999 for the top-ens SKU which would be just ridiculous in our day and age.

I'm almost 100% certain it won't be $999. NOBODY would bother buying a game console for $999, I don't care how great it is. A price that high wouldn't make sense. Console gaming is slowly becoming less popular. Since when was raising the price by almost 4x a smart thing? If the console isn't around $200-$400, they may as well give Microsoft the gold medals now.

It has a bluray drive...

It has a bluray and cd-rom drive in it.

What is all this hate for PlayStation 4 about? There were a handful of games showed (including Killzone, Driveclub, Infamous and The Witness) and the console has some real specs (8 GB of RAM versus 256 MB of today)!

Seriously, this is probably the best you can get while keeping the price down (talking about price; remember how much the PS3 went for when it first came out? And you are complaining about a better machine at a higher price?).

PlayStation 4 is also supposed to come with a Kinect inspired accessory that will (based on the amount of development time) blow the Kinect out of the water.

And remember the guarantee of games. There will be at least 5 years of games for the PS4, and that's not too shabby.

And for you who keeps preaching about Apple creating the ultimate console: C'mon, man. Seriously.:apple:

8 cores will be outdated in a year or so as high end computers are trending to the 12 and 18 core or more in the next couple years

This matters not in the short term as very few applications/games can utilise multi cores well or even at all.

Dear Sony I haven't forgot about the PS Vita promise of using my UMD games on my vita or screwing me with your propitiatory memory chip, I haven't forgot how I've been tricked me into believing ps2 games would work and now no ps3 games on the ps4?!

I know at some point you have to leave old tech behind. But you haven't kept up with your old promises.

I'm going to wait and see what is really offered in realize day.

Very Apple-esque

The presentation made one thing clear to me - Sony is taking some big cues from Apple as far as their direction for PS4.

They are pushing the 'it just works' philosophy. Ecosystem is something Sony has always been interested in, but they seem to be actually making it happen with the proper infrastructure and partnership alliances needed.

Simplification seems to be at the forefront of their thinking here too. The idea that you can just push a button to pick continue playing a game with no wait time is pretty significant.

Apple has always been about cutting down technology barriers and hurdles so that their users can get right to the functionality that's important to them. Sony is recognizing that the painful wait times for boot up of games is something that should be in the past - and the PS4 seems to be all about that.

By creating a development system that developers seem to like and gives access to a number of important tools, that's what makes it easy for the good content to make it to the platform. That was a key point repeated throughout. If Ballmer were there is 'developers developers!' dance would have been somewhat relevant. Sony GETS it - they were seriously stung by the slow uptake for the PS3 on launch. They are fostering huge relationships to ensure that the launch window is front loaded with compelling titles.

Bungie writing for the PS4 - and what they are working on looks like a winner. This is something no one would have predicted back in the heyday of Halo.

I'm pretty jazzed about this actually.

So what did they actually announce?

- They don't let us see it, apart from the controller.
- No release date.
- No Price.

At least when Apple announces something you get to see it, know the cost and a release date... and it's not 6 months in the future before we get them.

Games. Games. Games. Which is funny, because that would seemingly be the most important thing on a GAMING console.

1. It won't look like crap (just look at the last two for proof)
2. It's releasing holiday 2013 (which implies November)
3. I agree. Rumor says $429 is price.

And don't forget, when Apple announced the original iPhone, it was about 6 months before the iPhone shipped.

Quick Questions:

I play one, maybe two games a year, and so far they have been available for PS3 and XBox 360. So the real questions I have:

1. Is it quieter?
2. If I want to watch Netflix and there is an update, do I have to jump though their hoops or can I delay the update until I am done watching?

Also...

"The long-term goal of PS4 is to reduce download times of digital titles to zero: if the system knows enough about a player to predict the next game they will purchase, then that game can be loaded and ready to go before they even click the "buy" button."

My ISP will love that.

Just in Apples walled garden. ;)

So the PS4 will be a social/sharing/facebook device. But will it be able to play games? Or doesn't this matter anymore?

Didn't you see the gameplay demos for Killzone, Infamous, Driveclub, Knack, The Witness, Deep Down, Watchdogs and Destiny?
They showed a lot. The only thing they didn't show was the console itself (but it's a games system, not an art installation).

The second screen iPhone app opens up so many possibilities.

007 games could have M pop up on the screen giving you orders.

Detective games could have informants "call" or "text" you on the phone giving you tips to help you in game.

CoD/Battlefield games could come with a wrist adapter for your iPhone and you can use it as a wrist mounted computer to call down artillery or check maps etc.

Good times to be a gamer. :D

hype? it mostly pissed everyone off.

sony fail memes already start to appear everywhere ^^

Really? What did they do wrong? From my POV (non-biased gamer, interested in modern tech, developer) I didn't see anything bad. They hit all the right notes. My Twitter feed was on fire with positive comments, even from Nintendo and Microsoft developers.

Horrible flashbacks of GTA IV! Can you imagine Roman phoning you on your actual phone?
(That actually sounds kinda fun. I hope it would have voice recognition so I could tell him to go **** himself :))
Good times to be a gamer. :D
Oh my yes. I can't wait to see what Microsoft pulls out of their bag now. They're going to have to do something great to compete with that, and drop their plans to block second hand games now that Sony announced they won't block them!
