This was like calling a press conference about a car and showing you the steering wheel and bragging about how great it is going to be to drive, but no car.

Or like anouncing a revolutionary Mac Pro for some time next [this] year :D

I play one, maybe two games a year, and so far they have been available for PS3 and XBox 360. So the real questions I have:

1. Is it quieter?
2. If I want to watch Netflix and there is an update, do I have to jump though their hoops or can I delay the update until I am done watching?

Also...

"The long-term goal of PS4 is to reduce download times of digital titles to zero: if the system knows enough about a player to predict the next game they will purchase, then that game can be loaded and ready to go before they even click the "buy" button."

My ISP will love that.

Yeah, we fire ours up as a game console for the latest Silent Hill like every 12+ months, then it gets relegated to a BR player (though it's still a very good one), and it used to be our go to device for Netflix, but recently we've using the Apple TV more (we do use the PS3 for the occasional Amazon VOD).

Definitely agree that the UI/UX on the media console can get a little clunky with the overlapping logins (Sony vs. the other service), and for a while, the seemingly constant Netflix updates.

Predictive downloads? Er, yikes, I'd hope that's an configurable option! I do like the idea of fetching game data on the fly, with some level of predictiveness, you know like queue up the entire next level based on your current path/logic/decisions, etc.

It sounds like the PS4 will be cloud based thus you play your games via the cloud thus no disks only digital files - Yes some say u can play PS2 games even but you have to rebuy them in digital form - I bet there is no optical drive at all only a flash memory hard drive in a box about the size of a mac mini. I can see the next xbox without a optical drive as well. Xbox has been working toward that trend the past few years thus no used games for either system - you want it you have to purchase it online then download it to your PS4 or Xbox to play it. I am taking you are gonna need a super fast internet for this to work. IF the cloud or your internet goes down it renders the box useless as you can not play any games. THe future is virtual gaming no more disks no more files just playing the game online while a cloud service holds your stats. Why PS4 did not show the hardware is because they did not want a huge backlash from the public they want to keep them guessing. BUt my bet it will be digital streaming of games only.

PS4 games will be run natively on the hardware (otherwise it wouldn't need all that fancy hardware) but PS3 games will be cloud-based like OnLive.

Everybody will reach their bandwidth caps much more quickly!

kinda surprised as the days of disk media are about dead - as the trend is toward digital.

really?

at 50GB per game how many can you keep on the hard drive? along with the other crap that people will have.

and you can't resell digital copies of games

Haha, Apple's thunder in the tech news world is going to be removed for the rest of the year now, along with everyone else. Sorry but new generation games consoles don't happen every year. Expect the hype to get to obscene levels towards the end of the year, and as for E3, Apple should just not announce anything at that time.

Do you really think most people have internet fast enough to download retail games in the 20-40GB range? Absolutely no chance! There is no way in hell that physical media is disappearing in consoles. Maybe digital data is sufficient for crappy iPhone games, but not for fully fledged console games.

Worst console presentation EVER!!!! This is going to be a piece of cake for Microsoft.

Why would you let developers come on stage and share videos that everybody already saw???
Thats like inviting someone with a dagger on your birthday and let him stick it between your bones.

Game Over.

It was absolutely clear that the developers where not ready to show the goods. How could Sony be so blind?

Erm? The Watch Dogs gameplay was new, the Destiny gameplay was new, the Killzone gameplay was new, the Infamous video was new.. and so on and on.

And just WHO is splashed across all the tech news websites and in mainstream front page news articles today? Sony and the PS4, you are even commenting about it on a totally 100% Apple rumours website!
So whilst you believe it to be a flop, it wasn't as Sony has most certainly got the media attention it wants, right now it's got the same as Apple did when it launched the iPhone.

Really? What did they do wrong? From my POV (non-biased gamer, interested in modern tech, developer) I didn't see anything bad. They hit all the right notes. My Twitter feed was on fire with positive comments, even from Nintendo and Microsoft developers.

german newspaper summed it up nicely:

Highlights of the night

It'll be called the ... Playstation 4 - Unbelievable
It'll play games and will be connected to the internet - Revolutionary
The games are looking better than ever before - no shiat sherlock
Surprise Surprise - It'll have a controller!

Questions "answered":

Release date: by the end of the year ... somewhere in the world
What can it do? more than all the others
How much will it cost? - Depending on the region €, Yen $
What games? many and they'll look stunning (again, no shiat)

I'm not saying that the PS4 is gonna be horrible but this presentation was ridiculous and pointless and it seemed like they arent even sure where they're going with it yet. Right, they showed game "demos" for over an hour but who knows if it'll actually end up looking like this. I bet most of those were simply videos put together to show what it "could" be capable of

and lol at the Windows 8 UI

I have to believe console companies are a little hesitant to abandon disc media for fear of alienating the people who only buy used games.

Is it just me or am I the only one thinking, hmmm, it has an intel processor, how hard will it be to install Windows on it and have a kick ass gaming machine for relatively cheap.

All a bit meh really.. What does everyone else think?

Australia really needs to step up their broadband with everything going to the cloud / streaming..

Yeah, same impression here. To the tech buzzword: "Vapourware" sprung to mind. All we got to see was a controller and a motion sensor.

- no price
- no release date
- no real demo's of how the controller interacts with an actual live game
- no real gameplay demo ... just pre-recorded pieces
- lack of information - ie. will it play old games? what's the minimum broadband speed needed?

If it were an Apple product we'd be able see hands on demos of it after the presentation and most likely buy it in 28 days.

If that's a nice summary I weep for German journalism. Of course the next console will be connected to the internet, are they also surprised it has video output?
What evidence is there the footage was pre-rendered? Do you know how powerful PC and next-gen hardware is? Running a game with that level of visual fidelity at 1080p isn't a problem. My 2010 iMac is running games (albeit from 2010) in 1440p, something as focussed and forward thinking as a console will be running those PS4 demos just fine. There was plenty of real-time manipulation to show how most of those videos weren't just pre-rendered.

I'm still not seeing the "fail" here. Quite the opposite, the game player in me is very excited for this machine and it seems the general consensus is they had a very good press event.

A million percent it IS only YOU thinking that because it has an AMD SOC in it :D

Oh, AMD, yuck. I thought the presentation said Intel, but after thinking about it I think it said x86. Even so, I'm sure it can be made to run a different OS . . . wonder how long it will take to hack. :D

that was sarcasm on their part and just pointing out the "highlights" they where so proud of during the presentation

"I’d like to be watching this on my television, while hooked onto my mobile device, which is being controlled by my tablet device, which is hooked into my oven, all while sitting in my refrigerator.”

Its a good thing that device designers don't listen to you, or they'd be making devices for which there is no addressable market above one person.

Two-display systems, however...

Give me a price, and a date and Infamous Second son and take my money...

but im not buying a Vita,

Wish they would have actually showed the console. Kind of a non event for me.

Come back when you actually have a picture of the thing your selling and how much.

It comes out this Christmas season, they showed games being manipulated by a real person.
If this was an Apple event, with what was shown people would be fawning all over it. I would be surprised if Apple had big games ready to go with how they don't send out development hardware.

It's so mind blowing if they actually showed you the console your head would explode. This was like calling a press conference about a car and showing you the steering wheel and bragging about how great it is going to be to drive, but no car.
Well, maybe this event was to get developers interested, not the consuming public as much, sort of like iOS preview events.

So....they show no actual new product, give no release date and no indication of what the price is going to be. And everyone is excited.

Um....ok

I think this is a little like the taking my talents to miami speech. The interview was not really needed but its going to be good stuff and people are going to like it so I dont know why everyone is hating so hard. PS3 > Wii and about the same as xbox360. I assume the PS4 will be the same deal.
