Sony today confirmed that it is working on creating more than five smartphone games for iOS and Android, all expected to launch before March 2018 (via CNBC). The games will be created through Sony's ForwardWorks subsidiary, which it formed earlier in March of this year as a way to craft "full-fledged game titles" for smartphones.

At the time of that announcement, the company hadn't detailed the launch plan, or specified how many games it wanted to create, so today marks the first time it talks about its smartphone gaming plans since then. Known in March and reiterated today, the Sony iOS and Android games will first hit Japan and other Asian countries, with the expectation being that each game will then slowly rollout wider after the initial release.

Despite consistently strong sales figures for its PlayStation 4 system, the company's aim at Japan is an attempt to battle low console sales in a country where users are more likely to spend their time picking up mobile and smartphone games rather than sit in front of a home console system.
Sony has still yet to confirm which games and franchises might receive the smartphone treatment, but any of its first party franchises published under Sony Interactive Entertainment -- Uncharted, Sly Cooper, Ratchet & Clank, God of War -- could be fair game. Although the company said that the experiences would be "full-fledged" games, it's likely Sony will take Nintendo's approach and optimize each for smartphones, like the latter company is doing in partnership with Apple for the endless runner Super Mario Run.

Analyst Serkan Toto mentioned that since Sony's intellectual properties aren't as recognizable as Nintendo's, the company's chance for failure might be higher.
In the same vein of Sony's announcement, back in May of 2015 Nintendo revealed that the company was working on 5 smartphone games, in partnership with DeNA, with an end-goal to launch all of them by March 2017. The first was the quickly abandoned Miitomo, followed this December by Super Mario Run.

Animal Crossing and Fire Emblem were originally planned to launch this fall, but Nintendo pushed their debut back to 2017 so as not to overcrowd the end of the year and keep the spotlight on Mario. That still leaves one unannounced Nintendo mobile title to launch before the end of Nintendo's fiscal year -- March 31, 2017 -- if the company is to keep to its original promise of five smartphone games by March 2017.

When I read the title I thought "game-plan" as one word, and therefor read it as "Sony details smartphone ...." thinking Sony is joining the smartphone market. But it is their smartphone-plan for .. sony games..

I've been waiting 5 years for ARM chips to get where they are today (on par with i5 dual cores for **** sake!), and we are still waiting on the A10X to come along and be even faster. This is a game Apple has already won, and I'm so happy to see proper games and software come to this platform!

If the last Nintendo game isn't Zelda I'll be very sad.

It's probably because I am Dutch :p Maybe it's because there's a phrase called "game-plan" like.. 'Sony's game-plan to join the mobile market is hilarious.'

Yeah, it's a phrase we Americans use too and I always associate with that Disney movie with The Rock.

God of War is a 3D platformer of guitar hero. It plays like it was designed for mobile. Loved that series, but my buttons didn't.

It's really great that these companies are finally opening up their titles to iOS and Android, but I really do hope the same will be true for tvOS as well. As Apple's A series processors become stonger, console quality gaming will become a reality on the big screen pretty soon, and now that games are no longer required to support the Siri remote, more complex, console like games are a possibility. Eventually, with great gaming and all the different streaming and entertainment apps, Apple TV will become the utimate livingroom entertainment machine. I can't wait for AppleTV 5 to come out! :)

Baby steps :) A lot of apps on the iPhone are still not available on the iPad, nor do they support the watch etc. They don't always have to support it, but darn sure would be nice :) Adding the tv experience to it could really be a huge boost to a game company as they will be ahead of others. I hope Sony recognizes this.

That will never happen. They aren't going to port existing games. They are going to create mobile games. If anything you may get a puzzle game for Zelda and a shooter on rails as metal gear solid.

It will be more or less the same as other racing games on the App Store. You can't experience real racing mechanics on a phone w a small screen and current input methods. Controllers are not great, just Ok. (Owner of GT 5 GT 6 and a mfi controller)

Sony is already on the App Store and has games like an uncharted one and others. My guess is the news means putting all the money they would have invested in the vita games toward mobile devices. :(
What's interesting about this news is that the vita is still selling well on Japan which is why they keep releasing games over there. With the new hack though piracy is at its highest point.

Bring on God of War and Ratchet and Clank mobile games.

A Mortal Kombat game like Shaolin Monks would be awesome too.

More like bandicoot see what plumber do. And plumber picked it up from a hedgehog.

Meanwhile Microsoft made Halo stickers for no real reason. Kind of seems like a desperate cry for attention like "hey iOS, we're still cool too, right?" (gentle chat bubble effect)

Yeah, it's been years since I played Zelda on a portable console (never bought the 3DS) and I miss it. My only concern are the controls and how much I'll miss physical buttons. As for Sony, after their portable console failures, this should be a good thing for them...hopefully.

2018, the year TSMC fabricates 7nm chips. Would surpass the present consoles I guess with Metal. So, Sony would simply port their console games, it seems.

As long as we don't have proper controllers and input/output variety GPU/CPU power is worth nothing....

When I can play overwatch via an iPad (with keyboard/mouse, not console-controller-kid-crap) we are there.

You mean you are there. MartianAppleGuy is correct Apple has won mobile. First Nintendo and now Sony are waving the white flags.

Apple has won nothing. A side scroller Mario? Please...

The ATV4 was a failure too (so far).
