I kinda like Sony, they give something on quality hardware. If i were to choose a PC notebook id choose a Vaio.

So I expect a good quality tablet from them. They have some pretty sick screens in really smalll laptops, so maybe there will be a sick screen in their tablet too? Anyways, more competition is good.

agreed on all points. though not a fan of the ps3 - sony's laptop offerings are in the same zip code as apple hardware, but not killers yet.

competition will only help the consumer.

I second that motion. I loaned my mom my ATV2 to see if she likes it, so the PS3 is my Netflix now. Why the #$%& is it necessary that you sign into Playstation Network to use Netflix?

You don't actually have to. When it asks you, you try and it'll obviously fail. Press O and Netflix will continue signing in. It'll ask you once more to login to PSN, do the same thing thing again and Netflix will work, no issues.

Really? I went through the motions about three times last night and it ended with an error message that I think said "A connection to the Playstation Network is required to use Netflix." I upgraded my software last week..maybe that's new?

EDIT: Sony says the curved design of the S1 creates a "sense of lightness" which is good for long periods of use.

I hope that sense of lightness is because its ACTUALLY lighter not because it looks lighter.

Well I think the point is that when you hold it from the buldge side the whole tablet feels lighter due to less torque. It is simple physics that the farther mass is from the center point the heavier it feels. Ex: hold a 3 pound rock in one hand. Now tie it to the end of a ruler and hold the opposite end of the ruler with the rock about a foot away from your hand. It will feel heavier.

I applaud Sony on creating unique designs. It will be interesting to see how things pan out

I bet Sony's tablet can at least connect to WiFi :D and come with email, contacts, and calendar.

But, who we kidding. An Etch 'n' Sketch could be out the BlackBerry PlayBook.

I know people have got it in for the playbook here, but seeing it on engadget yesterday I did think it had some clever points, and how come it can output hd movie to a tv screen and play a car racing game all at the same time?

I do believe I am all up to date. You just have to let it try and sign in and when it fails press O.

That's actually not that far from the truth probably.

Money spent on making them look good on the case outside, with mediocre components inside.

i also can confirm that you don't need PSN to use Netflix.. just try to log in when PSN asks you to.. but then cancel out after.

I've still been able to use Netflix during the PSN outage, just hit "OK" to all the error prompts about not being able to sign it and it still brings you to the Netflix menu. At least, it did for me.

I see the Asus Transformer has just launched in the US and Amazon sold out within minutes.

Seems like a lot of interest in this product.

Certainly seems to have hit a sweet spot on price and specs and is the model everyone is going to have to aim for if they wish to compete.
:)

Yes, I just read the reviews at Anandtech and Engadget and it looks very impressive indeed. I'm actually considering whether I want to keep my iPad or perhaps jump to a MacBook Air when they next get refreshed. Something like the Transformer (15 hour battery life when docked!) sounds like it could be a very interesting third option.

Fall 2011: 4 - 6 months away

Looks interesting, but the concept design doesn't catch my attention.
Also, Sony is known for making things their way, like using MemoryStick, with recently seems to be changing for the more standard SD Card.
We'll just have to wait and see.
I don't like the folding version at all. Who wants to read a document split in the middle? for that matter, I would just get a Nintendo 3DS :D
I also wonder what else will come out by the time these Sony Tablets are released.

Why can't manufacturers just announce their products when they are going to release it? They create a hype, then you have to wait 6 months for it to become a reality, if it ever becomes a reality. Did you notice the "Design is subject to change" disclaimer? This means they don't even have a final design on it!
I don't think I'll get one of these units, that will later become abandoned by Sony. I've learned my lesson based on past experience with their products.

Annoying, but part of DNAS.

Good news is Netflix DNAS is optional. Go ahead and attempt to sign in. Press cancel the second time. Then sign in again to get the "unavailable" message. Then you'll be able to proceed to the Netflix home screen.

How many did they sell?

It's so you won't buy an iPad. They want you to wait for their product.

I don't like the clamshell model, I just don't see that form factor being particularly enjoyable or useful, but i think it has a better chance of succeeding then the standard looking tablet.

I'm not convinced another 10" tablet can come and succeed alongside (or in place of) the ipad and ipad 2, at least not right away. The ipad 2 isn't perfect and other devices can come along with better specs, but the ipad has the market locked down right now. I think the hardware is less important right now, other tablets can come out with nicer screens or faster processors or more RAM, but right now it isn't translating into a better user experience.

I think Android has to mature a lot more before it can contend with iOS. 3.0 is a huge step in the right direction but it still just isn't quite there (and that is with some huge iOS problems and deficiencies).

The reason i think the clamshell has a better chance at succeeding then the standard tablet right now is it's different. I don't think it will succeed, but i think if someone is going to come into this space and succeed it has to do things differently and attack the same market in a different way. Right now, people are attacking head on with a market apple essentially created for themselves and we're seeing flop after flop. We're essentially getting the Motorola iPad and the Sony iPad, and these products simply aren't as good as the actual ipad.

I might be interested in that S2, might be more portable than my iPad, while giving more screen estate than my iPhone.

It seems Sony is secretly competing with the 3DS. I wonder if they will include a 3D screen in the final product…

Yawn @ phony SONY. They lost my respect ever since OtherOS. They are indian givers. Plus they update firmware 200 times a year.

i've heard a lot of people say that you can bypass the psn sign in on netflix if you just keep trying to start the netflix app and just cancel the psn sign in. it should work.
