The problem, at least as I appears to me, with all the non-iPad tablets, is that while they may be able to add various things to the format, they have not as yet improved on the tablet.

That said, I think that folding Sony tablet has a secondary potential, which I am glad to see. For years I have wanted to see an ebook reader that folded like a book, that could be very cool.

Well I think the point is that when you hold it from the buldge side the whole tablet feels lighter due to less torque. It is simple physics that the farther mass is from the center point the heavier it feels. Ex: hold a 3 pound rock in one hand. Now tie it to the end of a ruler and hold the opposite end of the ruler with the rock about a foot away from your hand. It will feel heavier.

I applaud Sony on creating unique designs. It will be interesting to see how things pan out

Ahhhh...makes sense.

Now im wondering if they want u to hold it from the bulge side, will it be comfortable to hold, if in fact that is what they are encouraging.

At the end of the day, its still funny looking.

I know people have got it in for the playbook here, but seeing it on engadget yesterday I did think it had some clever points, and how come it can output hd movie to a tv screen and play a car racing game all at the same time?

The Playbook is a wonderful and very powerful device. Its just that Rim has put it in position to be criticized. Releasing it without certain native clients on top of the lack of apps is just plain wierd. Its like they dont know that the first impression means a lot. What was one more month. I dont know if the iPad 2 scared them or not but putting your tablet on market now is not going to slow down sells of the iPad. They could have waited one more month and released a completed tablet. The Playbook is going to end up, when complete, a very very good tablet, minus the 7" form factor(I hate those). Last I checked, I owned a cell phone.

I think it would be comfortable. It's actually easier to grip things with a little thickness to them. Plus the tapering would only help your hold (close your thumb and fingers, see the gap? it would fit very seamlessly. kinda like notch in there)

Of course this is all assuming that you are holding in portrait. I use landscape probably 75% of the time on my iPad... BUT... whenever I am actually "holding" it up. (i.e. not in my lap, on table, on stand) I tend to hold it in portrait nearly all the time. Most likely because it FEELS lighter due to the torque issue I discussed.

So it would seem that whenever you actually hold it, it will feel lighter, but then when you lay it down, you can put it in landscape and it will even have a slight tilt to help typing. Although I think this typing benefit is very minimal, even negligable, at least when it is sitting on your lap. On a table it may give just enough incline to be useful

It hasn't actually "appeared" yet. In the fall, something will appear - I'll withhold judgment till it's a little closer to "appearing"

Exactly. Look at all the stupid boasts RIM was making about their Playbook before it was released. Then it finally releases it and the market laughs.

It's one thing to say what you are going to do, but it's quite another to actually back up your boasts with a production version you can buy.

Agreed. It'll all depend on how the thing actually feels in the hand. It looks slick though.

Having said that, I haven't seen its entry in the spec war all the iPad competitors are wasting their time with, either. Anyone got a source for processor, memory, or even I/O ports?
