Sony, Samsumg, MS, they are all shaking. :D Showing their roadmap right before Apple's keynote.
I definitely understand Apple's secrecy :apple:

That may be true but at least they're all trying - what are we going to get from Apple at the keynote?

"Ladies and gentleman, the new iPhone! It's a bit bigger, like all our competitors, buuuuuut it's 0.8mm thinner!!!! Thank you, thank you, no need for applause, oh go on then, we know we're great but we'll indulge you..."

:)

All these 100s upon 100s of smart watches... Why? Just because Apple was rumoured of making one.

It's either that or wait until after the keynote and have your products lost in the noise.

It still could get lost. Especially if there is a big gap to the actual launch of these killers. Which won't really be killers since they are only android compatible. They might kill the Fitbit etc but they won't take iWatch sales away from iphone users. The best they could hope for is snagging a few disgustled iphone users that aren't impressed with the new iPhone and decide to try an android phone or some of the smart phone holdouts lured by cheaper prices

----------

I seem to remember lots of people saying that the smart phone would never take off when Apple launched the original iPhone.

The smart watch will only take off if it adds something new to the mix. Eventually I can see a scenario were smart watches with phone functionality will start taking a slice of the smart phone market.

Smart phones already get crap for having 'tiny' batteries and 'tiny' screens. Unless this smart watch has some kind of kinetic or solar charging or can charge off the tiny charges in our skin and has a body like something Captain Jack Harness wears its unlikely they will hurt the phone market

They are using the the IFA 2014 conference as a springboard to announce their new product lineups which I'm sure was scheduled a long time before Apple confirmed their keynote on September 9th.

I'm sure they all suspected Apple would be releasing new products sometime in September but there's no way they would have know the exact date when they booked their places at IFA 2014.

The history is the week after Labor Day. Which is why the 9th has been rumored for a while. Even if they booked IFA a year ago any decent company knows that history

Am I missing the point, or is everyone else missing it...if this Sony 'Wrist Band' can make and receive calls without a tethered phone, just like the Samsung Gear S, then this is pretty cool (IMO).

You can leave your actual phone at home while jogging, leave your phone in the hotel safe while down in the pool, leave it at home when going surfing, etc, and you still can get calls an answer anything important that might come up right from your ultra feather weight, water-proof wrist band.

This is awesome (I must be missing something because this is huge props to Samsung and Sony).

To clarify, the phone form Samsung has built-in cellular...it makes and receives calls on its own, no bluetooth/tethered device required.

They claim 2 days battery for the Z3. I had Z1 and I really 1 day + couple of hours for sure.

Really...you would think the person familiar with the matter would know the battery life for whatever Apple will be announcing - to me that's the key - 5-10 days its a sale - otherwise forget it.

With every hardware vendor making their own Android, I can't help but to think MSFT ends up on the losing end of the stick...Android/Google is the new MSFT....abeit with less market share.

And less coherence. Google's business model for Android is entirely different from Windows... more of a platform than a product.

I really hope Apple's wearable is something special. All the junk coming from Samsung and Sony has me convinced this is a silly fad that will NEVER catch on

Define something special. Your answer is likely to be way different than many other folks.

I think the reason Samsung etc come off as junk is that they are doing too much at once. Creating a band or watch that can be a camera and a phone etc is tricky. They should have started simpler and worked up to this big thing in a version or too.

In this thought I'm not going to be shocked if the iWatch is little more than a fuelband type device with perhaps a little bit of a pebble function. And maybe some very limited controls like picking up a call or shuffling music. Both would be great for bluetooth users who would rather keep the phone in the pocket. It won't take photos or make calls on its own or any of the stuff.

Agree. Let's wait and see what the iWatch will offer.:apple:

Sony is showing life.

It almost makes you feel bad for Sony, because these are actually cool products, but you know no one is going to buy them

I know, right? I remember when good consumer electronics meant Sony. They’ve done pretty well in the video game market, the PS4 even seems to be doing well. Heck, they helped to kickstart and win the HD optical race by including BD in the PS3. Great cameras, and their high[er] end notebooks have some beautiful designs.

It's much more than that. It IS a camera, that just uses your phone for a view finder and storage. It's not for everyone, but it has some really cool features that normal cameras lack.

I totally dig on this product. I get it, it’s a little niche, but there are some really cool use cases you can’t duplicate with other gear.

History shows that Apple spends the first 20 minutes of their Keynotes BASHING the competition, then break out into 5,000 amazings + 5,000 awesomes - September 9th will be standard fare.

But there is plenty to bash with what was released before this week. They don't need to change anything to have their talking points

Marketshare is an irrelevant data point. It's analogous to saying that GM is better than BMW because the former sells more cars.

Tell that to all the stock analysts crying Apple is doomed because they now only have like 40% of the tablet market share.

"When are you coming home?" because this is what i want to be seeing on my wrist.

If this image is supposed to convince me I need a SmartWatch it is failing to do so.

Wry cynicism. I like it.

Yes, indeed it is. Google has been the Evil Empire for over a decade now and they are just now hitting their stride.

If they really want to compete with Apple, they should sell a bundle for $199:
- 1 Phablet
- 1 Smart Watch
- 1 Tablet
- 1 4K TV Set
- 1 Fridge
- 3 T-Shirts
- 1 Microwave
- 4 white Sony Stickers

Wow...what's up with the sarcasm and criticism? Are you too young to remember that Sony is actually a company that Steve Jobs admired quite a bit, both for its design language and its culture?

Why is that certain folks in this forum feel the need to bash anything that's not directly made by Apple? Perhaps a hidden inferiority complex is driving the need to criticize all non-Apple products and companies? I'd really like to know why there's so much vindictiveness.

ianKent - care to explain to me why you felt the need to "hate" on Sony? Or maybe you were just trying to be funny?

Would be fun if Apple revealed iGlasses on Wednesday, when all the other are betting on watches ;)

i wouldnt wear one either way but i am curious to see what apple has in store for use. remember how people thought a smartphone should look like before the introduction of the first iPhone? i kinda hope history repeats itself with the copycats suddenly adapting to the "idea" a few months later

I agree, although I feel it's wishful thinking.

Steve's dead. The revolution is over. I fear we will get the iOS 7 of watches instead of something truly extraordinary.

That said, I like(d) Apple so much I am still hanging on to the irrational hope we'll see something awesome come the 9th. :p

If Apple includes cellular into the iWatch, I hope they can innovate more than Samsung by 'spreading' the cellular, wi-fi, gps and battery components around the wrist band, so as to not embed everything directly below the screen like Samsung has done wight he Gear S. This could keep the screen 'thin' and inline with the band as in the concept shot below.
Wouldn't it be cool if this thing can make/receive phone calls and 3G data and not have to be tethered to your iPhone to do so?

This watch would be cool if it had a downward-facing camera on the band which fed into the background of the screen. Every time you looked at it, it'd look as if part of your arm is missing and your hand is just floating there.

I'm so easily amused..

But the bigger question is why's she wearing it on her right wrist, the big weirdo...

what a monstrosity...

If that monstrosity of an electronic clock bracelet is actually what shows up Apple has become filled with worms.

Yuk!

More stylish, at a glance, than what Sony imagines for my wrist:

… Why is that certain folks in this forum feel the need to bash anything that's not directly made by Apple? …

When I dislike a product, it's usually without prejudice to the producer. So, for example, I'm recently critical of Yosemite.

I do think that Sony's device for the wrist is amusingly dislikable. Shapely.

Other things that are shapely: hovercrafts, the T.A.R.D.I.S., my cat. But none of those shapes, at any size, would look particularly good wrapped around a wrist that is also adorned with fine silver or platinum bangles.
