I tried more than a few Sony and other Walkman-like devices, none of the early models impressed me enough to make a purchase. The concept was highly desirable but the Sony devices lacked the quality that I wanted, and I didn't want to waste hard-earned money (from my first jobs) on an impulse buy.
Experiences with JVC were
consistently pleasing most notably, an
RC-M70 in 1981 so eventually I got something better (for me) than the Sony Walkman: a
JVC CQ-F2K. Good quality sound and construction, I used it for years.
After around five years, when the JVC finally became irreparable: again I spent plenty of time shopping around, none of the Sony models were compelling. I got an
Aiwa HS-PX101.
I can't recall the exact reasons for never
purchasing Sony (I had some good experiences with Sony
hand-me-downs). There was, at least, a very strong impression that the company had a disregard for compatibility; I suspected that it was more interested in my money than in providing lasting pleasure through its products.
