Microsoft, get your **** together. I don't want to buy a Surface to play my Xbox remotely. Mac support!

Good on Sony for developing this.
Sony stopped selling PCs, so they don't try to promote their own computers. And Microsoft is their main gaming competitor, so it is normal that they promote Macs.

As you said - lag depends on many factors - I also have a $200 router and lag was horrible on the PS TV

And as we both said, MANY factors.

Distance, settings, length of cables. My point being, it isn't necessarily the device

I never assessed blame to Sony or any other vendor. Remote play services tend to suffer from lag. It is what it is. Also never commented about an expectation of game play. You're erroneously attributing a helluva lot to my comment.

My bad.

But remote play for me thus far has been more than adequate to play the every day sports game, fifa, nhl, need for speed

WHEN will Apple get with the damn times from 10 years ago and start putting HDMI in/out ports on their desktop computers!? Locking an iMac's beautiful 27" display behind some garbage Thunderbolt ports that don't work with anything is positively criminal!

The reason is not Apple, it's HDCP (High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection) built-in to the HDMI connection that essentially prevents HDMI-IN ports from being on full-fledged computers with a hard drive. Hollywood knows people would severely abuse this for the purposes of piracy.

Now, nothing prevents Apple from putting an HDMI-IN port on the Thunderbolt Display in addition to DisplayPort, but they haven't updated that display in 5 years at this point. Even if they do, they are way more likely to add USB-C/Thunderbolt 3 as the input over HDMI.

Use the dial to move forward / backward, aim up / down, but you can't do both at the same time.

"Working" at work will never be the same again starting tomorrow (if this works out well).

I mean yeah that's true. I'm sure this will be good for some people, but for me?...

I was so excited when apple brought split screen and picture in picture in the last big update. I could finally watch movies while I do other crap! Then I realized I focused on the content much less and wasn't able to really enjoy anything. I'd miss scenes in the movie and have to rewind or I would be barely focused on two tasks at once.

I feel like it'll be the same with this feature. It sounds great but then I actually do it and it's very meh. Won't be able to get as engrossed in my content as I would if I was at home in front of my projector and 100 inch screen. And how much time would I have at work? I'll probabl be interrupted during some important gaming moments!

I'm glad they brought this feature, but I'm personally gonna pass on it. Remote play sucked on my vita and pstv too, so I'm not too optimistic

Total side note about the Thunderbolt Display.....It's totally embarrassing that they are even selling that thing right now.

Saw it yesterday at an Apple Store and you can see why the 5k iMac is literally on the other side of the room!!

The TB display looks like washed up garbage compared to basically any other screen in the entire Apple Store.

I'm surprised that they are releasing it so soon. Can't wait to try it out and see if the lag is tolerable.

When I saw this, I thought "time to finally get a PS4".

But why limit to 720p? And why would the "Internet" speed decide which quality to stream when it's going over the LAN?

If this would have worked on a 5k iMac at >= 1080p then this would have been worth considering. Now I'm not that convinced.

I guess for those of us playing games on pc to begin with, this isnt that big of a deal. I already have pc connected to big screen tv and my trusty Logitech Rumble Pad, so Il just keep playing NHL PC games and my Sega and Nintendo emulators(Kings of the Beach....bitch)

I just downloaded and installed the Remote Play on my Mac, but it cannot find my PS4 (auto or manual registration). Vita connects fine remotely.

I live in Essex, with only 2 bars of 4G and I get 30mbps... With 5 bars who knows?
Hmm. Just checked 4G at home and got 29/1. I'm impressed! Things have improved significantly since the last time I checked, either the network has been boosted or the iPhone 6S is much better at connecting to it.

My fibre connection is only 32/5.

It's daytime here (I work from home) so there won't be as many people using bandwidth of either kind at the moment locally. It might not be as good in the evening.

Probably because you also need the 3.5 firmware update on the PS4. You should be able to download that later today.

"The decision to bring Remote Play to PCs and Macs comes after Microsoft introduced a remote gameplay feature for the Xbox One, allowing Xbox games to be played using a PC that runs Windows 10"

This is telling...

the cynic in me thinks one of the reasons they released this is because they've stopped production of the Vita TV. still great news, though. most computers will be able to run this because the ps4 is doing the processing. I use my Vita TV in the other room all of the time. I've got an airport as my router and have no issues with the system. Play fallout 4 in the spare room all of the time. i WISH Australia had better internet as our uploads dont cut it outside of our own networks....

the one thing that xbox1 has going for it compared to the ps4 is the backwards compatibility. the ps crew have decided that they want to try with online gaming streaming but the network resources are too much for some users.

Just tried this, connects fine over home network. But then as soon as I use the controller, the app crashes. Not sure I'm getting the controller to just connect to the mac and not PS4 as well...

Anyone who spends $999 now on a 2560x1440 monitor is insane. If Apple is still going to sell it they should drop the price to $499 and that should have happened a year or two ago.

In limited testing, it took three times to connect, but it worked great on the third try. Haven't tested any real games yet, so that will be the next step when I get the chance.

EDIT: I am using the PS4 hard wired into an airport extreme (a couple gen older model) with a MacBook Pro (listed in sig) over wifi. I can try wired at some point if it needs it.

Because it's not going over LAN. Remote play means just that, you can play remotely, away from home. You just need a device that supports it and an internet connection (broadband or mobile).

720p will be fine for most users, especially on a non retina MacBook (like me :))

Works like a charm, Sony.

Will 720p look bad on a retina display? not sure how it scales but if it's like non retina optimised websites the images look pixelated.

If this works as good as it sounds i'd be tempted to buy a PS4.. I like gaming but don't get much time to take over the TVs in the home or move out of the way (kids etc..) so being able to fire up my Mac on my lap in the living area and play PS4 games is very appealing.

Finally played through a few minutes of a real game...

Fallout 4 PS4 to MBP.jpg

Graphics, of course, not as good as on the PS4, but very usable but will need to test it in a battle... This is already better than the PSTV.

EDIT: FYI, I have the Hi-Res screen MBP Late 2011... Not retina screen, but still higher res than a basic screen... 1680 x 1050 resolution on a 15" screen, the same resolution as my 20" iMac.

EDIT2: This is with PS4 Remote standard Resolution (540P) and Standard frame rate. My next test will be bumping it up.

1. Downloaded the app
2. Connected my DualShock controller
3. Entered my username and password
4. Wait... wait... nothing happens.
5. Figured out I have to update PS4 to fw 3.50 - did it.
6. Reconnect.. success.
7. Works, but looks horrible.
8. Disconnected, set resolution to 720p and 60fps
9. Reconnected - works flawlessly, minimal lag, a bit washed out, but its ok, better than expected.

So it works! I am impressed!

It doesn't look very pixelated, it scales nicely imho. But 1080p would be better.

Here's with the settings up... Will try video later, have to go to work now.

I forced a fire fight and the graphics do begin to blur when things get heavy.
