It depends on what you need

If you must have the Apple eco-system, then what form factor do you want?

If smaller then buy the mini, If size is not as important, go for the retina display

If cost is a concern and eco-system not as important - then maybe the Nexus or even Amazon's Kindle Fire HD 8.9" - $299 for 16 gigabytes of storage, Screen size: 8.9 inches, Screen resolution: 1920 by 1200 pixels (254 PPI), retina display

Its a great time to be a consumer

Holding a device that close to eyes warrants a Retina resolution.

Passing this time. Do I really need it? Nope, shiz and giggles toy for me.

Good luck to the rest who'll purchase; I look forward to the feedback.

I've preordered a Mini 32Gb, which I'm thinking will get exchanged for a 16Gb , a smart cover and a 12W charger. I'll wait a few weeks before getting a sleeve, stand, and probably some kind of clear sticker to protect the back.

I'm thinking 64gig LTE iPad 4.
I'm not getting one until Xmas, so I have time to read plenty of reviews and get some hands on time to make sure that is the choice to make.

16gb black mini from bestbuy to try it out with the premier silver 60 day return policy. If you buy it after Nov 4th then you will get holiday return policy which is even longer. I get to try it out and see if any better deals pop up like at apple black friday. bestbuy triple points reward zone from nov8- 18, bestbuy open box, apple refurb. I feel this is a great way to test it and make sure I get the best price for the next 60-80 days ;)

I was responding to a guy who said he wishes Apple "would have built a phone to the Nexus specs I'd be thrilled."

So he wants the iPhone to have lower PPI screen, no LTE, and max storage of 16GB.

I would love to see Apple do a low end Iphone also. Whether it is Nexus 4 spec is debatable. When you look at places outside of US, they tends to buy an unlock phone and pick the carrier that they want to use. And a lot of potential customer don't have the income to support a 600-800 unlock smartphone. So if Apple can do an IPhone Value brand with a price of 350-400 and 30-35% gross margin, I think they can sell 2x to 3x the current Iphone. So long as they have enough features to separate the two model lines, it will work great. There is really not a lot of growth driver for Apple right now. Iphone and Ipad are the games. Apple has 3 out of the park products in a roll, Ipod, Iphone and Ipad. Asking for a forth block buster product is a lot to ask for a company the size of Apple now. But extending the dominance of Iphone and Ipad for the next 3-5 years are certainly possible. But they need to deal with the problem of market share (in 3Q12, Apple delivered only 15% of the world wide smartphone shipment. Samsung has 100% YOY growth, ZTE has 82.9% yoy growth and Apple is third with 57.2% yoy growth).

semi-disappointed about lack of retina, which will likely be included in 2nd generation.... but so what!? looking forward to the ipad mini tomorrow ! I've been waiting for this smaller form factor so long ^__^

the 10" ipad is too big for my intended usage, and I have no interest in the Nexus 7 or Nook Fire HD (if I cared about specs > overall user experience then I wouldn't have an iphone).

I'll happily use it for 1 year (or 7 months), then inevitably sell it to buy the ipad mini 2nd gen with retina next year :)

I have LTE on my Galaxy S III, it's a feature I could take or leave. The advantage of no LTE is increased battery life.

If battery life is important to you, maybe you should get a smaller screen device like the iPhone 5? The iPhone 5 has a longer battery life than the Nexus 4.

Web browsing on WiFi battery life:

iPhone 5: 10.27
Nexus 4: 6.27

Web browsing on 3G/4G LTE battery life:

iPhone 5 (LTE): 8.19
Galaxy S3 (LTE): 4.3
Nexus 4 (3G) 4.18

16GB is perfect since I have an iPod with my music and never watch videos on a smartphone.

The Nexus 4 is an ideal configuration for my preferences.

Let me guess. You also have a camera to take photos and record videos.

So instead of having one device that has enough storage, you carry a smartphone, an iPod, and a camera in your pocket, just because 16GB is the max storage you can have on the Nexus 4.

Apple still sells the iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S.

And just as easily as you can dismiss 4.7" as a "giant screen", someone else could say the iphone 5 has a tiny narrow display. It just depends how you look at it. One thing you can say is that Apple is the only smartphone manufacturer whose flagship phone is under 4.5"

And Google's flagship phone has 16GB max storage.
Apple's flagship iPhone 5 starts with 16GB storage.

At least with the iPhone 5 screen, you get twice the battery life on browsing the web when compared to the Nexus 4.

Coming from an iPad 2 , I finally choose an iPad 4.
The lack of retina display was a factor, and I don't really need an ultraportable tablet.
Form factor of traditional iPad is perfect.

I only mentioned battery life in the context of connectivity methods, it's only a secondary consideration.

I have an iPhone 5.

I've been using both iOS and Android concurrently since they each debuted.

A few weeks ago I shelved the iPhone 5 and went back to using my superior iPhone 4S. The iPhone 5's lack of Google Maps is one of the deal breakers.

Then your priorities are way different from mine.

I want a phone that easily fits in my pocket, last the whole day, and large enough to store my music, photos, apps, podcast, and enough room to take photos and record videos.

A 4.7" is way to big for my taste as a phone. 32GB is the smallest storage I would go far considering the size of my library of apps and music.

I enjoy the new Apple Maps very much. Integrates with Siri and has navigation. Google Maps didn't have navigation on iOS, so it was pretty limited to me.
